Tech people: is this a good TV for the price?

Samsung - 32" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1202648738906

My friend says his boss has a hookup from his work where he gets discounts thru best buy. This says its currently selling for $950 and he says he can get it for me for $600, but the deal ends in 8 hrs so I need to let him know asap. If I'm correct, 1080p is best, right?

Is it the same one Circuit City is putting on sale on Black Friday for $499.99?

I think it's a good deal IF you are getting the 1080P...I didn't think that anything under 40" was 1080P....I stand to be corrected....
As for Circuit City...they are going out of business.....aren't they?

$600 is a great price for the 550 series. I would be all over that.

Samsung? TV over the innovators? OH-K.

Sony XBR series will blow anything other LCD tv away, Philips has the deepest blacks for an LCD, and Samsung, should stick to Monitors.

I cant wait for the Laser TV or maybe I'll go with OLED if they ever get cheaper.

$600 is great price, I'll tell my friend, has has been looking for a 32" LCD.

1080p is a marketing gimmick now. Let me try to find that chart to show how far you should sit to notice the picture. I think $600 is way too much to spend on a 32" HDTV. Are you putting this into your room? You planning to use this with the computer as well?

That's what I was told too....better reliability, and quality....I think in the end is preference....
Don't forget (innovator?), Ford "invented" the car, Sony also "invented" digital cameras.....neither of them is on top anymore.....

I don't think that the deal is for everyone....this guy has the Hookup

1080p works best when you are steaming blue-ray and true 1080p content, let's say via laptop HDMI... Cable/Satellie is all unconverted bullshit to 1080i

And it is not a gimmick, but simple math. 720pixel vs 1080 pixels of width will always yield a crispier/more detailed frame.

source in 1920x1080 is the ultimate 1080p quality.

This is a good 32" set, with 3 HDMIs, and 5ms is not bad, I wonder what's contrast ratio is, but again for $600 bux it's a good deal.

OK, the graph is almost accurate...

BUT! Quality of your TV also depends on the color of your walls, sunlight, and over all viewers positioning....

The rule of thumbs is to measure the distance between where you will be watching TV and where the TV will be standing.. Take that distance and divide it by three, the result is your optimum diagonal for your new TV...

So at 32", you should be seating at least 96 inches away, for the best TV enjoyment (not to see the grains)

I believe in 1080p for screen higher than 40". But 32", might as well get 720p.

XBR Braiva features a lot of amazing add-ons and screen itself. There is a reason it cost almost double as a Samsung... TRILUMINOS® RGB LED Backlight, Motionflow™ 120Hz PRO, BRAVIA Engine™ 2 PRO, 10-bit display panel and processor, piano gloss black finish..

But then again, I've seen a Laser-TV in action, no words to describe it.

Yes, unless you are plannig on connecting it your computer... you'll regret it later.

But for a 720p, I think $600 for a 32" is way too much, you can get a higher contrast low ms LCD monitor. newegg.com

Of course $600 for a 32" 7020p is expensive. For the price, you can get 42". I'm a plasma guy.

720p is your answer. Use the money to get a 42".

Even though Plasma will give you better blacks, and are safer nowadays against burn-ins.. I'm still afraid of them, I pause my TV a lot, or it just sits on my laptop desktop.. I'd be paranoid. But yes, for a viewing angle and blacks, Plasma wins hands down... Plus you can get a monster size Plasma =]

720p is fine, really no difference from 10 feet away. It will be another couple years before TV is broadcast in 1080p, so your only sources today are Blu-Ray and video games.

The only OLED on the market right now is 11"...

And Yes Samsung are the current winners in the TV market. Even over the XBR line. Why? Price. The XBR line isnt better that a Sammy 950 for the cost. You want to talk XBRs...keep them relative to the models youre comparing.

And phillips. They dont even register on the map.

to your mother on this summation.

Samsung also has a much more friendly costumer service department and will extend a warranty 3 months if you ask nicely.

OLED are beautiful, thus macs have a huge advantage.

You are right about Samsung vs XBR in terms of comparable pricing...

And Philips, average Joe will be very happy with it as they are definitely cheaper.

Since we are on the topic, is there any good software to zoom in with? When I connect my lappy to my 52", I can't ever see my IM's text And I don't want to lower my desktop resolution (1920x1080) on the laptop. Suggestions please.

The viewing distance of your TV differs whether you are watching SD or HD content.

The color of your walls has nothing to do with the quality of your TV...It can affect how your eyes perceive the colors on your TV...but that is with any set be it cheap or top end. Same with sunlight or ambient light.

For someone who "lives" on avs forums, you either retain the crappier members "knowledge" or you are purposely trying to see if BS flies on here.

Ho do macs have an advantage with OLED?

The only OLED on the market is an 11" Sony unit.

There are however several LED LCD panels on the markets now. The Sammy 950 series being one example. And yes the new macs all use LED LCDs for their panels.

Again false.

Put a Samsung 950 series up against a Pioneer Kuro.

Identical black levels. and again the Sammy costs less.

32" 1080p is useless unless you are going to connect it to a PC through hdmi or you will be watching a ton of bluray movies. The human eye can't see 1080p from 10ft away on 32"

^ room ambiance plays an important role in the day time TV viewing experience. And I only follow advice of certified ISF members. Not all their advice is true, as some of their calibrating methods, left me hating my TV, lol.

Again Samsung 950....LED, 120hz (which only matters for sport events and video games) etc etc etc.

Comparable. And many will say better.

It also is important for nighttime viewing...but it has nothing to do with the quality of your set. Unless we are really talking about wal mart bargain LCDs.

I would love to believe the Samsung has identical black levels as the Kuro.

Just go to a magnolia or high end tv shop and see for yourself. Make sure they are both calibrated and receiving the same HD feed via the same input.
