Flat Panel: 30" Sharp LCD or 32" Sony Plasma?
Flat Panel: 30" Sharp LCD or 32" Sony Plasma?
My parents have a smaller room they want to put a flat panel in. A regular tube would look awkward in the room and the space is needed anyway. My dad is already spoiled with his Elite 52" so he's looking for that kind of quality out of the new TV. I've narrowed down the choice to the 30" Sharp LC30HV2U and the 32" Sony KZ32TS1. I can get both for the exact same price, but dont know which would give me the clearest picture quality and clarity. The extra 2 inches on the Sony doesnt make a true difference since its gonna be on a small table on a stand anyway, the only thing is i hear different things about both. The Sharp has an external tuner, but it has PIP (split screen mode) and I've heard that an LCD display is more crisp than that of a plasma. They both are also HDTV ready. The only thing that is keeping my for leaning towards the Sony is that I thought plasma monitors only had a certain lifespan as opposed to LCDs. Not only that, plasmas dont look the greatest with normal to bright lighting in the room which should idealy be dim to dark and the TV is gonna be looked at mostly with the lights on and during the day. Now with the amount of time spent looking at the TV and with bright lighting on is it even smart to go with a plasma or would the LCD be ideal for those conditions which would provide a longer lifespan? The LCD looks so crisp even with bright lights, but the external tuner turns me off. The TV is also equiped to be used as a computer monitor and will sometimes be used as such. Also, I've heard Sharp makes great LCDs, is this an ok brand name for LCDs? I cant talk highly at all about any other Sharp product, so i'm weary about this, but dont feel like giving in to Sony where you're paying mostly for the name brand. However this particular Sony plasma is the WEGA line, so it is the nicest Sony plasma. Again, I can get either of them for the same exact price, so this makes the choice even harder. I'm stuck here someone help me out!

I'm paying a bit more than half that
I never pay retail price for ANYTHING!I'm just worried about the plasma not lasting as long as the LCD and the fact that plasmas dont look that good in normal to bright lighting which is what it'd be subjected to. Both displays are hot, i just want a good product that'll last a while.
What are your takes on an extended warranty plan?
i have versions of both product lines.
go for the Sony. there is no comparison to this line of plasma.
i dont know where your gettin the idea that the LCD looks better in bright light... but your crazy.
the LCD sucks. it sucks so bad that i lend it out to friends.
and the plasma will last longer then you need it to. so dont fret

btw, i have one of my smaller aquos in the bedroom on my nightstand... and the plasma in my bedroom on a dresser...
in the morning my room is BRIGHT AS FUCK as the sun seems right outside my window...
the plasma looks just as good in bright, direct light as no light. the lcd does not look good in direct light.

2 reasons I'd go Sony
#1 I know stereos aren't TVs but I've had my Sony CD stereo shelf system for probably 5 or 6 years(i know it was before i was driving)( it was funny cause the store i went to(now they went under
) but I was only 14 or 15 at the time and I was crank it up(cause they had display models) and these are 350-400 bucks(for a nice Shelf unit) and the guy comes in he's like okay quit playing man. I was like I'm testing them he's like you have the money for one of these. I open my wallet which took me forever to save the money to get it and it was filled with 20's) then he was REAL nice
. but anyhow i've had it awhile and (knock on wood) never failed me. and I use it daily.so the quality in Sony is really good. When we got our Big screen TV I wanted dad to get a Sony but he couldn't cause they wouldn't cut him a good enough deal on it so we went Toshiba(which is a nice TV).
#2 if you guys watch MTV cribs(it's not on as much as it used to be) but all the big name stars go with Plasma TVs cause they are not only cool but the picture PERFECT.

everytime i buy something i get the extended warrenty. You cant go wrong with a few years of protection. Besides you can usually haggle the price of the warrenty. The reason i say this is because i have had a couple of things break on me for no reason and there were times that i was protected by the warrenty and there were times that i had to buy a whole knew product, so go for it all.
If you guys have noticed the drop in Big Screen prices lately, its because new DLP rear projection sets are coming. The new Samsung 43' - 50' are only 70-80lbs respectively!! and 17" deep.
Also the FCC just passed the following:
DigiTimes article
Also the FCC just passed the following:
The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reportedly passed a new regulation in August, requiring digital tuners to be installed into 50% and 100% of 36-inch and larger TVs by July 1 of 2004 and July 1 of 2005 respectively and into all 13-inch and larger TVs by July 1 of 2007.

You must not have seen Pioneer Elite's or Mitsubishi's.
I've seen most plasmas and all I can say is

Viewing angle is not that great and in brightly lit rooms,
fuggggedaboutit.

Rear projections own plasmas in terms of image quality man.
Plasma's only selling point is that its much lighter and thiner.
But if youre saying its cooler than rear projections then yea I sorta agree. Still, I'd take image quality/brightness/black performance/no digital artifacts any day. The new and SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT DLP rear projections are gonna shorten the value gap between todays chunky 200lb. rear projection 50" monsters and 50" $10g plasmas.
i think i'll be gettin the Sony this weekend.
soopa, i beg to differ that the lcd looks like crap in bright light, in fact i think they look better than plasmas in bright light. in either case, sony it is. i havent however seen the way a plasma looks in a non high def mode, so i hope its at least half way decent.
btw, when u guys look at a 4:3 format program on your 16:9, do u stretch it out or leave it with the black bars. imo, i think it looks tacky when people stretch the image out...

Kvit, come to my house, and watch my plasma during the day, and say that again...
sorry bro, it isn't like that...you get a good plasma, and it's insane..mine doubles as a computer display in better than XGA resolution...
It even has a high contrast setting for daytime viewing in direct light...
and I can see my screen in photographs, and from pretty much any angle conceivable inside my condo...
yuppie. beg to differ as much as you want... fact is i have 4 AQUOS sets. i know. they ARE affected by light despite the marketing.
when you watch 4:3 you watch in Wide Zoom, it doesnt look stretched but you lose just a tiny bit of image info top and bottom. Youll only notice if watching a news channel with a ticker.
Anyway...
a good RP television can definately keep up with a good plasma.
But I dont agree with Kvit at all.
All of my plasmas look GREAT in bright light. Absolutely never even thought of bright light being a problem with them. Viewing angle is also NOT AN ISSUE.
All of my plasmas are brighter, have no problem drawing true black, and exhibit no artifacts on an analog signal. (On digital cable, yes you see artifacts from the cable)
Now, like I said, I do agree that a RPTV can keep up with a Plasma on many fronts. But they dont surpass it in anyway...
I dont have a new DLP RPTV but I do have a DLP front projection...
Yes, the image quality of my front projection is greater then that of my RPTVs, Plasmas, and LCDs... does this hold true for the new RP DLP sets? I dont know. I dont think you do either apart from what your reading tho.
Anybody can make assumptions based on specs. But nothing holds true more then experience. When you get to view all these products side-by-side in your home everyday... you get a clue.
Kvit, everything you mentioned as a "bad-side" of plasma... is actually worse in Rear Projection world. Particularly, brightness, and viewing angle. You are still speaking in terms of the first plasmas on the block... shit has changed alot in just the past year.

Yes, Robb's condo is also a true testament to the awesome performance of modern day plasmas in a bright light situation.
Robb's condo is ALL GLASS on every side. During the day with the blinds open its like sitting inside of the sun...
His plasma performs so well in bright light that I never even noticed I was watching it in bright light.
The LCD display on the other hand.......
