They want like $500 to fix it at some apple service shop which is bullshit, I never thought about this before, but how about getting like an insurance policy from www.safeware.com for $122 annually and then writing a claim for accidental damage, or how about homeowners insurance, is there anywhere to check if that will cover it?

You inadvertently hit something, which pulled something else, followed by the laptop falling. If it broke that would be one thing, but in college no body has money, and that little dent is not big deal. At the very most give him some cash but why the fuck would you put the power cord around a fan.

Then sit down and talk to him.

"dude, i feel bad as shit for fucking up your computer, but I dont have much money to get it fixed properly. How can we go about settling this?"

Talk to him and negotiate to hopefully a win-win situation. If he's not too upset about the case, offer him $100 cash for the damage and buy a $6 tube of clear silicone to fill in the gap. If $100 doesn't satisfy him, how much would. If he says $600, you're better off paying the $500 for the repair. This is going to cost you between $0 and $500. You just need to find out where between those two numbers is acceptable for the both of you.

if he is cool with it not being perfect, i would tap it with a hammer, its aluminum and will bend back without much force. bottom line is its not gonna be the same without replacing the bottom cover and even then he is gonna lose all his serial number labels and stuff that are stuck on his old cover so that wouldnt be the same either

Well, if I was to use a hammer, I have a feeling the shock to the components inside will break the computer, and then I am in a worse position. I'll sit down and speak with him. Thanks guys

In all seriousness though, split the costs, cause it wasn't your fault that the cord was there.
