THE 2007 College Football Thread

Well everyone it is exactly a month until college football kicks off on September 1st. Technically it is August 30th, but the only decent game is LSU @ Miss. St.

The rankings are not out yet, but once they come out I plan on posting them up. Who has some early predictions about the outcome of this season? I'll start out by listing who I think will win each conference

SEC: Although I'd love to pick Auburn, our away schedule is ridiculous. I would have to say top5 in the country. So I will go with LSU vs. UGA, with LSU winning the SEC.

ACC: Miami vs. FSU in the conference championship. FSU returning to form this year with Jimbo Fisher.

Big 12: Texas vs. Nebraska in the conference championship. Nebraska with the win.

Big East: West Virginia takes the conference title this year. Rutgers will not be over .500

Big 10: Michigan wins at home vs. Ohio State, and thus the conference title.

Pac 10: USC will have 1 loss, but will still win the conference title because it is the Pac 10

As a Texas graduate and fan this team has question marks on the offensive line, linebackers and secondary. If they make it to the Big 12 Championship game, they'll beat Missouri. USC and LSU in the National Championship and USC as champion.

He got thrown onto a terrible team with a TERRIBLE coach. It was a sucky situation.

He went to high school like two counties away from where I live. Their team was unbelievable. I remember watching a game against my high school. I think the final was like 72-0

UCLA won't beat USC, but I do think USC will lose at least 1 game this year. I think everyone across the country except people in LA hate USC.

The heat is on

Can Michigan really live up to lofty preseason hype?

The Big Ten's media days, at least after commissioner Jim Delany threw a wet blanket on talk of expansion and the p.r. push for the yet-to-be-part-of-your-cable-package Big Ten Network became tiresome, were rightfully about Michigan. The Wolverines are the preseason conference favorite that everyone loves on paper but doesn't trust to run the table in real life. Most lines of questioning tried, some less delicately than others, to balance Michigan's great potential against its recent track record of great disappointment.....

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200....html?bcnn=yes

My bold prediction: Michigan will be National Champ this year.

You are crazy.. they will not make the SEC title game. They will get beaten @ LSU and watch out @ South Carolina.

And watch out against Auburn, you guys play Ole Miss while we play New Mexico state. Your players have a more physical game the week before, and it does take a toll on the players when they play tough SEC games back to back.

I don't see that happening after the loss to USC last year when Michigan was supposed to be "deserving" of a national title game.. Michigan was overrated, and Ohio State was too, and it showed in both of their bowl games. The game b/w Michigan and Ohio State was only good because of the rivalry they have b/w the two schools.

Where is auburn on that list? Yeah LSU is a good team, we might get beaten once, but we will get to the SEC title game.

Auburn is 14...right where they were last year when they beat UF AND LSU. I think we (AU) will have a good year (9-10 wins) but the schedule will prove to be too difficult in the end....unless the new OL gels fast.

As far as my predictions.....

ACC: FSU vs. VT with VT winning the conference championship
Big East: WVU goes 11-1 and wins the conference
Big 10: Wisconsin
Big 12: Texas goes 11-1 and beats Nebraska for the conference championship
Pac10: USC....no brainer....but finishes 11-1 before the BCS Championship
SEC: As hard as this for me to say....LSU will play UGA/UT for the conference championship. UF will finish 9-3 and finish tied for 3rd in the east with USC. Vandy and UK will both upset one of the big boys this year. LSU will play USC for the BCS Championship in New Orleans.

LSU ends up winning the BCS.

LSU has better talent and a more proven QB than UF does. Flynn has proven he can play in the big games (05' Peach Bowl). Tebow has had his opportunities in a big game, but has yet to play a full game from start to finish. Although he has had his jump pass for a TD, or his run always to the right for the occasional TD he still hasn't played a full game against a tough SEC defense.

Even your coach said in an interview, that during spring football he can sense if his team has what it takes to win, and this year he didn't sense that from the team.

You will lose @ LSU and probably @ South Carolina. Vs. UT and vs. Auburn you will have a tough time. I also wouldn't count out FSU this year either. They'll have a whole season to get used to their new coaches before they play @ UF.

I found this funny...and disturbing.

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier again gave a 25th-place vote to Duke in the preseason USA TODAY Coaches' Poll. The Blue Devils, for whom Spurrier was head coach in the late 1980s and an assistant in the early '80s, bring a 20-game losing streak into 2007.
Spurrier annually gives his final spot, worth one point, to the Blue Devils and stays with them until they lose. While all but the final regular-season vote is kept confidential, Spurrier historically has acknowledged he votes for Duke.

"They hired me twice when I had no job," he said Thursday through spokesman Steve Fink.

Said Jim Welch, USA TODAY deputy managing editor for sports: "It's clear that what once might have seemed quaint has begun to lose its charm. We're hopeful that before next season the coaches association can prevail upon Coach Spurrier to find another way to salute his former team — or that Duke gets better in a hurry."

Grant Teaff, executive director of the American Football Coaches Association, whose members vote in the poll, said Thursday that he plans to discuss the vote with Spurrier.

"This has come up over a period of time, and Coach Spurrier has his reason for doing this," Teaff said. "However, we will discuss this at the appropriate time as we have done with other issues regarding the poll as they come up."

The one point given to Duke does not affect any other team's standing in the poll, but one concern is what would happen if each of the 60 voters threw a vote toward a team for which he had a special feeling.

Polls also have come under more scrutiny during the Bowl Championship Series era because they are part of the formula used to decide who plays in the title game.

The final regular-season vote of the coaches is now made public. The Associated Press pulled its media poll out of the BCS after the 2004 season and was replaced by a poll conducted by Harris Interactive consisting of media members and former coaches, players or administrators.
Another proof these polls are full of biases.

O please that is so stupid to get mad about. Duke is terrible at football and the 25th place vote has no bearing on anything. Even if every coach did that with their 25th place vote it wouldn't matter.

Now if he voted Duke as #1 then that would cause a problem. As it is now who really cares..

South Carolina isn't even ranked on that prior list I believe. Gators go 10-2 at the max, I believe 11-1 and they get into the SEC conference title game.

I dont care if Tebow hasnt shown you enough, personally I believe he is the real deal. Who cares if he goes right every time if you cant stop him? Hes strong as hell. Percy Harvin is a complete STUD, better than any WR in the game in pure raw talent. Defensively we will have to see how they fill the holes.

OK, with replacing as many D-starters as you guys are (9) and many from last years 2 deep, who will you be able to stop?

Tebow, Harvin, and Caldwell are good...really good. However, the Gators have absolutely NO ONE at RB. Chris Rainey (the true frosh) will be very good, but he is still just a freshmen.

Lastly, I don't care what Gator fans say, but Chris Leak was just as hyped as Tim Tebow during his first year. Your own coach has even said many times that without Leak last year you would have had an 8-4 type year.

Again, the Gators are a good team but having a first year starting QB, replacing 9 D starters (15-16 off the 2 deep), and the schedule is brutal.

8-4 (at absolute worst), 9-3, or 10-2 is not a knock on the Gators at all. They will be very good at the end of the year and prove to be the favorites heading into 2009.

Since when do rankings matter? Tennessee was ranked #2 going into 2005 and finished, what, 5-7? USC wasn't ranked last year when they had a FG to win against the Gators in the Swamp with 10 seconds left.

Rankings don't matter at all. Any team can get beat by anyone any given week and that is what is so great about College Football.

Gators are one of the best recruiting teams in the nation, and everyone wants to play for Urban Meyer. Defense wont be an issue this year. We didnt win with a running back last year either, Wynn sucked. Tebow is our RB. I've watched every UF game and I go there for school, Chris Leak didnt win us the title, the OC did IMO. The gameplan he had was fantastic, all Leak had to do was get it there, our receivers were so wide open.

Don't forget gentleman that Meyer couldnt even run the most effective offense he knows because Leak wasn't a runner, now with Tebow at the helm, the offense will be even more explosive. Its going to get sickening for opponents watching Tebow, Caldwell, and Harvin doing their thing.
