Question COmputer File ext.?

Hey guys Im only posting this in this forum because not to many people frequent the Video games sub forum. OK here is my prob. My friend came over to my house to use my comp for some school work. (He is taking a summer chem class, not that the class really maters) Well here lies the problem. He was on the professors web-page and, he needed to watch a video that the prof. had posted. So he DLs the video and its got some strange .cns file ext. Well my comp ( Win 7) can find any program to open the file. SO I search the web and, come up with very little info on what the file is, or how to open it. Is there any of you super smart comp guys that know how to get around this, so he can open the file? He gave up for tonight and went home. But I'm sure there will be more of the videos to come.. if and when the prof does how would we go about watching the said file?

Thanks in advance guys.

Looks like it's a Microsoft filetype of some sort, other than that, don't know how to help...

http://filext.com/file-extension/CNS

http://www.file-extensions.org/cns-file-extension

I've done some work with video editing and have never heard of that file type as a video/media file.

Thanks for the attempt sly. Yeah that pretty much the same info I got. I mean if it's a windows file you would think that the almighty microsoft team would have that as a recognized file type in their new windows product. Either that or the professor is using some old/ almost never used/ ..? type of video program. Would it screw up the file if I try to change it to a mpg file type or something?

If VLC won't play it, it's just plain wrong.

Naw it won't hurt it if you just change the file extension. Try the common video formats, mpg, avi, wmv, etc.

How big is the file?

Open the file using a text editor like notepad or wordpad. I'm willing to be there is some text in that file.

well ain't shit gonna play cause there ain't shit to play. No video is 1.16kb in size. That's 1160 bytes, that's fuckin insanely puny. Shortcuts and links are usually 4kb in size.

Either the professor uploaded the video wrong or you downloaded it wrong but either way that cns file is completely useless, thow it away.

I didn't even notice the file size as my friend DLed it while I was watching T.V. I was thinking the same thing when I saw the file size, but I'm working on very little sleep and, I'm not fire on all cylinders atm. The only reason I'm still awake is that I'm trying to do my friend a favor. So here I sit. He has class tomorrow and I just called him and told him to ask the prof. about the video file. I guess the teacher just made a mistake with it. I just find it very hard to believe that no one has emailed him about it etc. I told him to check the class discussion board to see if anyone posted something about it. Nada, no go, all aboard the fail ship. Hope he gets it figured out tomorrow.
Thanks for all the help anyway sly, stogie ,and stunna. Mods feel free to lock this up any throw it away.

LOL I'm going to try sly I promise. I just got my 87th wind a little while ago. I really do appreciate all the help brother for real. That's why I love this place. With all us wackos on here haven a good time, when someone has an issue or a true problem most members will go out of their way to lend a helping hand, support, or sound advice (even if the OP wants to hear it or not .. lol)

trying downloading the video with internet explorer if you were using a different browser. I've only had this problem when on MS websites but sometimes I have to use IE or IEtab in chrome in order to download a file. Otherwise I get some small file much like you got.
