I am mostly interested in one that is very good at scanning text. Is there any that can do a exel log? I tried getting paperport 9 but all I could get was 8.

Give VueScan a try, http://www.hamrick.com/

I've got an old Acer SCSI scanner whose TWAIN driver didn't play well with XP, VueScan did the trick...
