Factory, its through the individual program. They'll paint the car in any color you want for $5k-$8k depending on the color (pearl, flake, candy, metallic, flat, etc) and get you whatever color interior as well for a similar cost.
BMW charges for leather on every car. "Leatherette" is standard, the real stuff is a $2k option...which is ridiculous on a $63k car but so is the fact that they charge for back up cameras and navigation when both are standard on a $15k Corolla.

M3/4 (2 base options: leather or some magical cloth material), 5 series and up come with Dakota Leather standard, NOT leatherette.
There is the standard leather, then there is the extended leather , then there is the $4k leather option on the M3 is FULL leather, meaning in addition to the leather seats, it also includes leather dashboard and leather door panel and other areas that no one ever touches.
Also there are Merino leather option and there is the Individual Leather options with different colors, materials, design and stitching.
It gets pretty complicated if individuality is what the owner is going for. But at least it is always good to have options except you just have to pay for it.
Shit if you pay enough, i am sure BMW will even do 1 side LED and 1 side HID.

You are right about the individual color. Well for people who have $$ to spend, i guess $5k is not a lot to have a color that no one (they hope) would have within 100 miles radius. Hence Individual. I dont know the exact $$ amount but i know if the owner chooses a BMW color, any bmw color from current to past, it is less. It is more if you choose a color from another brand (in this case, Ferrari)

Not to get too technical, but you wouldn't be paying $102k for the one you have in the picture. Why? Well, the one with the $102k price tag you showed earlier has the $9k Carbon Ceramic Brakes option. The one in the picture above does not (the color of the calipers is the tell; gold on cc, blue on iron).

Saddle Brown is currently available on F30 (2016) but they were not available when i had my F30 (2013) and it is just a "regular" leather option. Not individual.
Of course, again if you are willing to pay, you can have saddle brown whenever you want
The exhaust is what stood out to me the most. Even a titanium catback shouldn't cost that much. Highly doubt the headers are changed at all, and doubt they are titanium if so. And $1500 for carbon exhaust tips?

let alone Ms, M performance exhaust (Axle back) for 335/435 is around $1200.

Exclusivity. Market adjustment. Makes sense to me. And I believe that's loaded to the hilt with some $$$$ options? Similar to what you can do easily with a Porsche.

he could get the fastest car with upgraded tires and the 2nd fastest car with upgraded tires for less than $100k. maybe even have left over $ to get a used IS350.

The hand-built M3 GTS costs about twice as much as a regular M3, but before you start complaining, be informed that the entire production of "up to 150," as M says somewhat cryptically, is sold out. None of them will come to the U.S., at least not officially; BMW didn't want to go through the trouble of official certification.

Arguable. Back in the day I would def give the nod to Merc, but now, I don't know. The brand has taken big hits in reliability and quality issues over the past 16 years. Shit, my friend with the SLS Black Series had quality issues with even that car, which is one of the best Mercs ever made. Also, how about used car prices. I would say Merc depreciation is (considerably?) worse than BMW.

with the small % of enthusiast and purist of each brand excluded, the general public still view Mercedes as a brand the benchmark of luxury and status, not BMW.

Just had a 2016 528 M sport fully loaded minus LED for loaner over the weekend.
the 4 cylinder is very smooth and quiet, unlike the same ones in the 2/3/4 series. But it does tell you if it is a 4 cylinder when you floor it.
Very comfortable and spacious. The interior quality is at least 1 full level above 3/4. The leather was so soft... But god i hated the car and could not wait to get my car back.
