Time to Climb
i should be stoked right now, but i'm confused and stressed the helk out (don't wanna make a bad/wrong decision):
1. move to denver (and rock climb like a maniac) and work for an additional $20k
2. stay here in tampa and accept a promotion so site director and make an additional $30k
my heart says denver because i THINK i'll be happier + money isn't at the top of my priority list. but an extra $10k a year + slightly lower cost of living could go a long way
???

If you're a rock climbing maniac, then I'd say the choice is pretty clear. The main question from my pov is: Is the stress of relocating + 10k less/yr worth the climbing?
Alternatively, for 10k a year you could take a lot of climbing trips...

I know right ... i've been throwing that back n forth for days now.
i'd look like a dick if i waiting until mon to make a decision and inform all parties. i really need to make my mind up by tomorrow afternoon ...
ps. MISS MY S2K (and my tsx for that matter)

Well if you say that there is an additional 10k plus a lower cost of living that would actually mean even more money for climbing trips. However, I would imagine it would mean less overall climbing time because you would have to use vacation time for it. In Denver you could probably get to many different sites for the weekend to climb.

^I think he's saying 10k more a year if he stays vs. lower cost of living if he leaves.
Would the Denver job offer a relo pkg?

Hmmm...
Minutes from climbing + out of country for half the month
vs
$10k more + lower cost of living (net $15k/yr maybe)
Are you about the money or traveling and following your passion? I think you know the answer.

Its all about opportunity cost.. Not the difference between the two. if you pick the job in Denver you miss out on the full value of the $30k and the cheaper cost of living in Tampa. If you choose to stay in Tampa you lose the full value of the $20k, closeness to climbing sites, out of country travel. You cant consider percentage of the difference in pay you need to look at the full number. What would be the marginal cost vs. the marginal benefit? if the MB>= MC then the choice is a good idea.
Decision making pitfalls:
Considering sunk costs- you've already paid and theres no refunds
not considering opportunity costs- these are important to see the full picture of what youre missing
considering averages- look at full dollar amounts
looking at percentages- look at marginal cost vs marginal benefit
Sorry about the long post I have an Econ test today and this stuff is burned into my brain. Econ is the study of choices. I'm done

So you start your new job tomorrow Bryan? Where is it and what are you gonna be doing?
Racer
It is the exact same stuff I was doing at BMW.
Take pictures of new and used inventory, upload to dealerships website, and print window stickers and buyers guides. I'm not sure what dealers I'm getting yet or how long my training is gonna last but with prior experience I should be able to learn their system pretty quick.
In a sense this job is better in that it's not contract based but it's also not really hourly either. I'll get a standard pay every day of $80 and a mileage wage of .37 untaxed. So I'm looking at about $400 or so a week.

Time to Climb
I appreciate the insight, everyone. I failed to mention the tampa gig has potential of up to $20k a year in bonuses as well! So $10k more salary + $5k in cost of living savings + (realistically) $12k bonus = $27k advantage over denver.
Well not quite, denver gig has profit sharing + stock options + my personal vacations r fully paid for (I earn all miles n rewards points from travel to philippines) = $7k
So staying in tampa carries an additional monetary benefit of $20k a year over denver!
Am I crazy for wanting to leave?

It would be cool if there were some rock climbers I could follow on instagram. Would be neat to see the views from some of these climbs.

Will do. I was impressed with how the photos of Jeremy's car turned out, so hopefully the lambo and alms cars turn out just as good.
