DreamWorks Animation said yesterday it still had an exclusive deal with Toshiba to distribute its movies on HD DVD, and until Toshiba gave it the go-ahead, it would not begin offering movies in Blu-ray reports Beta News.
DreamWorks' and Paramount's exclusivity with HD DVD was scheduled to last until February 2009, and violating that agreement -- even with Toshiba ending production of HD DVD players -- could affect any payment the studios were slated to receive.
DreamWorks will be releasing "Bee Movie" in March on HD DVD.

UPDATE 6:45pm: We've received word from Paramount that DreamWorks Animation will also follow its studio parent and end HD DVD support. DreamWorks Animation sole remaining HD DVD release, 'Bee Movie' (originally scheduled for March 11) has been cancelled. We've updated our database accordingly.

HDDVD was a better format and had more special features then Blu-Ray plus Blu-ray confuses people. HDDVD makes sense Blu-Ray...the fuck is that? Either way HD discs are not catching on like DVD's did and truthfully I have an HD tv but DVD vs HD discs don't amaze me enough to switch over.

I understand that since Toshiba won't be making any more hardware, the customer base for HD DVD movies can't expand. However, I think it's stupid of Paramount to cancel releases so soon. There is still over a million people who might buy. Cancel the movies no one would buy, but still release the 'big movies' that people would buy.
Two shitty movies, great. Are you telling me that things like Bee Movie weren't already ready to go considering it's release date is 2 weeks away? And form what I understand, it wouldn't be until sometime this summer that Paramount is releasing new movies on Blu-Ray.

It makes perfect sense for the studios to continue producing HD-DVD for a little while. People are still buying them.
They can sell a whole bunch of HD-DVD's and in a few months release the Blu-ray version and probably sell all over again to some percentage of the same people.

Maybe it's all a conspriacy to try and get you to buy Blu Ray Player if you are an HD DVD adopter. Not going to work on me. I'll just rent the SD version from netflix. I was only going to buy it because I would rather see it in HD...I haven't seen these movies in the theater so I might not like them at all.

Universal has confirmed that it will close the curtain on its HD DVD support with this month's release of 'Atonement.'
Although the studio has yet to issue a formal statement, when asked to comment on reports that it had pulled its planned Spring HD DVD release of 'Charlie Wilson's War,' a Universal rep confirmed to High-Def Digest that the studio will no longer issue new titles on the format following the March 18 HD DVD debut of 'Atonement.'
As we've previously reported, the studio waited only hours after Toshiba pulled the plug on HD DVD to announce its own intention to make the move to Blu-ray (at press time, Universal had yet to reveal plans for their first Blu-ray titles).

Now, however, those rumors actually have some legs -- well, at least a leg. According to Stan Glasgow, Sony Electronics US president, "Sony is in talks with console rival Microsoft about offering a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360." For whatever it's worth, the exec also noted that it was having similar discussions with Apple, which has yet to even offer a Blu-ray option on any of its machines. Unfortunately, not a peep was uttered about potential launch dates and the like, but you can rest assured that we'll be keeping an ear dangerously close to the ground.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg has rejected recent speculation that the company was looking into adding a Blu-ray peripheral to its console following the demise of HD DVD.
Instead the corporation would continue to invest in digital distribution via the Xbox Live service, he told Reuters.
"Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience," he said. "We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content."
The HD DVD attachment for the Xbox 360 is no longer in production following Toshiba's withdrawal from the next-generation race.
The news comes just one week after Microsoft's chief executive, Steve Ballmer, told the Mix08 conference that the company was in talks over possible moves for supporting Blu-ray in Windows.
"We've already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like, and I think the world moves on," he said then.
"Toshiba has moved on. We've moved on, and we'll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense," he added, statements which led many to believe that a peripheral similar to the Xbox 360's HD DVD drive could be released later in the year.
However, Greenberg's comments appear to clarify Ballmer's original statements as focusing purely on the Windows environment.
Xbox Live Video Store is Microsoft's bid to distance itself from the need for physical media by offering titles for rental via download, and the company's head of Xbox gaming and entertainment in the UK, Stephen McGill, told GamesIndustry.biz at the launch of the service last year that it was about customer choice.
"For the Xbox 360, from design all the way upwards, it's about consumer choice, what the consumer wants to do," he said last December. "Some will want to do it differently, about personalisation, the user interface, and how they access entertainment."
"HDTVs are phenomenally well-priced at the moment, and a lot will sell over Christmas, so we'll see many more people jumping in the high definition world.
"But then some people don't want to go out and buy a disc or anything, so download rental is more their cup of tea. So it's about choice, whatever you want to do, however you want to get your content."
Meanwhile Sony's PlayStation 3 has jumped in popularity following a price cut last year, and its victory in the Blu-ray stakes could lead to a further 10 per cent jump in sales, according to Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter.
This week Microsoft confirmed a price cut for the Xbox 360 in response to Sony's recent upturn in sales, making the Arcade model cheaper than the Nintendo Wii.

You should've waited for the Panasonic BD50K player. It will decode all of the advanced audio codecs, including Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio. More than likely it will be around $100-$150 more than the PS3, but if you're looking for the best, then waiting would've been the best.

I havent seen many of the blueray discs yet. How many movies out there actually put their sound in those forms? I love DTS, but out of all the dvd's I have, only like 5% actually have it. All the others are DD.
Not too concerined about it. The Spiderman 3 that came with it looked and sounded fantastic.

I was looking to buy a PS3 as well for blu-ray alone. I don't need another game system since more than 90% of the games I want/own are on Xbox 360.
Hopefully, I'll buy this new panasonic without breaking the bank.

Oppo fans left on the HD format sidelines can rejoice, as word comes that the company will add a Blu-ray player to its well-received line of DVD upscalers. According to the VP of product development, the company is "very early" in their development cycle, and we should expect more details sometime this summer. While sooner would definitely be better than later, we can't argue with a timeline that leads us to expect nothing less than a fully featured BD Live compatible player from a company with a reputation for delivering more bang for the buck.
