CES: 2011 News and Discussion Thread
It's about to kickoff tomorrow with the Steve Ballmer keynote but already companies are announcing their wares early in an attempt to not get lost in the chaos. But when they all do it early then it just makes CES seem longer than it really is.

So far there's been a slew of me too Android tablets all running 2.2 at best. The biggest tablet news should be when Motorola announces their Android tablet that runs 3.0 which was designed for tablets.
Also Intel announced their Core 2011 2nd Gen processors (aka Sandy Bridge). These chips are 32nm chips and have the CPU/GPU on the same die. This is different than the previous Core iX processors that had the CPU/GPU on the same package but not the same die, it makes a difference in performance and reduced power draw. Also these chips have a technology that's called Quick Sync which is insanely good at encoding video. Like much better than the best thing Nvidia can do with their CUDA GPU accelerated stuff. It's insanity....
Not to be out done AMD has finally released their Fusion APU chip which is a combination of CPU and GPU in one processor! Intel has two processors (CPU and GPU) on one die while AMD has taken the CPU and GPU and fused them into one brand new processor doing both. This is targeted at the Intel Atom processor and the AMD Fusion is supposed to kick the Atoms ass at performance (it can do DX 11!) and it's lower power.

Oh and with Sandy Bridge it seems we'll finally be switching to UEFI instead of BIOS. Intel and Windows have supported EFI for a few years but motherboard makers have really jumped on board until now. All of ASUS Sandy Bridge mobo's will be UEFI instead of BIOS!

Now it's not a real iPad 2 in there but I think the mockup is so well done that it's got to be what the iPad 2 looks like!

I just think it's too well designed to not be based on the actual dimensions of the next iPad. Now it really looks like a big iPod Touch
These also match the earlier iPad case that we saw which Apple had removed

We've been seeing supposed iPad 2 cases for about a month now, all of them with the same telltale cutouts: a camera hole in the back, a camera hole in the front, and a big ol' speaker hole. Today's find beats them all, however: we just found a case with a machined aluminum iPad 2 mockup inside. Dexim is the eager exhibitor, with an actually very intriguing case design involving a Bluetooth keyboard that magnetically adheres to the front cover of the book-like sleeve, allowing for a laptop-style setup, or a keyboard-free case when you want to shave a few ounces. It was so intriguing that we asked to put our own iPad inside, which is when we were told it wouldn't fit, since the case was designed for the next iPad. Indeed, the mockup that we found inside the case was a tad bit slimmer than the first-gen iPad, with a taper leading to the edges that reminds us of the iPod touch, and a home button positioned nearer the bottom edge. We found all the typical cutouts on the case, and their mirror on the machined mockup, including a large square for the speaker.
So, what does it all mean? Well, there's certainly a consistent iPad 2 make that these Chinese manufacturers seem to be designing against, and while there's always the off chance that their info is wrong, it seems odd they'd go so far as to actually make the cases if they were unsure about their sources. It also means a slimmer iPad with cameras and a bigger speaker, which is never a bad thing.

This will not go down as a landmark year for CES. Tablets will dominate the floor I'm glad I skipped going. I'll be at NAB this year, for me at least that's the show of all shows. :nerd:
I think if I was on Apple's blessed list of case suppliers I wouldn't show up at CES with a mock up of an iPad2. I also wouldn't have those cases on display either. Steve is going to rain down pain on those guys and they won't be making cases for iPad3.
Kinda bummed with it...been playing with my friends google tv he got as a gift....its VERY slow and laggy. Not overly intuitive, a tad cluttered.
I hope they make it better...but then again I hope the apple TV takes off and gains more functionality...

On the plus side we've been doing some work with REDs lately, fun.
My friends brother works for the law team at google, so i think he got his whole family google tv for holiday gifts.
Hope you guys found a good work flow...I am still not a RED fan. I am trying to get some day play on the new spiderman which is using the new EPIC cameras for 3D...and its all still beta hardware.

I just put together a decent DIT station I'm using at an event in a few weeks. We did RED work out in Seattle and I had the ONLY masters with me on the plane ride home. Scary.
Some of the red applications are buggy to me and we used REDDEAD alot to recover a file or two.

After reading so many mixed reviews I've decided to wait for this technology to mature a bit more. Still many functionality issues and issues with internet TV providers (ex. hulu) allowing you to stream to your TV. Also netflix will only let you watch what is in your cue and not whatever you want on the TV. Seems like the cable companies are gonna have a fit and lots of "side-business" still needs to be worked out for this to go mainstream.
Vizio is suppose to have a 2560x1080 on display, 21;9.

Plus since it's Vizio it'll prob be a bargain deal.

Like I said in the first post companies aren't waiting until CES officially starts to release their big announcements. Steve Ballmer's opening keynote is tonight.
There's a lot of rumors surrounding this keynote too. Windows 7 on ARM processors? Will they show off Windows 8? Announce new features for WP7? Windows 7 tablets or WP7 tablets which will it be!?!? New Xbox Kinect games? Standalone Windows Media Center box?
That's the one I'm waiting for......

Yup, rumors were true. MS just confirmed Windows is adding ARM support in the next version and it'll work with SoCs (system on a chip) also. I'm curious to see what they'll do with this capability.....

So now Nvidia is making CPUs! Nvidia announced they're making an ARM processor CPU for the desktop. Launch I assume would coincide with windows 8 launch since it will be first desktop OS to provide ARM support.

I believe this XOOM is coming to Verizon while Tmobile just announced 4G Honeycomb tablet made by LG. There's no pics or specs of the device so there's not much else to say.
Here's the link to the live stream of the CES Keynote if anyone wants to watch it. It should start any minute....

Yes I'll be on the show floor i think Sunday. And at the AEE on Saturday
Probably won't be able to post on AZ since last year AT&T's 3G network was just way overloaded that it just didn't work. (edge barely worked thou)
