I'm curious about this too. At this point it's cheaper to buy a iphone for soley it's ipod capabilities. Unless the ipod only functions with the phone activated.

everything I have read said you can't leave the store (at&t or apple) without activating your phone, so no more iphones as just ipods.

i think you can think of the iphone 3g as an expensive ipod that at&t is discounting when you activate it (which you have to).

A friend of mine said that when you activate the current Iphone, AT&T forces you to get a plan and that the only way to go around is jailbreaking the phone? I was hoping they'd legitimately allow you to have the phone with out adding the data plan. Can someone please clarify. Thanks

This is true.

And with the 3g...all purchases and activations are in store only to further try and inhibit jailbreaking.

Jailbreaking and selling my first gen my be worth more then I thought...
