Let the receiver do the switching?

Not quite a year ago, I invested in a pretty beefy receiver (Yamaha RX-V1800 --- Thanks Dave!!!).

Currently, the receiver takes all video and passes the raw signal to the TV. It does not do any 1080p conversion. So there's one HDMI cable running to the back of the TV. I always use my surround speakers for audio, even watching TV.

With the pending delivery of the new TV, should I just keep the same setup? Or should I utilize the three HDMI ports in the back of the TV? I am going to have to use cable management systems to hide the cables against the wall. I'm not going to tear my walls up to hide them.

Obviously, one HDMI and a power cable is the easiest route, but then I miss out on having different settings for each HDMI on the TV.

Currently, my HDMI components are 1) DTV DVR, 2) BR Player and 3) Apple TV.

I've been dealing with same dilemma. I haven't seen a receiver with more than one HDMI output, though. What would you do, run audio from each component to the receiver and HDMI from each for video to the TV? That's a lot of wires versus one HDMI from each component and then one HDMI to the TV.

Out of curiosity, are your settings for each component that different?

Exactly... HDMI directly to the TV and optical to the receiver for audio.

The only different settings I could think of would be for TV versus movies on Blu-ray. But yea, it's certainly easier spitting out one MDI from the back of the receiver and calling it a day.

Gotcha. I use the same settings for both. Or rather, I'd like to...the ideal settings for TV/BD/DVDs isn't great for games (PS3). I'm going to see if I can tweak the video settings on the games themselves to offset the BD settings to make a one-cable system work. I hate wires.

Not to get off topic, but that receiver you mentioned...it's a good one?

It's amazing.

I've owned Yamaha for a long time and contemplated going over to Denon, but I'm glad I stayed put.

If you want Dolby TrueHD audio, then the HDMI must come from your BR player to your reciever.

...just a thought.

Check to see if your TV has a "one button" solution for video settings.
Then you can still run one HDMI cable to your TV.....after selecting the source (either BR or DTV or Apple TV)...then hit the "one button" video settings that you have set-up for the source that you are watching.

You can do this all with your Harmony remote too.

I'm pretty sure the 1800 DOES have upconversion through the HDMI. Its one of the reasons I bought it. So, my wii got uprezzed

And as much of a pain in teh cock as th "HDMI handshake" can be....I say run everything to the receiver...and one HDMI cable to the TV.

That seals it... Because I do want TrueHD.

Just get all the individual source settings for your video uploaded onto your harmony remote.

So you're telling me the Harmony can retain TV settings? Never heard of that.

Dunno if it works for all TV's....it should but that gets down to the details of things.

Depending on your TV....if your TV remote has "one touch" or "presaved video settings"...have the harmony learn the button...or it may already be there when you select for TV remote use on the harmony.
