Emission System - Check Engine Light

Hey guys,

Got a 2005 RL with 48K on it and the check engine light turned on today. Says Emission system issue. I thought it was the fuel cap and re-tightened it to 3 clicks. Restarted the car and the light stays on.

Any quick tests to resolve this or should I be heading over to the dealership tomorrow to get it checked out?

Thanks,
Rob

The light would not go out immediately, even if the issue was a loose gas cap. I would give it 2 or 3 stops and starts with a minimum of 20 minute total driving time.

If the light stays on after that, then I would take it to the dealer. You're about at the mileage where an O2 sensor would need replacing.

robarsan offers solid advice.

You can also head to an Autozone if you've got one in your area; they'll hook a reader to your OBDII port so that you can find exactly what the code triggering the light is. I also have a Scanguage so I don't even have to leave the house.

More than likely, it's a gas cap issue though....it's an endemic issue to Honda/Acura vehicles. There should just be a "gas cap off" light on the dash to avoid questions.

an O2 sensor does not need replacing at around 48K or anywhere near that.
An O2 sensor can easily go 100K, unless it gets fouled by leaded gas (as would the cat be fouled) which is near impossible today as there is no leaded gas.

"Can" and "should" are the operative words here. You're right in that the new sensors should last up to 100K miles.
I've had two sensors go on my Audi at 70K.

I think we're going to do some running around today, so I'll just keep an eye on it.

I've read, after a quick google search, that sometimes the gas gaps go bad. Anyone run into this?

Thanks for the solid advice, I thought the system reset faster then that.

this is an occasional issue on Honda vehicles. On 2002 S2000s this led to a TSB requesting fuel cap replacement.

So far, I haven't heard about this issue on RLs.

My TL did the same thing. Check Engine light was on, it had something to do with the Emissions. But, when my car did this the RPM's would bounce and go extremely low when idling. Almost like it was going to die.

Turned out to be an Idler Control Sensor. $450 later, it was running fine, all lights off.

Don't know if this helps, but good luck with the RL.

Dealership wasn't available but now my SH-AWD light has come on with the emissions light.

Should I be concerned? Going to try to get to the dealer monday.

If your curious about the code and the possible causes, you can purchase a OBD II code reader from an auto parts house for about $60. (good investment) It will allow you to read and erase power train codes (check engine light) as you feel comfortable with. Without a code reader the light will eventually reset itself after a certain number of cycles if it is the gas cap issue. Let us know what you find out. My car going to dealer on Monday too but for other issues. Good luck.

Yes. Dealer time. Probably a borked sensor. Def. not a gas cap issue.

I looked at a 2005 RL with 57k on it today that had some "messages" and the check engine light was on. Emissions system and All-Wheel drive codes:

Emissions System P0174
All-Wheel Drive 77
Emissions System P0171

Sounds like a dirty sensor for the P0171 and 174 errors .. not sure about the All-Wheel Drive 77 error code though.

I'm curious to see how you make out on Monday.

before you go to the dealer and lose an arm and a leg go to autozone and get it scanned and tell me the codes. I am tech so i have full access to Mitchell ON demand so i can give you the probable causes behind the code or codes. just let me know

If it was a gas cap issue, you ould get a "check fuel cap" warning.

More than likely there is a problem with the EGR valve. THere is a TSB out there for this issue. It calls for the EGR valve to be replaced along with all the fuel injectors.

I had it occur on mine. The AWD light is just a secondary warning. Apparently the AWD warning comes on often when the CEL comes on. Don't know why it's programmed to do that, but that's how it is. More than likely the AWD light will eventually go off within a day or so.

When mine went off,the dealer cleared the codes and ordered the parts. During the week or two that it took for the parts to come in, the lights never went back on, and there weren't any driveability issues.

Haven't had the issue resurface again.

My gas cap issue took about 3 days to reset before the light did not come on again.

Teeeheeeheee.... I know EXACTLY what is going on.....had the exact same thing happen to me a few months ago. There is a sensor in the shifter that has gone bad. Scan my previous posts and you'll see my comments. Yes, this requires a dealer visit and no it won't go away. I also got an AFS failure.

Dealer called back, it was a corkscrew wire that leads to a sensor on the IM. $6 wire, $350 in labor. Car will be fixed by the end of the day.

Apparently, mice like to chew on this wire. Now its coated with a pepper coating to reduce the chances of it happening again.

Oh and the 2009 TL is pretty nice.

Cannot blame Acura on that one. Still some of the most reliable cars made.

I have an 05 RL and the same issued happened to me where rats chewed on the knock sensor and sub harness. I live in Manhattan and unfortunately there are more rats than cars in this city. The parts were $17 for the subwire, $55 for the knock sensor and $290 in labor. It's been exactly a year since I had this repaired and the car is displaying similar symptoms ( check engine light, SH- AWD , and now VSA). I'm taking the car back to the dealership next week and hoping I don't get raped there

Got the check emission system light today. Turns out to be a bad knock sensor or wire, code P0325 - Powertrain Knock Sensor. Just ordered parts to get them replaced.

Replaced the messed up knock sensor wire harness and knock sensor today. Rodent got into the lower intake manifold and ate the harness. There's rodent pellents all over. I wrapped steel wool around the new harness and taped with electrical tape in hope of preventing this from happening again.

I speculate this is where the rodent came through
