How many buttons is too many?
How many buttons is too many?
This was mentioned in the Motoring 2013 review of the ILX and I have seen it mentioned quite a few times in many reviews of most Acuras.
I have never really understood it myself. Imo they pretty much seem logical to me and can't see why I wouldn't want them there. I also see other manufacturers that have quite a few buttons on the steering wheels although Acura seems to have more than most.
In your minds what buttons should not be there?

Err, the review is of the Tech Pckg.. it has a few more buttons than the premium right? So, I can't say. I was gonna say what car has so many less buttons as the Premium lol but I have seen in the Tech and they do have quite a bit, my TSX Tech was the same way.
I use all of the buttons. In fact, I find myself playing most aside from volume and channel with the MID display buttons to check my MPGs, play with the hybrid green ball, see my range... Can't think of a single button that is useless!
Does it have more buttons on the steering wheel? I could be wrong but I didn't think it did. I believe the ILX 6mt had the same number of buttons that my ZDX had on it, could be wrong though.
The ILX from what I saw Premium to Tech is nothing additional on the steering wheel, just a few more on the main unit.
I wouldn't say there is too many buttons.. going back.. has anyone seen the pre 2013 accord radio unit?? The buttons are not only numerous but they are HUGE...

I agree (on amount and they physical controls vs touch screen). Not only is it more responsive but the haptic feed back is nice. I can't imagine mucking around with a touch screen to adjust volume, temperature, etc. Seems rather dangerous. With a button/knob, you know exactly where it is and how it works without having to really take your eyes off the road.
I so very am jealous of that be screen you Tech Pack guys got though...
Good thing I got the motor most of you want! MUAHHA
With so many features in so many cars now though I just expect a button for each thing.. luckily Honda is figuring out how to reduce that by consildating buttons.

Every time I see one of these "too many buttons" complaints I always want to know what is their idea of the "perfect" vehicle? What do these reviewers think is an example of a car that offers a similar amount of technology but fewer buttons?
I love the TL's interior! It is so inviting. When I get to my destination I have a hard time getting out of the car. I think all the buttons serve a purpose. There are buttons on the right for the passenger to control their climate control. I use a navigation app called Waze on my iPhone and it is completely touchscreen and difficult to control while driving because the touch needs to be still and with the car bobbing down the road it takes several attempts to activate the right button so I like that the TL isn't touchscreen.

Ah! I thought it was different because of the Tech. I noticed there weren't the buttons for passenger climate control but thought they were built in multi-functionally. The Acura interiors are all very similar. Hard to tell them apart.
I think the ultimate conclusion to this post is the same Auto-reviewers who pretend like the ILX is a spitting image of a Civic are the same types to complain about "too many" buttons.. like what is the perfect car? lol
Myself I like buttons rather than going through menus on a touch screen for dash controls. My real question should have been what is too many on the steering wheel? What do people consider to be unneccesary on on the steering wheel?
They all seem to be logical to me and if not on the steering wheel then where would they be more functional? It just seems an illogical critique to me.
let's try to critique it.. so I got my radio controls (volume, mode, channel), I got my cruise controls, I got my phone/hands free controls, and my MID screen controls...
So you're telling me it's TOO much to be able to view your car's mileage/trip and customize it's functions (if need be from a parked station), control my radio without reaching over, accept and make phone calls without ever touching my phone.. AND I should be able to set my cruise control???
That's ridiculous!!!!!!!!

Left hand buttons control the i-mid and phone. The rear 3 buttons on the wheel control volume and radio preset. Front 6 on right side are for cruise control. I forgot what the the rear 3 are on the right hand side.
What about BMW offering their $1700 optional performance steering wheel?

Just on the actual wheel you can view:
EfficientDynamics Mode: Real-time fuel efficiency data. Average fuel economy and average speed. Water and oil temperature (water temperature only in diesel cars). Fuel efficient shift points via LED shift lights and EfficientDynamics Index (“EDI”) calculation. Sport Mode: Built-in stopwatch. G-force meter for longitudinal and lateral acceleration. Water and oil temperature and multicolored LED (red and green) shift lights for optimal performance. Race Mode: Stopwatch with storage of values of up to 30 laps (lap time, max speed, max G-force). Measurement of up to nine section times within each lap. 1/4 mile race setting (“XMAS” tree LED light countdown, reaction time, 60’ time, 330’ time, 1,000’ time, 1/8 and 1/4 mile times and trap speeds)...
Of course, because its BMW its not excessive/illogical...its advanced and forward thinking.

It would be nice if some of the buttons were virtual, context senstive, or multi purpose.
For example, the up/down button could be used for temperature, volume, channel, and windshield wiper speed depending on the context.
