Interesting that the 16" MBP with a M1 Max chip will have a "high power" mode.

I decided to cancel my order for the M1 Max 24 core w 64gb.

And I ordered the M1 Max 32 core with 64gb...which is what I should have done in the first place. Now I have to wait til Dec...but thats OK.

I've never heard her give a critical review, and does lots of spon con. Compare her review of the Surface Duo 2 with MKBHD's.

The local best buy had the new MBPs on display so I got to hold a 14in today. I didn't play with the display since I have a mini LED TV at home I know it looks awesome but the thing that stood out the most to me was the side vents on the bottom. Never felt that on a Mac before definitely a function over form decision, and I cried when I saw the HDMI port

I also don’t like how the menu bar is now thicccer than before.

it’s like they created a solution for a problem that didn’t need to exist.

The default Monterey background is hideous. I can't remember the last time I had to figure out how to change my background.

Apple announces Self Service Repair

Apple parts, tools, and manuals — starting with iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 — available to individual consumers
CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIAApple today announced Self Service Repair, which will allow customers who are comfortable with completing their own repairs access to Apple genuine parts and tools. Available first for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 lineups, and soon to be followed by Mac computers featuring M1 chips, Self Service Repair will be available early next year in the US and expand to additional countries throughout 2022. Customers join more than 5,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers (AASPs) and 2,800 Independent Repair Providers who have access to these parts, tools, and manuals.
The initial phase of the program will focus on the most commonly serviced modules, such as the iPhone display, battery, and camera. The ability for additional repairs will be available later next year.
“Creating greater access to Apple genuine parts gives our customers even more choice if a repair is needed,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “In the past three years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service locations with access to Apple genuine parts, tools, and training, and now we’re providing an option for those who wish to complete their own repairs.”
Apple builds durable products designed to endure the rigors of everyday use. When an Apple product requires repair, it can be serviced by trained technicians using Apple genuine parts at thousands of locations, including Apple (in-store or by mail), AASPs, Independent Repair Providers, and now product owners who are capable of performing repairs themselves.

Self Service Repair

To ensure a customer can safely perform a repair, it’s important they first review the Repair Manual. Then a customer will place an order for the Apple genuine parts and tools using the Apple Self Service Repair Online Store. Following the repair, customers who return their used part for recycling will receive credit toward their purchase.
The new store will offer more than 200 individual parts and tools, enabling customers to complete the most common repairs on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.
Self Service Repair is intended for individual technicians with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. For the vast majority of customers, visiting a professional repair provider with certified technicians who use genuine Apple parts is the safest and most reliable way to get a repair.
Is this real life? What's the catch?

We don't know what the cost for the parts and tools will be. Being Apple, they'll end up costing almost as much as going directly to Apple for service.

Replacement battery for iPhone 12 and 13 through Apple is $69. Want to do it yourself? Apple will sell you the official Apple battery for $40. Need the tools? That'll be $20.

That's what Louis mentioned. Bad Macbook screen? We won't sell you the screen by itself that costs $75 we'll only sell you the entire top clamshell which costs $800. Need a new keyboard, usually that's $30-40 but we'll only sell you the top panel which includes a new keyboard, trackpad, and battery for $320. Might as well just buy a new one at that point, amirite? *wink wink* *nudge nudge*

IDK we'll see maybe they're coming around. They removed a recently implemented restriction that disabled FaceID if your screen was replaced, even with another OEM screen.
The newest MBPs have pull tabs under the batteries that make them easier to replace, and iFixit has said that their recent devices are slightly easier to repair, so maybe they're turning the ship around

it finally showed up today. My 2013 MBP was on its last leg, once the battery switched to saying service needed, it slowed down a lot, battery life was bad, it was still barely usable. So the speed that everything runs, the crazy battery life, it's quiet and cool, screen is great, I already don't see the notch. I started over from scratch, no migration assistant, since my old laptop had 10 years of bloat, and was Intel based, I didn't want any of its quirks to migrate over.

Is there a dock like this that has Ethernet and doesn't block the MagSafe port?

I'd like the see an adapter like this that targets the new MBPs, one that drops the HDMI port for something better

This thing is pretty good.

I’m selling my 2018 Mac Mini since I never used it, I looking to replace it with a Caldigit TS4 dock, but honestly I probably won’t use that either, I like the idea of it connected to my multi monitors and being able to do serious shit on a Mac if I need to.

Anyone have issues charging their iPad Pro when it’s connected to their M1 mbp? Mine charges for like the first 15 secs when connected with the type c cable then stops charging but the data connection continues to work. I’ve tried different ports, and cables, with the dock, without the dock, mbp charging, mbp not charging
