Tech people: is this a good TV for the price?
Samsung - 32" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV

My friend says his boss has a hookup from his work where he gets discounts thru best buy. This says its currently selling for $950 and he says he can get it for me for $600, but the deal ends in 8 hrs so I need to let him know asap. If I'm correct, 1080p is best, right?

I think it's a good deal IF you are getting the 1080P...I didn't think that anything under 40" was 1080P....I stand to be corrected....
As for Circuit City...they are going out of business.....aren't they?

I think it is overpriced.. $1000 for a 32"... if it was Sony XBR series or Philips TV..yes.

Sony XBR series will blow anything other LCD tv away, Philips has the deepest blacks for an LCD, and Samsung, should stick to Monitors.
I cant wait for the Laser TV or maybe I'll go with OLED if they ever get cheaper.
$600 is great price, I'll tell my friend, has has been looking for a 32" LCD.

1080p is a marketing gimmick now. Let me try to find that chart to show how far you should sit to notice the picture. I think $600 is way too much to spend on a 32" HDTV. Are you putting this into your room? You planning to use this with the computer as well?

This is a good 32" set, with 3 HDMIs, and 5ms is not bad, I wonder what's contrast ratio is, but again for $600 bux it's a good deal.

BUT! Quality of your TV also depends on the color of your walls, sunlight, and over all viewers positioning....
The rule of thumbs is to measure the distance between where you will be watching TV and where the TV will be standing.. Take that distance and divide it by three, the result is your optimum diagonal for your new TV...
So at 32", you should be seating at least 96 inches away, for the best TV enjoyment (not to see the grains)

1080p works best when you are steaming blue-ray and true 1080p content, let's say via laptop HDMI... Cable/Satellie is all unconverted bullshit to 1080i

But for a 720p, I think $600 for a 32" is way too much, you can get a higher contrast low ms LCD monitor. newegg.com

Of course $600 for a 32" 7020p is expensive. For the price, you can get 42". I'm a plasma guy.

ok here's the deal. i will be using this for a tv in my bedroom, will be watching from 10 feet away. i have a regular dvd player (non blueray or hddvd) although MIGHt get one later. is the 1080p worth it in this case? or should i get 720p?

Even though Plasma will give you better blacks, and are safer nowadays against burn-ins.. I'm still afraid of them, I pause my TV a lot, or it just sits on my laptop desktop.. I'd be paranoid. But yes, for a viewing angle and blacks, Plasma wins hands down... Plus you can get a monster size Plasma =]

720p is fine, really no difference from 10 feet away. It will be another couple years before TV is broadcast in 1080p, so your only sources today are Blu-Ray and video games.

to your mother on this summation.Samsung also has a much more friendly costumer service department and will extend a warranty 3 months if you ask nicely.

And Philips, average Joe will be very happy with it as they are definitely cheaper.
Since we are on the topic, is there any good software to zoom in with? When I connect my lappy to my 52", I can't ever see my IM's text
And I don't want to lower my desktop resolution (1920x1080) on the laptop. Suggestions please.

The color of your walls has nothing to do with the quality of your TV...
It can affect how your eyes perceive the colors on your TV...but that is with any set be it cheap or top end. Same with sunlight or ambient light.For someone who "lives" on avs forums, you either retain the crappier members "knowledge" or you are purposely trying to see if BS flies on here.

There are however several LED LCD panels on the markets now. The Sammy 950 series being one example. And yes the new macs all use LED LCDs for their panels.

^ room ambiance plays an important role in the day time TV viewing experience. And I only follow advice of certified ISF members. Not all their advice is true, as some of their calibrating methods, left me hating my TV, lol.
