Dark window tint, any North Carolinians here?
Dark window tint, any North Carolinians here?
Hi all, my dad gave me his TL and I have recently moved to NC in the past few months. The TL has 20% window tint all around and is registered in West Virginia, which doesn't give a crap about window tint!
I know for sure this car won't pass inspection in NC, since they require 35%. Without the hassle of removing it and reapplying it again, and costing $$$ I would rather put somewhere else, does anyone know any NC inspection stations that are private that I could go to in the Raleigh-Durham area that will let it slide? You can PM this information.
Now, has anyone removed tint themselves? I assume it's a very annoying process. My friends did it and accidently removed their defroster lines!

I'm in the Raleigh area. The actual passing percentage is 32.0 but tint darker than 35% will read less than 32.0% when inspected.
A few years back I could recommend a few places you could get away with dark tint when it was time for yearly inspection but the NC DMV really cracked down on that. Multiple places have DMV employees either do the inspections themselves or they have audits in which they observe the inspections, leaving no room for "hookups" with tint.
My only recommendation is to find a shop in a rural area that isn't considered an "official inspection station". They can still do the inspection and report it to the DMV, but it's less likely that a official will be there overseeing everything. Plus a small shop might take a few extra bucks for letting the tint slide compared to a large shop that doesn't care about an extra $20.
If you need a shop to remove/reapply tint, I can recommend you to the shop I went to in Cary. It's not exactly cheap but the tint has a lifetime warranty and the work quickly.
Good luck!
I had an issue with the dmv when a shop hooked me up a few years ago when I had my MDX, long story short a dmv agent cane to my house and place of work looking for my car to inspect the tint. luckily i was at neither place when he came but i immeadly took it off when i got wind that he was looking for me.
Removing the tint is very easy to do tho. Just pick a corner and peel.. Use hot soapy water on a rag to wet the leftover adhesive and a fresh razor blade at a flat angle to get off the hard stuff.

Don't know if this will help you.

Just leave the car registered in VA .
My brother lives in NJ n they don't allow any on drivers or pass front windows. I live in PA so his car and license are registered to my house.

The only problem with leaving a car registered in another state is that in NC you have 60 days to register your vehicle to NC. If you don't, then you're fined if you get pulled over. Now granted a lot of Officers won't citation for this on the first offense, but if you get pulled again and they're able to see that you were warned, they'll more than likely issue one. Especially if you get pulled by a State Trooper...they don't care.
I think CLtotheTL32 gave the best advice. Either rip it off and have it redone legally, or see if you can find a place off the beaten path that will look the other way. I know a few folks who own inspection stations so I can back up what CLtotheTL32 said about the audits... so it will be very hard to find someone to look the other way. You'll likely just need to remove it.
