Angry Multi HVAC Blower Motor Failure

This will be the 3rd time I'm replacing the hvac blower motor in this shit 2016 ILX. When replacing it the 2nd time I took the motor apart to see what was making this faint burning smell and sure enough the bearings where eating it's self and aswell as the brushes and the turbine, creating this very fine dust that when checking the tubing vents right after the blower motor where coated with it. I wiped down the inside on the vents as far and I could reach and replaced the blower motor. Now it's doing it again 3rd time this is just another stupid Honda design.

-When I install it myself 30 day warranty
-The dealer installs 1 year / 20,000 kms

ILX now has 232,000ish kms

Takes 10 mins to replace, remove plastic cover with pull tabs and the motor has 3 screws and unclip the wire harness , so I'm going to get the dealer to do it this time as I'm sick of paying $70CAD for a motor every year.

I get the dealer to save the old motor and will take it apart to pictures to post here.

Now my question is does any one here notice this or are you all just a oblivious!!! because it know it happening you guys just don't pay attention!!! I bet you guys don't even replace the cabin air filter.

We see your post but I haven't had the issue you have. You've driven 232k kms on a 2016 ILX? My 2016 has about 10k miles on it.

well with 10k you won't see any of these symptoms, that's like comparing one from the show room, c'on man! and yes, 236,664 kms as of today

As you guys can see the brushes are wearing the contacts on the shaft and creating fine copper and lead dust. This can't be good to breath in over time. I will be contacting Honda customer relations. I'm ashamed with anyone having a good amount of kms/miles that own any of the Acura's that share the same blowers 2013-2019 ILX ALL plus the RDX ALL use the same part number. That are ignorant / oblivious to what's happening. I 100% guaranty yours is doing the same thing and your breathing it in your just noise blind.

If people want to check yours it's easy and takes 10 mins if that, here's how;

- remove cover, pull down near the 3 pull clips then remove the bulb and wire by turning top down towards you.

- remove blower, unplug wire hardness big white clip and wire clip to give more slack, support blower with hand and remove 3 screws, use socket 8mm is easiest.

Now to check if your blower has built up dust shavings inside, tilt sideways and lightly tap on counter, either some will fallout or at least you can view inside the space where the white fan blades and the motor housing is. also you'll smell a faint burnt smell. good luck

As I said this is my 3rd time replacing this; so that means the original 1 failed, plus 2 replacements now, and they all did the same thing. Had the car on the road since June of 2015

I only have 15k miles and don't use the blower much, but it looks like they need a softer/higher lubricity material for the brushes.

15,000 miles = about 25,000 kms, not even close yet but I'm sure it's starting, and yes correct, they need to do a re-design, Honda is still actively using this on their new 2019 models too.

And why do you drive around with the blower turned completely off? either you like wind noise or stuffy cabin air.

as you can see with my screw driver I'm pointing to the deep grove and the lip worn in from the brushes

It's crazy how much shorter these brushes are compared to new ones.

this is what we are breathing in guys over time, can't be good, I can smell it getting worst and worst over time, same pattern after replacing. We see what Honda has to say about this!!!

Isn't that why they cut a hole in the roof?

Well, it's definitely disappointing that this blower seems to have a design flaw. I guess you're the first to encounter this due to your super high miles.

it doesn't take that long or that many kms / miles before it starts to happen, look at how many times and the dates of when i bought this car new to when i replaced the blower motor.

- bought the car and on the road June 2015
- replacement 3/8/2016
- replacement 3/7/2017
- replacement again now in 2/19/2019

This will be happening to the avg. user that puts 25,000 - 30,000 a year, if you have close to 100,000kms or 62,137 miles take your blower motor out tilt it sideways on a table and lightly bang it, you'll see the fine dust metal shaving come out and or look in inside between the white fan blades and the black housing and you'll see yours is doing it too and your breathing that in. Don't be scared it takes all of 10 mins to do.

Submitted an official complaint with Honda/Acura Canada about this issue.

My dealer Gat. Acura will also be contacting the Tech Hot Line to submit there info on this issue, could take up to 6 month to hear back. Do not go to Camco Acura dealer they will not help when it comes to very technical issue's like this, just warring people to avoid a headache.

I think you may have just solved my issue! Had my own thread for this same exact thing. Check it out .https://acurazine.com/forums/acura-i.../#post16568959

here’s a video of the actual chirping coming from he motor. Towards the end of the video, I shut the AC off and and you can hear a wheel like sound that goes with the chirping: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWXG...ature=youtu.be

This is currently happening on my 2017 ILX. Its the annoying rattling noise with reduced fan speed. bumping the side of the console seems to get it going again but the damn car only has 50k miles on it. I bought the extended warranty from the dealer but to be honest im probably just going to fix it myself. Every car ive ever owned ive to change them. Car is super clean but this is annoying as hell

I have 87,000 miles on my 2015 and I've never had issues with mine. I've replaced my cabin filter every 15k but i also dont daily drive my car. Maybe just bad luck with your problem or I'm lucky. Haven't seen many owners with your issue on here.

Hi, I had the same problem 5 years ago, replaced the blower motor and it's still humming along fine, no problems, dust or bad smell. I guess it depends on the manufacturer of the motor, perhaps I was just lucky and got one from a good supplier? My ILX has now 190,000 kms, manual transmission and am very happy with the car, no problems whatsoever, just changing oil and brake pads. Hoping that the dealer will install a good motor this time for your peace of mind, good luck.
