Eric Schmidt: Ha ha, NO Google maps app for iPhone 5
'Apple should have kept ours. But what do I know?'

Google has not made a maps app for the iPhone 5, its chairman Eric Schmidt said this morning - and his company is not working on one.
The search engine supremo's snub will come as a blow to fanbois who "upgraded" to the latest Apple smartphone, or installed the new iOS 6 operating system on their fruity gadgets, and found Google's maps app replaced by Apple's less-than-brilliant satnav-like alternative. Many punters have urged Google to produce a new replacement map app.
"We have not done anything yet," Schmidt said, answering questions from journalists in Japan, according to Reuters.
Schmidt revealed that execs at top tech companies chat among themselves a lot, but that obviously doesn't stop the power play that has seen Google's map service booted out of the iPhone. Apple and Google are locked in a battle for supremacy in the mobile tech arena: the search giant's Android operating system is at the heart of smartphones and tablets competing against Apple's iPhones and iPads.
"We’ve been talking with [Apple] for a long time. We talk to them every day," he insisted. He was mellow on Apple's decision:
We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know? What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It’s their call.
Schmidt's aside to a press pack is the only indication from Google so far about its plans for Google Maps on iOS 6, which also powers the new iPhone 5. There was speculation that Google was on the verge of putting out a replacement app available through iTunes.
Schmidt took the opportunity to make a few more points about the iPhone: "Apple is the exception, and the Android system is the common model, which is why our market share is so much higher."
Schmidt said that the success of Linux-powered Android smartphones has been overlooked by the media, which he said was "obsessed with Apple's marketing events and Apple's branding".
"That's great for Apple, but the numbers are on our side," he said. ®

So, I have been on the rope about either going SGIII or Iphone5... I need to buy a new phone within the next couple of weeks.
This may ultimately make my decision as I Google Maps if probably the thing I use Most on my phone. Ugh...

Eric Schmidt. Looked to Jobs as a mentor of sorts and then turned around and tried to crush him as competition. And people wonder why jobs had it out for android.

Steve Jobs, love him or hate him, may he rest in peace, did seek perfection and tried his best to always provide the best product and service he can.
I'm sorry to say that iPhone 5 is far from Apple's standards. I can clearly see on my iPhone the inner overlay of the screen when in the sunlight. The edge of the phone, is very sharp, the back plate easily scratches, I baby the phone and still I have tiny scuff marks, it also feels uncomfortably cold, so a case is a must, especially in the winter.
The sensitivity is bothering me, a lot, as I must press harder and be precise to work the phone. I can careless for the Maps... The GPS is not as accurate at all and keeps jumping when I'm standing still. I'm sure the Maps issues are being addressed and worked on.
I love everything else, the speed, the display, the convenience.

I have no idea what you are talking about with sharp edges, being cold, or being hard to use. The screen seems way more precise and responsive then my 4 was...
I agree. Same thing here.

a slightly different take from bloombergs report:
Google Inc. (GOOG) Chairman Eric Schmidt said the company will need Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s approval to offer its maps application for the iPhone, after the software was replaced by an Apple program that’s been criticized by reviewers.
“We haven’t done anything yet with Google Maps,” Schmidt told reporters in Tokyo today. Apple would “have to approve it. It’s their choice,” Schmidt said, declining to say if the Mountain View, California-based company submitted an application to Apple for sale through its App Store.

the previous article kinda shows Eric Schmidt talking in a negative light about apple, and that was how the original article that Reuters reported. But Reuters updated the article, and the key difference I see is that they may make a google apps, but there is no saying that apple will approve it.
Update: Reuters has softened the tone of its original report which is now disputed by Bloomberg. Bloomberg says that Schmidt declined to say whether Google submitted its Maps app for Apple approval. Instead it quotes him saying, "We haven’t done anything yet with Google Maps," adding that Apple would "have to approve it. It’s their choice." The updated Reuters piece now quotes the Google chairman saying that Google and Apple are in constant communication at "all kinds of levels," while appearing to say that the decision to remove Google Maps from iOS was Apple's alone. "We think it would have been better if they had kept ours. But what do I know?" Schmidt said in Tokyo. "What were we going to do, force them not to change their mind? It's their call."

You can actually kind of see what I'm referring to in the pic below. See that faint "glow" edge around the cutout for the ear speaker? Well mine is off center from that "glow". Actually, it's in the top left. So its off center both H and V...
I imagine this is a problem only for the whites...

Well upon further review I'm being an idiot. It's the depth of the glass that's casting a shadow. I turned it upside down and it's the same thing. Lol
Still though, I kinda don't like it. Because visually it looks off when there is a light above. It was probably that way on the white 4/4S and I just never noticed...because I always had black!

Well, the only way for me to see what you were talking about... I had to use a 10x lighted magnifying glass. My near vision sucks.
And yes, I had black with the other phone as well.

Final Thoughts On The iPhone 5 Battery
As much as we’d love to be able to say that the iPhone 5 is an “all day” phone, it’s still not: just like most of its predecessors, Apple prioritized new thinness and speed over battery life. Consequently, it’s advisable to keep a charging cable nearby, lest you find yourself out of juice at or before 5pm. This isn’t terribly different from the iPhone 4S, and your mileage will vary depending on local cell tower strength, but it was certainly disappointing for us—battery life is certainly one of the two biggest issues with the iPhone 5.
Because of the iPhone 5’s tendency to run low on juice just when the night’s getting started, heavy users and frequent travelers will once again find themselves in need of spare battery packs and chargers. While third-party developers came up with all sorts of solutions for prior iPhones, such as Mophie’s Juice Packs and Incipio’s even better OffGrid Pro, the iPhone 5’s Lightning port will demand considerable re-engineering, likely delaying similar accessories until at least early 2013. The lack of charging docks will also be a pain point for users, forcing people to rely upon Apple cables or adapters until solutions are available.
Our best advice at the moment is to consider carrying a high-capacity Just Mobile Gum Plus with a Lightning to USB Cable as a backup solution. This battery offers users the ability to refuel any iPhone multiple times on a single charge, looks great, and is quite resilient. It will do as a solution until comparably-priced battery cases become available.

I plug in at work. So on Friday at 5PM I have 100%. When I get to work on Monday at 8:30 I'm usually still around 50%...
So I've never complained. I RARELY if ever charge at home.

The iPhone5 recharges so damn fast, it should help, those who are upset with it. I know the difference between the 4 and the 4s, was one of the reasons I didn't switch. But I don't care with the switch to the 5.

Mine charges fast as hell too, pretty amazing. I'm actually surprised with battery life too. I fully charged it overnight to 100% (8am I unplugged it). Here I am at 3:37, I've been regularly texting, played draw something a few times, listening to music and LTE is connected. I'm at 79%.
Before today I had never charged it to 100% and it was draining at like 1% every 30-35 mins.

I don't know about yall, but my battery life on my 4S is WAY WAY better with iOS 6 than it was with 5.... Usually I'd be at 40-50% by noon, i'm at 47% now at 3:35pm.

I started with a MBP in October of 2007 that I bought for personal use. Now, in addition to the MBP, My wife and I are on our 2nd set of iPhones, a 27" iMac, bought and sold my iPad2 and now own an iPad3, an iPod Classic, two iPod shuffles, two work issued Macbook Pros, a work issued Thunderbold display, a work issued iPad (first gen), and a partridge in a pear tree. And over the last 3 years, more so in the last 6 months, getting heavily into mobile development for the iOS platform.
What's funny is that when I tell people about this they immediately think I'm an Apple fanboy when I'm quite the opposite. I've always been highly critical of how technology is created/used and best applied and unlike M$, Apple has actually pissed me off even more because they tend to put form over function.
My philosophy with technology has always been use the best of everything as every technology has its own strength and weaknesses. Being a programmer, I get to make use of Windows, Linux and OS X all in one machine, a developer's dream.
