IMO, the Civic will close the gap because it needs to. It's more important for the corporate bottom line to sell 300,000 Civics a year than it is to sell 30K ILX (or 40K as the case may be). AND the only way to achieve that goal is to outsell the other competitors that DO NOT include the ILX, cars like Focus, Corolla, etc.

The thing is, people will cross shop cars between the two brands. Honda knows this and if the customer chooses the more 'practical' Accord or Civic over XYZ Acura model I'm guessing the company is ok with this. As long as they still buy H/A.

One point to consider, people don't buy cars for purely 'logical' reasons. For some the ILX may appeal because it's NOT a Civic, even if the Civic was all they needed. Maybe they just want to be unique? Ironically, people on these types of enthusiast boards may deride someone for making a 'stupid decision' because the Civic is a 'better buy'. Then that person would go buy a Civic Si and spend $4K on wheels and tires, a body kit, dynamat to quiet the car down and an HID retrofit kit to make his car unique. He'd then proclaim how much he saved over an ILX and he has an LSD. Personally, I'd just buy the 'better' car (for me) and think that modding is silly. But to others, modding is part of the hobby and in expression of their individuality. To each his own I say.
You could also choose to be unique and purchase a ZDX or a CR-Z, but given the sales target and the demographics for the ILX, I doubt that's in Acura's best interest.

The sale numbers for the next few months will determine what Acura will do in terms of updates and changes for the next model year, in the mean time, wether we agree or not, people are out there comparing it and cross shopping in a very competitive market with not only other Honda products but naturally with other manufacturers offerings.

And while people are doing their cross-shopping against the likes of Toyota, Ford, Buick and hyunday, I would rather see the ILX on top of those people's list and not see Acura happy with just selling a few thousand units a month because the Civic is selling 300K units.

If you factory is maxed out, there isn't much you can do. You can't sell more if you can't make more. But you can increase the profits on the cars if you take content out (Civic) or price it higher (ILX). Not saying I agree (or know for sure) with the (apparent) choice, just that I understand how it could come to pass (if that's what's really happening).

PS, we love our CR-Z because it's unique and the best ~$20K car to suit our needs.

I saw one on I85 last Sunday coming back to the DC area. Very nice looking car from all angles. It was cruising @ about 75 mph. At first I thought it was an RL , then I realized it was a much smaller car . Hopefully by the time I'm looking for a car, it might have a "real" engine with the AT.

Ahhhh yes 50K miles seems more and more likely these days, Tyson. Definitely exciting!

@ this rate you'd definitely break a 100K miles in 2-3 years.

I don't know if they offer public tours but if you're in the area (Greensburg, Indiana), PM me and I'll give you the name of the person who showed me around - maybe she could hook you up with an inside look!

I'm home from my 3,244 mile journey to Wisconsin and back to Arizona now. The ILX is getting 33 mpg. I traveled on average 624 miles over the last 6 days. Car is awesome!

Already over 9k on the odometer and it's been through 14 states:
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Idaho
  • Illinois
  • Iowa
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • New Mexico
  • Oklahoma
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Wisconsin

Not bad considering it was barely rolling off the assembly line 2 months ago.

Last night in New Mexico:

Tons more on my blog - I posted every night of the journey:

You inspired me to take a spin through the Acura dealership tonight. While I'd never part with my TSX, I have to say, it is a sharp looking car.

Also, I want to be famous with Acura like you... got any tips?!

Congrats, man!

Mileage update -

I drove from Phoenix to San Francisco & back for the weekend. Car's doing awesome. MPG's are actually getting better the more miles it gets!

The car had 16 miles on it when I got it, 2 months ago exactly.

This is the house from Mrs. Doubtfire.

As always, tons more pics on the blog:

I love to drive and I "make" time to drive. I still manage to put on all these miles even with a Mon thru Fri day job. Just gotta have a sense of adventure and know how to pack a lot into every single weekend!

There's really no "secret" to getting high miles out of a car. In the case of my Legend, I've only ever used conventional 5W30 oil but I'm very vigilant about the 3,000 mile interval on changes. As for other guidelines: conservative driving habits, 91+ octane fuel, preventive maintenance, using OEM replacement parts are a few of the tricks that I stand by.

Haha! I don't consider this fame. At the end of the day, I'm just a normal average Joe... er, Tyson. That's what Acura liked about me. I'm a totally unbiased regular guy who's a die-hard advocate of the brand yet doesn't work for them.

You're right about the blog. Long story:
  • Several years ago I was invited to participate at a Honda S2000 meet at Acura HQ in LA. I took my Legend which had 441k miles on it at the time. I met a few key Acura people and took note of their contact information.
  • March 2011. 467,000 miles. Started Drive to Five. Emailed those contacts at Acura and invited them to follow my travels.
  • ~September 2011. Acura desires to coordinate the date that I will roll 500,000 miles and have it happen at headquarters.
  • November 2011. 500,000 mile - "Drive to Five" celebration.
  • December 2011. Acura contacts me about a new model that's coming out in 2012. I flew to HQ to see a rough prototype. They asked if I'd be interested in being a part of this launch, since the ILX is targeted to my demographic.
  • Jan-May 2012. I was given the ability to get an inside look at the ILX development, attend a press launch event, travel to the factory where it would be built, and meet with the design teams for a series of YouTube spots.
  • Jun 2012. Acura hands me the keys to the ILX in the colors, accessories, and trim level that I wanted in exchange for sharing my experience with the car over the coming year. Registration and insurance is covered by Acura but any fuel and other travel expenses are still my own responsibility.
That's pretty much it! This has been, and continues to be, an incredible experience and I am honored that Acura has allowed me to be a part of it.

iPhone 4 and Verizon. For the most part - love it. Sometimes the service struggles. Today there were huge chunks of I-5 in central California where I wasn't getting 3G. I transitioned from Sprint many years ago and never looked back. Great luck with Verizon overall.

Yeah the hill start feature is def handy. Though I almost wish I could deactivate it at times. Takes some of the fun / challenge out of handling a manual transmission on hills! I'm all about "raw" (unassisted) driving experience. Maybe I'm crazy for that.

I'm not sure how much about the details of my "arrangement" with Acura they want me posting on a public message board, so I PM'd you. Anyone who is curious is welcome to reach out to me too.

Coming from a 515k mile (original suspension) Legend, the ILX actually feels pretty tight to me. I do, however, think it would be nice to bring the ride height of the ILX down a little and give it a more aggressive stance. At this time I haven't researched any suspension tuning options but maybe down the road I'll do so. I haven't lowered a car since my 1989 Prelude Si when I was 17.

Those are a few of the tentative plans I have on the calendar for the ILX.

Nope, not crazy. I hear that a lot. Though, it would come in handy for me sometimes.

I actually like most of the lineup. Realistically a 3G TL (the 4G confuses me and the sales agree with me, though the refresh has made some improvements that I like, but not enough to actually stretch to buy one. It's kinda ugly and not financially wise for me to buy.) or a TSX SE 6spd. the ILX is definitely catching my eye more an more. I have a 10 month old girl, so 4 doors is a must. I really like the MDX too, but that's overkill and wayyy too expensive. I just keep watching and learning more about the ILX, it's definitely another great car IMO. I'm thinking the TSX with the more room would be a better pick, especially carrying around baby gear, but just can't write off the ILX. It's just as nice IMO.

I'm assuming Honda will add the ED motor to the ILX next year or the MMC.

the ilx is just as roomy as the tsx was in terms of rear passenger space...people who sat in my tsx feel equally as comfortable, though the roof line is a little lower for taller passengers.
