There's a million reasons. If you're running any Win9x variant, its because the OS just plain sucks. If you're running an NT variant, flakey RAM or video drivers are often the culprit.

there are lots of reasons your computer might freeze, and sometimes it's hard to figure out why. Often, just rebooting the computer solves the problem.
Hope that helps...

In a simple way of saying it... TO MUCH INFO/PROGRAMS RUNNING = COMPUTER FREEZE!!!

Windows for Workgroups -> Windows NT 3.5 -> Windows NT 4.0 -> Windows 2000 -> Windows XP

After WfWg, these versions of Windows did not live on top of DOS, and did away with the DOS memory limitations.
