LCD vs. Plasma vs. DLP

between a flat-panel lcd, a plasma, a DLP, and a projection LCD, what are the main pro's and cons, and which TV is best for what type of setting?

For some hard facts, best bet is to google. Here's an article I got from typing in LCD vs Plasma vs DLP.... http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-10166_7-6213889-1.html . Tons more results as well.

In the end though it's going to come down to what size you want and how much you want to spend. Once you decide that you'll be able to figure out which technologies meet those criteria, then from there it comes down to personal preference...

There are too many variables to consider. It does not just depend on size or what you are watching, but also brand and how much you are willing to spend. For instance, I like plasma the most. I would take a Sony LCD, however, over a Panasonic plasma. The picture quality on the panasonic's are horrible where the Sony LCD's have the best picture of any LCD IMHO.

With all that said though, generally speaking you do have to figure out what your main use will be, and what kind of space you are willing to give up. Everyone has their tastes. The very first thing I would ask is what will you primarily use the tv for. If the answer is watching sports for instance, I would immediately rule out almost all LCD tv's. If you are just watching movies and some tv, then a LCD might be ok. It would be bright, not much glare if in a room with a lot of windows, and can have very vivid colors. So it all depends.

My suggestion would probably be a Sony Bravia. It is the only LCD I have seen that can keep up with the fast motion of sports. I have seen little to no pixelation with fast motion on these tv's. I have just never been a fan of DLP's, but if someone wanted to go really big, then I would suggest one as the cost of a 60"+ plasma would be far more then a DLP.

I'd also suggest two things-
1. Search here....we've covered this.
2. Go to www.avsforum.com if you really want some good in-depth discussion on this. Be prepared to spend a couple of hours over there though.

Good luck....

We were at bestbuy today just looking around, we saw they had 06 62" 1080P Mitsus on sale for 2300. In the store it looked much nicer in terms of picture quality than our 50 inch 720P Samsung...

So, would it be best to replace our sammy(move that to the parents room) with this mitsu, get a 720P LCD for my parents room, get a different large 1080P other than the Mitsu? Anything good in the 71"+ range?

The way I see it, is this set was not the top of hte line 1080P DLP, but its better than our 50" 720P DLP, so getting that over another 720P(37" LCD this time) would be better...

Dunno, kinda confused right now. I am thinking maybe I should research the current 1080P sets. I really like the Sony SXRDs, and also like samsungs LED based light engine, but I don't have much of a problem with the rainbow effect and I don't know if that will be worth the price.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated guys.

Mike

I'd wait. There is little to no content available in 1080P. Satellite maxes at 720P/1080i, as does cable. Broadcast can barely get 720P/1080i working with out singal pixelation during primetime.

Blueray and HD-DVD are the only place you are going to see that high of resolution at this time. It will be >= 1year before there will be enough affordable content to validate a 1080P purchase.

Unless you're in the market for a large screen set it does not make sense to buy a 1080p to replace a 720p. We have a 50" Sammy DLP (720p) as our main TV. Next year we will be in the market for another big set for our theater room. At that time I will be buying a larger 1080p set (right now it's between the Sammy 61", Mitsu 65" and the SXRD 60", but we'll wait for SXRD2 to be released). Then the 1080p set will have a PS3 and HD-DVD player connected to it, so it will take advantage of the 1080p to its fullest. The 720p DLP will remain our main TV set since cable is only 720p/1080i anyway.

However, if you are looking to buy a new TV, then yes, I'd go 1080p all the way. This way you're set for the future, and won't need to buy another TV when you decide to go HD-DVD, BluRay, or hook up that PS3. Instead you'll be all set. The prices of 1080p sets are pretty much in line with where 720p/1080i sets were when they were considered mainstream... another sign that 1080p is here to stay and why 720p is on the clearance rack.

So yeah, if you're TV shopping, go 1080p now. Otherwise, if you do not need another TV at this time you can stick with what you have b/c it's silly to replace a 720p set with an identical 1080p set unless you have one of the above mentioned technologies in your home.

The deal with us getting a TV is this. My grandparents gave my mother 1500 for a 720P LCD for their room... My father and I would rather spend another 1500 and put our 720P sammy in his room and put a the sony 60 inch SXRD downstairs.

What are the benefits of the SXRDII going to be? They are releasing this stuff faster than it makes sense to me... I HDTV going to continue on its evolution until HDTVII comes out in 30 some odd years?
