Getting a new TV, Plasma or LCD, 720 or 1080

Ok its time to upgrade my Tv in the living room (currently have a 27" CRT). We will be watching mainly HD programming and sometimes some blu ray movies. I am looking for a either 40" or 42". I really like the looks of plasmas. Now is their any concerns that come with the plasmas. I know when they first came out I was told not to let the tv stay on pause or lean it in one direction due to the gases moving to one side. Dont know how much of it is a myth vs facts.
Now with 1080p vs 720p I really cant notice a difference unless I look at the Pioneer Kuro, Sammy 950, and Sony XBR.
I currently have a 720p Sammy 32" in my bedroom and I am perfectly happy with it. Even blu ray movies look amazing on it.

I was also looking at staying under $800. Heres some TVs I have researched online and also went to CC and BB to look at.

http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-Vier...2325873&sr=1-1

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-PN42A4...2325873&sr=1-2

http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-40RV52...2326413&sr=1-1

This last one is actually a 1080p and Compusa usually has it marked down to $699.

I have pretty much seen all 3 tvs under $750 and local retailers.

Thanks all.

You won't notice a difference between 720p and 1080p on most tvs under 50". Stick with 720p. As for brands, that's a personal preference.

How about the Sammy 40" 550. Its a lil more, but I see all these place are offering no interest for one year, so that makes the deal a lil sweeter.

Get the Panny plasma. I've had a 50 inch Panny plasma for over 4 years and people still compliment the picture. I've had several wives comment to their husbands asking why they did not get what we have. They all have LCDs

Also- +1 on not worrying about the 720 on something below 50 inches- unless you're sitting 4 feet from it!

Get the 40A550. I just bought a 32" Samsung 450 for $577 free shipping no taxes.

If you aren't completely set on your budget and can spend just a little more, this TV is awesome.

LN40A550

Samsung (the best right now IMO with maybe the expection of KURO plasmas)
1080p
40"
LCD
~$900 from Amazon

Probably about the best TV you can get if you are willing and able to spend just a little more.

You said you can't tell any difference between 1080 and 720, but my guess is that you were in some big box store looking at these. More often than not (at least around here) they are hardly ever playing anything on HD...ever. I'm no expert, but my guess is 1080p would make a difference by the time you got to the 40-42 inch range.

I got that first one, the Panasonic a couple weeks before Christmas. I got it for $699 from BB off of a price match from Sears. I love it in conjunction with the PS3 and we just got our HD cable box a couple days ago. Great tv, my only complaint is the volume settings. It's one of those things where you have to keep turning it up for low talking parts and then turn it down for action sequences. My solution to that was buying a home theatre system! Oh and I cant even tell the difference in picture quality when compared to my buddy's 46" Sony Bravia 1080p.

How far will you be from the tv? That's the first time I've heard of 1080 being an issue on the 40-42" range. But then again I don't think under $800 you'll find a lot of TV except for the Toshiba listed.

I bought a Samsung DLP about a year ago and I love it. I looked at a lot of TV's and it came down to the Sammy and Sony and I chose the Sammy. I got it for over $800 off of retail on a new year's sale.

Reason why I go plasma. Better PQ imho, better refresh rate too. Everyone has their own opinions on it, i just wanted to point out that you can get a faster refresh rate then what everyone seems to think is the "best" out there.

Yeah, plasmas are typically faster. It's the big reason for the past few years why people recommend plasma if you watch sports.

Less ghosting I presume and no bleeding. I remember my first LCD had issues with that.

Just out of curiousity how did you notice it? Was the PQ not up to snuff because of the resolution or could other factors be involved?

I have a 32" sammy in my bedroom. It went 100 bucks cheaper. Called up sears for the adjustment and they said just come in with reciept. Long story short I returned the 32 and ordered the ln550 40" for 899.99
