That's what 3 shutouts in a week will get you.

Fleury took us to 2 cup finals, I'm very happy to see him staying in Pittsburgh.

FWIW, I don't consider Fleury to be the top-echelon of goalies. And that's not hating. To me, he's like Crawford...serviceable goalies who can look really good because they have a great team in front of them. And frankly, so long as he makes his saves here and there and Pens play smart in front of him, Pittsburgh has a great of chance as anyone to win it all. That's the NHL of today.

Look at poor Scrivens and Fasth in Edmonton. Their stats are putrid. But, heyyyy...prior to joining Deadmonton, they had some nice numbers. But, look at their former teams...good defensively! WOW, what a concept.

Hang on...*in Moog voice* PUT DOWN DA BONG!...

And dare I say it...while Quick has some great acrobatic saves, I think you put him in Deadmonton or Carolina, let's see how amazing he is?

Well. There. I dared to say something sorta kinda negative about the bestest greatest player in all of NHL...Quick.

If that does not bring Moog back to his besty's defense and to attack me...nothing will. Not even me giggling that Halfla Moyfov is a girl-beater.

I don't think Fleury is very good but what else is Pitt supposed to do? It's not as if there's any better available.

When was he current deal up? I assume end of this year?

The statistics are backing up what the hockey world has started to believe.
Connor McDavid is better than Sidney Crosby was at age 17.
That's not to say the Erie Otters star will automatically go on and score massive goals in two Olympic finals or win a Stanley Cup for whatever downtrodden NHL team picks him first overall next June, the way No. 87 has in Pittsburgh.
But this kid, who is ripping apart the OHL offensively right now, is superior to the player Crosby was for the Rimouski Oceanic a decade ago.
“They're both the top player in their league at the same age,” said one veteran NHL scout, who prefers to remain anonymous, “but with what McDavid has done the first couple of months of this season, it's just mind-boggling.
“It's hard to watch the other players in the game. It's hard to scout (Otters teammate) Dylan Strome or anyone else you're there to watch because he's so good.”
The difference, according to the trained eyes, is in McDavid's speed.
Crosby has always been an intelligent player but when he was 15 at Shattuck St. Mary's, he wasn't a great skater. By 17, he started to become a good skater and he worked so hard at it, he's great now.
McDavid is already an outstanding skater.
“That would be his advantage over Sidney,” the scout said. “Connor is so much faster than everyone else. The thing I noticed the first time I saw him play is if there's a turnover in his own zone and he comes up with the puck, the other team starts to panic. You can see they're worried and the D backing up. They know they have an issue. I can't say I've seen a guy come up with the puck in his own zone and the other team thinks, 'Uh, oh.' He's 175 feet from the net and they think he can score.”
McDavid is most deadly off the rush. Crosby has been famous for honing his ability to work the puck down low effectively against bigger defenders and centres.
“The funny thing about Crosby – and he doesn't get credit for it – is he's the best grinder in the NHL,” the scout said. “He has this finesse image along the lines of Gretzky, but he's not. Coming up with pucks, rolling off guys and cycling, he does all those little power forward things.”
That started in Rimouski, where Crosby would beg then-assistant coach Guy Boucher to keep coming at him in battle drills so he could learn to absorb the punishment he would face in the pros.
McDavid isn't that powerful yet, but he's cracked 6 foot and he's got some weight under him now.
“That was a worry,” the scout said. “When he came in the league, he was a boy but he's a young man now. I can't think of many situations (where a draft-eligible player) has been this dominant. Crosby was kind of like it. (Alex) Ovechkin was like that, too, scoring two goals a game, but that was international hockey. A guy like (St. Louis defenceman) Jay Bouwmeester was such a great skater, your eye went to him. But McDavid is just incredible. He's so fast and so smart and so unselfish.”
The only thing anyone points to is his defensive game.
“But that'll come,” the scout said, “and he's got the puck the whole time and that's pretty good defence, too.”
There's no question McDavid is going to be compared and contrasted with American counterpart Jack Eichel, the young Boston University star, right up to the draft. The next big game is Canada-USA at the world juniors on New Year's Eve in Montreal.
“It'll be the most hyped since the Olympic gold medal game,” the scout said. “I'm surprised I haven't seen an ad for it yet on TSN.”
But really, a GM who would pick Eichel over McDavid at this moment must be sure of unlimited job security.
It's not going to happen – and that's why we have to get our fun comparing the kid with the game's greats.
“Patrick Kane is one of the best juniors I've ever seen,” the scout said. “He and McDavid are both hard to hit, but this guy is faster than Kane. Most kids who are going 100 miles an hour don't necessarily have to think. They just skate around everybody. This guy thinks at that high speed, which is his remarkable quality.
“Sidney Crosby was an intelligent player before he was a fast player.”
And if you're a fan, it's time to act quickly, too.
Go to the nearest rink and see McDavid play for 20 bucks before you have to shell out $500 or more next year.
42 points in 14 games.

From what I see on capgeek, this was his last year under the current deal. I'm also seeing (not sure if it's correct) that his new contract pays him the same 5.75 mil per year he's received since the 2013/14 season. Not sure what type of no movement clause he has now, he had a limited movement clause in his current deal.

From a cap perspective I'd say it was a smart deal. I think the 7+ million a year deals teams hav been making under the assumption "the caps going up" are going to turn out to be a mistake with a weak Canadian dollar and requirements of US dollar salaries.

yes, end of the year, I believe his deal was 4 mil a year. He's a good goalie, like domcha says there's not many other options, and our goalie prospect is way far away from being ready, so he's our guy

His old deal was 35 mil for 7 years, 3.5 mil the first 2 years, 5.5 mil for years 3,4, and 5 and 5.75 mil for years 6 and 7 (this year). That was also under the old CBA, his cap hit was 5 million a year through the whole contract. They wasted 1.5 mil in cap space in years 1 and 2 to be able to have a higher than cap payroll in years 3-7.

I think the new deal is 4 years 23 million but under the new CBA there's no gaming the system so it's 4 years 5.75 million a year on the cap and actual salary. Still that's signing him without giving him a pay raise over the last 2 years, the 2 highest paid years, of his old contract.

Here's his contract stats...

And they have to play tonight without Ference. I'm curious how many games are in that streak, they didn't play in Boston very often under the old conference alignment. Some years they didn't even play each other or they played in Edmonton.

Detroit hasn't beaten Boston for the division championship since 1937.

Sweet clip. Kinda remains me of early home videos of young domcha. Back when he was a B's fan (before he was a leaves, quacks, habelino) and before he failed at pro hockey.

I think this kid may be getting screwed. The only person on the laffs who should be using clenbuterol is Fats Kessel. Its basically a PED used to cut weight, not build stamina or muscle.

This is typically a PED for boxers/wrestlers/MMA fighters who need to cut weight before a fight.

You know dom, Shanny et al should truly just tank the season like the Oilers and Sabres. You know as far as conspiracies goes, if the Leaves finish in the bottom 3, Bettman's lottery balls will "magically" bounce to Toronto to nab the #1 pick and voila...McDavid.
