Xfinity & Direct TV

I only have these two choices. I would like to get your input on these two.
Does DirectTV still have blackouts when it rains?

DirecTV will suck during times of extreme weather. I can attest to that.

DirecTv is a satellite dish, is always gong to be affected by rainfade. No way around that, has to get the signal from the sky. I would take DTV or cable any day though. Had it for 9 years over Cox, switched to FIOS just about a year ago.

xfinity here. no complaints and i've used comcast for years. triple play is worth it if you will actually use a phone, internet, and cable each month. i have no use for a home phone, so i got the "double play" with a bunch of extra movie channels, faster internet speed, etc for around the same price.

i'm happy with xfinity.

Same here. I have magicjack as my home phone and the xfinity double play. They gave me a great deal with Showtime and Starz for free. Only pay $5 extra a month for HBO.

I have xfinity double play for the internet and tv package. I have no internet complaints but they jerk you around with the tv. I've been a comcast customer for years... first they gave me HBO & Starz for free. Then we had a bad black out and it messed up my cable. So they gave me HBO still and then Showtime. They argued with me that I never had Starz on promo for anything even tho it was on my bill. After the promo's ended they said I could have HBO for 10/month for 6 months and then its 24/month. Or any other premium channel is 24/month. Dealing with the premium channels is a pain but the regular programing is great. Tons of HD channels. They get you on equipment and HD charges tho.

That's the key word. Under normal weather, and that includes rain showers or light thunderstorms, it's fine. No fade, no pixelation.

I'd go with whichever you can get cheaper. They both have their pros and cons.

My parents have had DirecTV for 10+ years, and I've had Dish Network for 4+ years and both my parents and I have had minimal service loss due to weather. Even up at their house in the mountains...it's surprising how much snow can accumulate on the dish before it noticeably affects service.

The better the dish is aligned, the more resistant it is to situations that attenuate the signal.

I battle with my neighbors palm trees from time to time, but otherwise no complaints here.

Cheaper?? Look at the longer end of the deal, what the price will be once your two year commit is up.

That's what I meant.

I have Dish because it is the cheapest for my needs.

In Miami? Oh yeah. & give the way it rains down here it may go out often. If you go sat make sure it's securely mounted. On the plus side when crap comcast goes out for days after a hurricane Sat stays up.
Comcast sucks! At least all my dealings in FL have sucked. They have horrid CS.
But I have them because It's free in my complex. I would rather have sat.

Yes. About $4/mo. While not insignificant, it's not enough to tempt me to go back to cable.

Especially now that I'm out of contract and can bargain down some new stuff. DTV loves to give you free shit.

Have you tried to get free shit from them? They have gotten pretty tight on what they'll do lately. One of the reasons I left them, they didn't want to deal on upgrading me to HDDVR a couple of times, even though was 8 year customer. When I called to tell them to shut off service, I switched to FIOS, they flipped a wig trying to get me to stay. Told them to save their breath.

I will be soon (trying to get more free shit). When I canceled some of my premium services, I got offers for 6 months free of said services. My HD is free currently.

I'll either be asking for a HD-24 to upgrade my current DVR, or so many months of premium content.

I've had both and I live in Miami. First I had Comcast but they have horrible customer service and few HD channels. I still have them for internet so if there's an outage it's like shooting craps for a rep that knows what they're doing.

I switched to DirecTV and got a free HD DVR that was new at the time but even with tons of updates it's slow as hell. Rainfade is really not that bad. Only on bad raindays will you see fade so I defer to my recorded stuff. I rarely have had issues of trying to watch something but couldn't because of rain but our schedules may vary. Then again when they do the initial install make sure you have a strong satellite signal. The techs our subcontacted out and it's a pain getting them there and even if you call them directly they still screw up appointments. But once you get it, you'll be fine. Plus things like the channel showing 8 sports or news programs at once, apps on your TV, watching DVR stuff on your computer, etc are nice additions. I think Comcast/Xfinity only has an iPhone app that you can manage your DVR while DirecTV has one where you can set recordings, buy PPV, and search listings.

I got two years no charge for the on screen guide and free HD for awhile, but when I wanted the HDDVR. They were buttheads until I called to disco.

I hated comcAst when I had it. Their Internet speed was never consistent but the cable was alright. We had a lot of pixelation for cable. Can't comment on dtv but I'm considering it.

I love my charter Internet but I refuse to pay 45 extra dollars for channels 1-90 (I currently have basic channels 1-20)

The trick, according to the deal websites, is be willing to cancel. That's the magic word. Some have even gone through with scheduling the disco and either calling back later to cancel it, or getting another rep with a little less willpower.

Haven't had to push for anything yet, though. It also depends on how many discounts one currently gets - there is a limit, and that limit is pretty hard.

I told them a couple of times that FIOS had been digging up the common area of my yard and that if they wouldn't deal I'd be gone. Has been better anyways, been paying much less than per month for phone, TV and internet from FIOS.

^Ditto since ATT is our local, not Verizon. FIOS is probably the best.

Oh yeah. Rare rain outage>frequent cable pixelation. On Comcast it was nasty. That was another reason I switched. I think for SD channels does Comcast look better than D*. But who cares.

I had DirecTV; loved it. It only went out once in almost two years. The deal and the service was much better than I ever had with cable (Time Warner here). Only canceled DTV because I went OTA (Netflix FTW).

I would love to have FIOS for my internet, but ATT came in, not Verizon. ATTs prices aren't much better than cable's.

I think I am going with Direct TV. Comcast does not have good deals for existing customers. I have the plain 1990's basic cable. Dont even have have a cable box. Straight into tv coaxial connections. But since Xfinity came along, they have cut some channels. So I cant even watch the basketball games on TNT or SunSports.

Sam's Club was giving me a great deal like a month ago on Dtv. Like 1 DVR, 2 DH's 1 digital, 1 year contract, and it was going to be like 45 a month for a year. I still have to keep my comcast internet though...

If you get a good installer that properly aligns the DTV dish, you won't have many issues. The new slimline dishes are MUCH better at battling the rainfade. It has to be a raging monsoon for me to lose signal.

DTV has come a long way. Their DVRs are so much better than Comcast's. They can be networked to share programs anywhere you have a TV, have NFL Sunday Ticket (although now much value there now ), 3D programming, and the list goes on.

^Yeah I think they call it MRV Multi Room Viewing. It's like $3 a month but if you know you'll get it have them do it at install. I think it's like $30 at install and $50 later down the road. Check avsforum.com and dbstalk.com for more DirecTV info. FYI, it's called D* in those forums.

I remember going from mpeg 2 to mpeg 4 the rainfade wasn't as bad, but when we got heavy afternoon t-storms in the summer, it didn't matter.

Went to sams club, and for being a member, dtv gave me first year at 49 a month. With 1 dvr/hd, 1hd, and 2 regular boxes. No equipment fee, no installation charge, and I also get a kit to have online cinema (suppose to be like netflix). And second year for 89.

Bout right for what I got from Costco except they only gave me one HD DVR and 2 regular crap boxes, no extra HD box. I don't know if your monthly is good because I don't know which package that is? Do you have all the channels including movies except for like Spanish?

I got the Choice Extra plan. I did get for 3 months free (HBO, ShowTime, Cinema, & Starz)

I also got free equipment to have that Cinema thing (like netflix) and installed.
