2016 ILX Issues?
2016 ILX Issues?
Hi so I have a 2016 Acura ILX premium, I bought it used in march of this year with only 21k miles. I love the car but I'm having some issues with it, about two weeks ago I was pulling out of parking lot making a right turn and when I gave it gas the rpm's revel up to about 3-4k rpm but I didn't move. The transmission slipped, I was so caught of guard and confused because this is a new car and an Acura at that! anyways it has done it 4 times in total now over the past couple weeks and only while making a right turn. I took to the Acura dealership and they said they couldn't recreate it and recommend that I do the transmission maintain service, which just changes the transmission fluid. $178 later no answers and it did it again the next day. Also I'm experiencing a clunk in the rear end when letting off the gas quickly while driving at slow speeds? Does anyone have any advice or has anyone experienced these issues as well? Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

The DCT8 is a manual transmission with computer control so it has the gear lash clunk. The clunk won't hurt anything, but it can be prevented by driving more like a manual transmission. (no rapid off/on throttle)
The reason it seems to be a right turn thing is because a quick stop (not rolling thru) a stop sign or signal is usually faster than doing a left.
There was a program update that made it a little less pronounced that may or may not have been preformed on yours.
I hope my explanation isn't too confusing.
Shouldn't you be under warranty? Why did they ask you pay for that service? Did you have the DCT8 transmission TSB performed? It reprograms the software to allow for smoother shifting. I personally never noticed any harsh shifting but I had it done anyway. Also, what DaIll1 says is correct about the DCT. It feels different than a typical automatic. I notice it most in stop and go traffic. It isn't as smooth and there is some "clunking" but nothing major. Of course, at higher speeds, the shifts are fast and smooth.
Thank you both for your info it is very helpful, and yes I am still under warranty so I'm not sure why I had to pay for the transmission service. I am going to take it back to the Acura dealership and ask about the software upgrade. It is a great car other than this and drives fine both before and after the events, no warning lights before, during or after.

I was able to get my TSB 17-015 done for free even though I was past the 60K Powertrain warranty on my 2016 ILX Premium. I was at like 70K at the time and I went in for a axle recal check, while I was talking to the service adviser I mentioned to him that TSB 17-015 should be done on the car at the same time since they were looking around the transmission anyway and I had felt some of the clunk that others mentioned. I just provided him with a print out of the PDF so he could hand it to the technician.
The software update is listed as Flat Rate 0.2hr job, so even if you had to pay for it, it be cheep maybe $30 figuring a $150 per hr labor rate or the like. But since you only have 21k miles on it, it should be a non issue.
I went 4ish years with the original firmware on the transmission and never really noticed an issue aside from me doing dumb things to the gear box, like the aforementioned rolling stop-go jerk you can get. But I always knew how the automated manual in the 8speed was designed to work, so my driving style adapted around it.
By the time the software was updated, I had already done the 60k Transmission Fluid change at home with 3qts of Acura ATF-2 ([PN: 08200-9015A] Just check on Amazon, or an OEM parts dealer website that will honor that price, walk-ins to a dealership will charge you more like $15 each). Its easier to change than engine oil frankly, just drain from the bottom drain bolt, and refill from the top fill bolt, easy-peasy. Stuffs not expensive, like $8-ish a quart. Compare that the insane $35-$55 a quart you pay for ATF 3.1 used in the 9 Speeds for the V6's... and that has to be changed like every 15-30k, fawk that! Acuras ATF-2 DCT fluid is basically glorified engine oil that you would use in a manual gear box, just with different viscosity and additives to work with the torque converter in there.
That being said even with fresh fluid which helped, after the update I did notice it was a bit more forgiving and smoother in driving conditions, and I even think it made the standard D mode feel a little less 'elastic' as it was before. It kinda gave the transmissions D mode a bit better logic I feel. Which is a good thing, car always felt a little funny driving in D mode at medium throttle before.
I still love the 8 Speed DCT in the ILX, its a real cool gear box and it works well with the lighter weight of the ILX vs the TLX.

Addendum:
Also related to your noises from the rear, some owners also noticed this as well (never happened on mine, and again I'm well into the cars happy middle age of miles)
It's something related to the rear bumpstops in the shocks back there. So I'd print these out as well and bring it over next time.

Any other weird concerns, I'd recommend checking out the 2016 ILX TSB page we have here on the forum.
Its constantly updated as new things TSBs crop up, or recalls get added. Its a great resource when you think there may be something you notice and want to make sure your not going crazy lol.

I agree on the above statement. Paying for something like that simply means the Service Adviser didn't know about the TSB's or thought he could get away from it.
You should make a stink about it, mention something like "why should I come back for service in the future if you cant trust their service advisers to do their due diligence in understanding their vehicles and TSBs?"
Not to be an ass, but seriously, a low mileage thing like that is no excuse, they should have just covered it as a sign of good grace at least.
