No A/C in RL. Bypass relay & recharge?

Hello All,

The A/C in my 2005 RL went warm over the course of 3-4 days. The compressor was engaging at start-up a few different time and would continue working until I shut off the car. Now A/C compressor will not turn on, I am assuming this is because of low pressure and no freon. Has anyone had any experience bypassing the relay which would engage the compressor straight from the battery? I had to do this with an older sports car, but I am hesitant to do it in my RL. Once the compressor has engaged I will recharge it. No running compressor means no recharge.

Thank you

Pete

The 2005 A/C I issues have been well documented here. I think the stator is the majority culprit. Many have trouble shooted their issues by directly applying power and documented that as well. The service manual is probably going to a be a good friend in this process.

I checked the RL garage and didn't find much of anything

If you determine the problem is the clutch and stator (common issues), I have one I bought that I thought would fix my problem but I ended up replacing the whole unit.

Let me know, I'll save you a few bucks.

Ohm out the field coil in the service manual procedure. Then replace the field coil (stator) and the clutch and call it a day

Just got the same fix done on our RL at the dealer - under Acura Care - stator and clutch replaced due to no cold air. 89k miles. All good now.

what does "ohm" mean? to be more clear i pushed the clutch against the compressor and could feel spinning/rubbing. obviously no magnetic catch to engage. does the field coil and clutch sound like the appropriate fix? my repair guy said to replace compressor since there is power going to it.

Im leaving for south sunday morning... great timing. ugh

"Ohm out" is a quick way of saying to check for the amount of resistance found in the field coil. Unless you feel like going through the service manual yourself, then i would suggest going to the dealer because it sounds like your "repair guy" is not going to save you any money by just throwing a whole compressor at the problem. That is an over-repair in most cases.
