A/C compressor help!
A/C compressor help!
Hey to start out my 2007 RL only has 48k miles.
My ac compressor is not kickin on therefore I have warm air coming blowing
I just refueled the freon so that good. When I turn on ac the ac fan turns on
And that works fine. I changed the relay to see if that was the problem and that didn't change anything. I was reading some threads about the changing the stator and i don't think that's it but if it comes down to it I'll try. I was wondering if there is a way to check if the compressor itself is out. If I can somehow give direct power to the ac using battery to see if it clicks on or not. And how to check if there is power even coming to the compressor with a volt meter.
Any kind of help will be greatly appreciated
Just trying to isolate what the problem is and if the stator or clutch would make it not come on at all. Cuz it doesnt matter if the car is hot or cold it dosnt fire up what so ever. Thanks

UPDATE: so I hooked up my ac compressor directly from the battery and the clutch engaged which I'm assuming means the stator is good. So I went back to the fuse box to make sure I didn't miss a fuse and sure enough I did. BUT...here's the problem. I pulled the MG Clutch 7.5 amp fuse and it was busted. So I replaced it and want to turn the ac on and I blew again. I recheck all connections and they are all legit. So I tried it again with new fuse and sure enough same thing happened. Anyone have an idea what might be causing this? I traced all the wiring and there didn't seem to be any ripped or bare wire where it could short out and blow fuse. So I started thinking, if the compressor is out and when it tries to engage and the compressor won't let it turn would that make it over load and blow fuse? Anyone know where I can find diagram for the wiring of harnesses?
I changed the fan "icicle" relay a bit back and was wondering if there is an MG Clutch relay other than the fuse that might be out and if there is where is it located?

You could try a 10 amp fuse to see if it is just above the 7.5V threshold or much higher caused by a short.
There is a wiring diagram in the service manual. The manual is in the garage (2nd thread in the main forum), and I belive Carbon Legend consolidated all of the files into one download. He linked it in a thread, but it is very large. The wiring diagram will show you everything coming off of that fuse.

Thanks I'll try that. But if I use a 10 fuse and let's say it doesn't blow and one if the wires are bare and touching something won't that put the car under risk of catching fire? Lol next post will be -

Well, I would like to think that they chose a 7.5A fuse wisely enough and that a 10A would not allow enough more amps to start a fire, BUT you don't have to keep it that way. You could test it to see if it works, and that would eliminate faulty parts and point to faulty wiring.
So I tried putting a 10a fuse in this morning and still it blows out. I was looking at the wiring diagram and from what I could understand the fuse goes before the relay and not after. And since it's blowing the fuse before relay that either could mean that it's faulty relay. Correct me if I'm wrong. Another reason might be a)short somewhere or b) the field coil drawing too much power to itself. I'm gonna do what I didn earlier and hook up direct power to the compressor but set up a fuse in between the connections to see if it pops. If it does that would mean field coil is bad. I'm gonna rule out all possibilities before I get my check book out lol.
Number 12 fuse. 7.5a fuse. The mg clutch
I'm thinking even if clutch engages the field coil might still be faulty therefore burning out the fuse if it's drawing too much power to it. I'm gonna test that tomorrow by hooking up direct power to the compressor from the battery with some alligator clips and have an online fuse to see if it blows. Just a test. I'll keep y'all posted

Measure the resistance of the coil and use Ohm's law. You know the voltage, you can measure the resistance, if the result is greater than 7.5 amps then it could possibly be that some of the coil has shorted.
Also, call the dealer and ask if they would give you the resistance value of the coil.

Any multimeter (hand held voltmeter) should have an ohmmeter setting to measure resistance.
So, as you have already stated, the only things in the line are a relay and the A/C clutch. I doubt the relay could be shorting the line to ground. That seems to be the least likely. I would guess that your A/C compressor clutch is shot.

Well I eliminated the compressor by unplugging it completely and replacing the fuse and when I turn ac on it burns out again do the problem is somewhere else. Most likely a short somewhere. Guess I'm gonna have to work my way down the line and eliminate the problem.
