70-inch Sony LCD Projection TV
I saw this TV in Circuit city last night and it appeared to be the "PERFECT" television. Sharp picture, vivid colors, good blacks. Ive read some reviews and one had mentioned something about the HDTV contoversy and that the TV will drop in value substantially over the next couple of years. Now, I don't plan to buy this as an "investment", but at $5500 new now, I don't want to pay if the price will drop. Any suggestions?
A couple of my clients are really into audio/video, and they both swear by Samsung's DLP projection TVs... I don't know if they go up to 70" though. I did a little research myself... and if I was going to buy a big TV today? I'd go with the Samsung, but the Sony would be the runner up.

I think it's also awesome that it's like... only 17" deep!!! From just about every angle... it actually looks like a plasma!!! Viewing from just about very angle... is good too. Unlike the older style projection TVs... where you had to be right in front to get a decent picture.

Both the Sony RP LCD and the Samsung DLPs are really nice sets. You need to take a look at them both to really see which one you like better. Some people have trouble watching the DLPs for certain reasons, but they are much easier to connect a computer to. For lots of AV info, check out AVS Forums. Specifically, check out this topic.
I didn't know the 70" Sony XBR was out yet, but I have the 50" non-XBR and it is very nice.
One thing to keep in mind is how far from the set you plan on sitting. Standard definition TV would look like cr@p on the 70" if you were sitting only 10 feet way.

I never heard of a 70" LCD Sony. I have a 65" Sony HDTV with that fancy glass screen you can see from any angle, and put your mem stick into to view pictures. It was only about 4K.
5500 for a Plasma sounds way too cheap. I just seen a 51" Sony Plasma for like 8K. I'd check on the details.

Nice set. But, if you want a giant picture, why not consider front projection? It'll be less money, and you can go even bigger.
If movies are something you enjoy, the money won't be that important. If you are dropping $5k+ to impress your friends, you will regret it.
I dropped nearly $5k on a Pioneer Elite HD ready RPTV 3.5 years ago, and I haven't regretted it. DVD and HD still put a smile on my face.

LOL Hyundai and Kia are same company? WOW
I didnt even know that, learn something new everyday.
The Sony Grand Wega is a Rear Projection LCD and its very nice, just make sure that you will be sitting far enough away from it so that you done see the "screen door effect". I have a 43 inch Samsung DLP and its a great tv. My main gripe with it is that it doesnt produce very nice blacks so some detail gets lost in dark scenes. Faces also look 'clayish' sometimes. Black detail is a problem with all LCD and DLP tvs though. CRTs always produce the best color and black levels.

Thanks for all the help guys. Does anyone know how sharp a DVD will appear on a 70" LCD screen? Viewing distance would probably be between 15 and 20 feet. I've also looked at the plasmas, but for the price I think this 70" LCD would be tought to beat. Anyone have a better suggestion?
JPTLSO3: When did you buy your 65" plasma and where did you get it for 4k? How does that model handle DVD and HD? Heck, for $1500 less I can do without the extra 5" (on my TV).

Chances are that any plasma for 4k will only be Enhanced Definition and not High Definition.
At 15-20 feet the 70" should look great. If you get closer than about 12 feet, you will start noticing a decrease in picture quality. General rule of thumb is:
As for DVDs, they should look pretty good, though not as good as HD. If you really want top notch picture, get a DVD player with a Farudja (sp) scaler built in. The Sony does a decent job on it's own, but not as good as the Farudja (from what I've heard). Then there is the whole issue of component vs DVI, but that's a whole other discussion.

Code:
minimum seating distance = 2 x screen size

that TV is awesome, my dad saw it at Circuit City as well, but it was goin for $7k over here. and yes it is an LCD TV. The main problem that we had when we were considerin gettin a front projection system is that does the room have to be absolutely dark inorder to enjoy a front projection system? cuz i mean that could be governing point when it comes to purchasing either LCD, DLP or front projection.
thankz guys!

If you just want a big, fantastic picture, the best deal going has to be the 64" Pioneer 64-HD5 at Costco for $2000. It has the same internal line doubler as my Elite. The picture quality is fantastic- nobody does color as well as Pioneer. Regular cable/ DirecTV is VERY easy to watch on these big sets, which is not something that can be said for very many large TVs. You'll miss out on DVI connections with this set, but that's not a huge deal yet.
For reference, my "sweet spot" seat is 9.5' from my screen, and I have no issues with picture quality for DVD or HD. NONE. Just a fantastic image. In fact, if you're sitting 20' from a 70" HD image, you're cheating yourself out of all the picture has to offer. If you have to sit back 2x screen size to enjoy the picture, there's something wrong with it.
Regarding front projection- yes, the room does need to be darkened some, just to keep incident light off of the screen, to prevent the picture from being washed out. Today's digital projectors are pretty bright, though. For instance, Sony's HS-20 uses the same exact internal engine as that of the Sony's LCD rear projector TVs, like the one mentioned above.

I'm not going to repeat myself again.
Do a seach on my username and LCoS.
In less than a years time a 65" LCoS tv will be $1500. Which is LCD projection technology. Only IMPROVED!
LCoS projection fixes a lot of the flaws current DLP and LCD projections systems have. Basically its better color, tighter pixel spacing and better contrast. Oh ya, and cheaper! (thanks to intel for that)
I'd wait............. (go read my post as to why it will be cheap very soon)
