Surround Sound not surrounding. :D

I have a Sony Surround sound receiver with 5 speakers and a sub.

If I turn on music just from the FM tuner, I can get sound on all 5 speakers.

When I switch to the television or a DVD (that yes, has 5.1 sound) I cannot for the life of me get all 5 speakers to work. Only the 2 fronts, the center and sub work.

I messed around with the settings, like going to movie PLII, Music, etc, nothing worked.

Any A/V gurus have some advice?

On the DVD player, you'll need to activate the digital output to produce the 5.1 sound.

That's easy. What about the TV? If I watch a movie on HBO or something, can I get 5.1 sound? It's just hooked up through a red/white RCA.

Thats for stereo (2 channel)

If you're Cable Box doesn't have a digital out (coax or optical) you're out of luck...
Of course you could always use PLII Music / Movie

HD boxes have them though....its really worth it

No HD TV, so that's not really an option.

I'll check it tonight. Thanks for the help.

your receiver should have sound settings like '4 way stereo' or something that clones the front speakers to the rear speakers. Try tweaking away - it's what I use for my red/white cable from the tv cable box.

Which receiver do you have (model #)? I just picked up a Sony STR-DG800 today and had a few issues setting it up before 24 started, but all is well now

It was a PITA, but most of the issues were due to my stupidity. I'm loving the HDMI switching.

Is there optical video in as well as optical audio?

On my DVD player, there is an optical audio out. On the receiver, there is an optical port, but it says video in.

Can't get the sound to come out of the DVD player.

Model of the receiver is STR-K660p

Do you have a digital coax out on the dvd player? It's usually orange. you could always hook that up to the "DVD IN Coax" just below the optical input.

Not on the DVD player downstairs. The one upstairs does.

Will it take any RCA cable or does it have to be the orange one? I don't want to search for the orange cable. lol

I think you would have to use RCA audio outs from the dvd player to the "DVD Audio IN" rca connections if all you have available are rca's.

I'm assuming that the digital coax wire is actually the same as RG-6 (like cable wire), where the rca's are simply copper wire. They both have the same "rca"-style ends, but the wire is different for the digital.

I looked up your model on sony.com and didn't see much for descriptions of audio connections other than the RCA to RCA ot the digital coax to digital coax. Seems odd that they wouldn't have an optical in for audio on the receiver.

Finally got it working. I downloaded the manual and followed the steps to reset all of the settings to default. Now Optical is one of the menu choices on the input selection.

Thanks for all of your help! I'll be watching Fearless in 5.1 tonight.
