Computer Advice

Well im planning on building a new computer and need some help. I couldnt think of any other place to post this so please move if not right. I have so far ordered a cool master case, 1.5tb hd and evga p55 ftw mother board. I plan on ordering a intel i5 750 processor. I dont know which ram and how much i should go for and which video card, tuner and cpu cooler. I have never overclocked a comp before but plan on doing it this time around so would really appreciate it if someone with lots of knowledge in this area chime in. Thanks

Why in the world do you feel like you need to overclock? Do you plan to overclock the CPU or the RAM?

If you don't know what components to buy, you probably should leave the timing settings and CPU clock alone.

Ram and cpu. Reason i wanna overclock is to get the full power out of them. I know what cpu i want and i know the mobo is capable. I plan on getting G skillz or ocz ram. I have a pc i put together in 03 and its running windows 7 currently with only 3gb ram without a problem. This time i wanna oc so i can take full advantage. I dont understand the different betweenin running 32 bit or 64 bit. If i do a 32 bit im going to run 4gb ram but if i go 64 bit i wanna run 16 gb but that all depends on what difference it makes over all. Ive heard if oc a cpu and not have enough cooling power its bad for it and reduces the overall life of it. Im just confused on what to do and which set up to run. I finally settled on the ftw mobo. Processor is Intel i5 750 for sure. Just need help on picking ram, vid card, power supply watts, and tv tuner.

You don't know the difference between 32 and 64 bit, but you want to overclock? Hmmm.

Don't take this the wrong way, but it sounds like you want to overclock because you're a penny-pinching bastard.

Why do you wanna overclock? Its better off you buy a processor of the speed you want and have that extra headroom than maxing out a component...And besides most CPUs nowadays are more than capable of running almost any programs.

The i5 is rated 2.66ghz and is capable of pushing 4.0ghz. So why not? Im spending about 1200 bucks cus im pinching pennys? lol. Instead of making fun, why not help me? The reason i posted here was to get your opinions. As much as i appreciate that i would also like to be given a little more info you have.

Not a fan of dell. I prefer barebones to big companies. I have tried dell and sony and they didnt seem to last that long. Plus ive got half the things ordered so no backing out now lol.

why are u guys busting his balls about wanting to overclock his system it's a great way to learn about pc's and wrench the full processing power out of the cpu. the cpu's that are sold at the higher and lower clocks are all manufactured out of the same batches so the ones that are sold at lower clocks are capable of running at higher clocks. you just have to overclock it a little at a time to see what the threshold is.

harminder, you'd be better off on hardforum dot com.

Ill give it a shot, thanks. Dont tell me you guys never tried anything new? How will you learn if you never try? When you mod a car for the frist time why do you do it? Why do people do things? Get a thrill out right? Same thing here. Always a first for everything. If i had never tried something new id be missing out on a whole ##it load of stuff.

I don't have any experience with GSkill or OCZ ram. I'd recommend getting one of the dual channel Corsair XMS3 kits. You can get a 2x2GB kit for less than $100. I wouldn't get the 4x2GB set because its cheaper to buy two of the 2x2GB kits.

Power supply should be alright. I like the Corsair TX series because they're single rail design means you don't have to worry about balancing if you're close to the top end of the capabilities of the supply.

Before choosing a video card, I'd check my budget. That's where it really starts to get expensive. Come back with a video card budget and we should be able to recommend something. You can get a half decent one starting at about $150 or so, but they'll go all the way up past $500 depending on what you want.

If you're going to OC your chip and ram, cooling is a huge concern. I can't stress this enough. If your chip isn't properly cooled, it won't run stable. And worse yet, you might damage the chip or mobo. Get a good aftermarket CPU cooler. Check reviews, do your research there. Case cooling will come into play too. You'll need to create good airflow inside the case for the cpu cooler to work effectively.

Building a PC can be fun. I enjoy building my own and upgrading my own. I've never messed with overclocking, but I've got a set up more than capable of it and it was a something I looked at when choosing components. I just haven't seen a need for it yet. Don't let the "Buy a Dell" comments get to you. Have fun, learn your lessons, just be careful that you don't damage anything. Could be very expensive lessons

OC'ing is all about cooling! Make sure your case has plenty of air flow, populate it with all of the fans that it has space for, and for the love of god don't skimp on the CPU cooler. Read reviews and do your research, but most people run one of the Zalman coolers. And if you're really adventurous go for liquid cooling.

There are all kinds of sites and forums dedicated to overclocking. Just do some searching and go into it fully armed before you make an expensive mistake.

Thats the cpu cooler i was looking at to get. Video card, i really dont know if its smart for me to spend a whole lot on it. Im not a major gamer. All i use my pc for really is watching movies once in a while and listening to music, tv and surfing the net. A friend of mines told me its a waste to spend extra on a vid card since i dont game. Personally i would not wanna spend more then 150 on vid card. The case i have is thsi one

If you're not gaming, there's honestly not a lot of use in OC'ing your machine. For what you mentioned in your last post, you wouldn't notice any difference between an i5 and C2D. I understand wanting to do it for the sake of doing it. I do crap all the time just because I can and I want to learn about it.

Case looks like it'll be an interesting one to cool. With the wide open side it won't be easy to establish air flow. It does have a lot of fans though. I'd probably have that top fan blowing out rather pulling air in. That way you're getting cooler air from below the CPU and blowing the heat out the top as hot air naturally rises. I'd probably have the front and rear fans pulling air in as well.

As far as video card, in the $150 range you could get an nVidia GTX260. I've been running one for a while and it does alright. And, as an added bonus, if you change your motherboard selection to one with an nVidia chipset (I've got an Asus M3N HT Deluxe 780a board) you can use the Hybrid power feature. It'll turn off the external video card and just use the onboard one when its not needed. The advantage there is that while you're listening to music or watching a movie or surfing the net, the video card is turned off. Its not generating any heat and not using power.

For movies, music, and surfing the 'net, your plans are probably a little over the top (but bigger/faster is always better, right?).

That heatsink looks huge! Make sure the case is big enough to accomodate it.

Case looks alright. I would start with using the front fan as intake, top fan exhaust, rear fan exhaust, orient the CPU fan to blow front to rear, and it looks to me like the side panel has mounts for a 120mm or 200mm fan - if so buy an extra fan and use it as an exhaust. Then monitor your temperatures and tweak the configurations until you get the best results.

Your case is going to be pretty loud...

Also, take a look at Lian Li cases. I build all of my own computers, and will never build without a Lian Li case.

if you are surfing the net, something simpler and cheaper will be fine. No need to overclock the processor, no need for 16 GB's of ram.

I still do heavy photo editing, web surfing, work projects/objectives on my computer and it's proably horrible compared to what you are trying to get in a pc.

Specs:
Windows XP Service Pack 2
2 GB Ram
60 GB Hard Drive (I need to use an external, a lot)
1.73 Ghz Intel Centrino
128 MB ATI Graphics Card

No fancy water cooling or anything of the sort. No overclocking or any performance pushing either. Granted it takes about 3 minutes for a complex algorithm (one that uses nearly 1.3 GB's of ram to compute) to take place in Photoshop, it still gets the job done without a hiccup.

I'd say to spend around 600 on your stuff and save up your money for something useful...

I wouldn't even try to get 16GB at this point. Its going to cost you at least $200 for 8GB of decent name brand memory. 16 will probably cost you at least 4 times that, if not more. You'll blow almost your entire budget on RAM. The prices will eventually go down, you'll just have to wait. Just get some 2GB sticks for now.

I was planning on getting only one stick of 4gb and picking up more as i go. I guess ill stick to the 2gb sticks then. Ive built a computer before for myself and 2 for my uncle but i never went into detail. This time im going into detail so i learn something new atleast. Whats the deal with the pc12800 on the ram? I know they have a speed reference also in mhz but i cant seem to find any info on that. I go out looking for one thing and find something else that pulls me towards it more lol
