Dreamworks Holding Onto HD-DVD

DreamWorks Animation said yesterday it still had an exclusive deal with Toshiba to distribute its movies on HD DVD, and until Toshiba gave it the go-ahead, it would not begin offering movies in Blu-ray reports Beta News.

DreamWorks' and Paramount's exclusivity with HD DVD was scheduled to last until February 2009, and violating that agreement -- even with Toshiba ending production of HD DVD players -- could affect any payment the studios were slated to receive.

DreamWorks will be releasing "Bee Movie" in March on HD DVD.

I'm feverish...so, this is the analogy that came to my head: Paramount staying with HD-DVD is like that last gasp effort from Aragorn to push back those darned Orcs in Two Towers to wait for Gandalf.

Except. Gandalf's not coming this time.

The orcs have taken over.

UPDATE 6:45pm: We've received word from Paramount that DreamWorks Animation will also follow its studio parent and end HD DVD support. DreamWorks Animation sole remaining HD DVD release, 'Bee Movie' (originally scheduled for March 11) has been cancelled. We've updated our database accordingly.

Still sad
HDDVD was a better format and had more special features then Blu-Ray plus Blu-ray confuses people. HDDVD makes sense Blu-Ray...the fuck is that? Either way HD discs are not catching on like DVD's did and truthfully I have an HD tv but DVD vs HD discs don't amaze me enough to switch over.
Too Bad though

I understand that since Toshiba won't be making any more hardware, the customer base for HD DVD movies can't expand. However, I think it's stupid of Paramount to cancel releases so soon. There is still over a million people who might buy. Cancel the movies no one would buy, but still release the 'big movies' that people would buy.

Paramount says 'Into the Wild' and 'Things We Lost in the Fire' will be its last two HD DVD releases.
Two shitty movies, great. Are you telling me that things like Bee Movie weren't already ready to go considering it's release date is 2 weeks away? And form what I understand, it wouldn't be until sometime this summer that Paramount is releasing new movies on Blu-Ray.

March 11: Bee Movie
March 25: 'The Jack Ryan Collection,' 'The Kite Runner'
April 1: 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' (I would have bought)
April 15: 'There Will Be Blood ' (I would have bought)

It makes perfect sense for the studios to continue producing HD-DVD for a little while. People are still buying them.

They can sell a whole bunch of HD-DVD's and in a few months release the Blu-ray version and probably sell all over again to some percentage of the same people.

Maybe it's all a conspriacy to try and get you to buy Blu Ray Player if you are an HD DVD adopter. Not going to work on me. I'll just rent the SD version from netflix. I was only going to buy it because I would rather see it in HD...I haven't seen these movies in the theater so I might not like them at all.

(conspiracy) Was it the decision of Paramount or the BDA making that part of the agreement they could come back?

Post Paramount done with HD DVD next week

Just some blurbage...

FEB. 28 | The March 4 releases Into the Wild and Things We Lost in the Fire will be Paramount Home Entertainment’s last titles in the HD DVD format, the studio confirmed.

The studio pulled the plug on the HD DVD versions of other titles that had been announced for the format, including DreamWorks Animation’s Bee Movie, due March 11, and Sweeney Todd, due April 1. Their standard DVD versions will come out as planned.

Paramount also has slated There Will Be Blood, starring Oscar-winning Daniel Day-Lewis, for standard DVD release on April 8. Online retail sites last week also listed the title as available in HD DVD, but that information has since been taken down.

The studio has not yet said what its first Blu-ray Disc releases will be.

Paramount last week said it would stop producing titles in HD DVD and switch to Blu-ray, after Toshiba announced its decision to stop marketing HD DVD hardware.

Earlier this week, DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg appeared committed to HD DVD, saying that what the studio would do about Bee Movie was Toshiba’s call. “We have a partnership with Toshiba and have an obligation to see this through,” he said.

Universal has confirmed that it will close the curtain on its HD DVD support with this month's release of 'Atonement.'

Although the studio has yet to issue a formal statement, when asked to comment on reports that it had pulled its planned Spring HD DVD release of 'Charlie Wilson's War,' a Universal rep confirmed to High-Def Digest that the studio will no longer issue new titles on the format following the March 18 HD DVD debut of 'Atonement.'

As we've previously reported, the studio waited only hours after Toshiba pulled the plug on HD DVD to announce its own intention to make the move to Blu-ray (at press time, Universal had yet to reveal plans for their first Blu-ray titles).

Today's confirmation from Universal leaves the studio with only one HD DVD title awaiting release prior to 'Atonement,' the March 11th debut of 'Fletch'

Universal's news follows Paramount/DreamWorks' announcement last week that they will end their HD DVD support with this week's releases of 'Into the Wild' and 'Things We Lost in the Fire.' This now leaves Warner as the last major studio still releasing HD DVD titles beyond this month (the studio has previously said that it will honor its pledge to continue dual-format releases through the end of May).

Needless to say, we'll keep you posted on further details of Universal's transition to Blu-ray as they're announced.

Sony "in talks" with Microsoft about a Xbox 360 Blu-ray drive

Posted Mar 6th 2008 3:55PM by Darren Murph

About 48 milliseconds after the format war was officially over, rumors started running rampant (again) about Blu-ray making its way over to Microsoft's latest console. Now, however, those rumors actually have some legs -- well, at least a leg. According to Stan Glasgow, Sony Electronics US president, "Sony is in talks with console rival Microsoft about offering a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360." For whatever it's worth, the exec also noted that it was having similar discussions with Apple, which has yet to even offer a Blu-ray option on any of its machines. Unfortunately, not a peep was uttered about potential launch dates and the like, but you can rest assured that we'll be keeping an ear dangerously close to the ground.

Microsoft's Steve Ballmer talks Blu-ray support

by Scott Jon Siegel Mar 7th 2008 12:30PM

At Microsoft's Mix 08 Internet Conference in Las Vegas, company CEO Steve "Monkey Boy" Ballmer took a moment during his hour-long session to address Microsoft's official stance on Blu-ray, following the death of HD-DVD.

According to Ballmer, Microsoft plans to support Blu-ray in "ways that make sense." The company is already working on Windows device drivers, and with Sony in talks with Microsoft about the possibility of building a Blu-ray add-on for the 360, it's only a matter of time before Ballmer's dancing around and chanting "Blu-ray! Blu-ray! Blu-ray!"

how would fanboys on either side handle the hypothetical situation of a PS360? Their collective angst could cause a black hole to open up and swallow the universe

Blu-ray player prices rise

Nothing like a little price gauging to celebrate a victory.

Anyone seen the new I AM LEGEND commercial on TV? At the end they show a SD-DVD HD-DVD and BluRay

They say buy it on Blu-Ray and then it cuts and stutters and says "DV DVD" to replace the HD DVD hilarious

Microsoft rejects Xbox 360 Blu-ray idea

Phil Elliott 08:57 (BST) 13/03/2008

Aaron Greenberg scotches speculation that an attachment is in the works

Microsoft's Xbox 360 group product manager Aaron Greenberg has rejected recent speculation that the company was looking into adding a Blu-ray peripheral to its console following the demise of HD DVD.

Instead the corporation would continue to invest in digital distribution via the Xbox Live service, he told Reuters.

"Xbox is not currently in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association to integrate Blu-ray into the Xbox experience," he said. "We're the only console offering digital distribution of entertainment content."

The HD DVD attachment for the Xbox 360 is no longer in production following Toshiba's withdrawal from the next-generation race.

The news comes just one week after Microsoft's chief executive, Steve Ballmer, told the Mix08 conference that the company was in talks over possible moves for supporting Blu-ray in Windows.

"We've already been working on, for example, in Windows, device driver support for Blu-ray drives and the like, and I think the world moves on," he said then.

"Toshiba has moved on. We've moved on, and we'll support Blu-ray in ways that make sense," he added, statements which led many to believe that a peripheral similar to the Xbox 360's HD DVD drive could be released later in the year.

However, Greenberg's comments appear to clarify Ballmer's original statements as focusing purely on the Windows environment.

Xbox Live Video Store is Microsoft's bid to distance itself from the need for physical media by offering titles for rental via download, and the company's head of Xbox gaming and entertainment in the UK, Stephen McGill, told GamesIndustry.biz at the launch of the service last year that it was about customer choice.

"For the Xbox 360, from design all the way upwards, it's about consumer choice, what the consumer wants to do," he said last December. "Some will want to do it differently, about personalisation, the user interface, and how they access entertainment."

"HDTVs are phenomenally well-priced at the moment, and a lot will sell over Christmas, so we'll see many more people jumping in the high definition world.

"But then some people don't want to go out and buy a disc or anything, so download rental is more their cup of tea. So it's about choice, whatever you want to do, however you want to get your content."

Meanwhile Sony's PlayStation 3 has jumped in popularity following a price cut last year, and its victory in the Blu-ray stakes could lead to a further 10 per cent jump in sales, according to Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter.

This week Microsoft confirmed a price cut for the Xbox 360 in response to Sony's recent upturn in sales, making the Arcade model cheaper than the Nintendo Wii.

I got mine at BB, so this is cool...

When a line of consumer electronics is curtailed, it’s often the retailer that gets the blame for pushing that “piece of junk” in the first place.

Now that the HD DVD format has gone belly up, stranding consumers with a defunct technology, Best Buy wants to make sure that that doesn’t happen to them. To assuage the feelings of the 200,000 customers who purchased HD DVD hardware or drives from a Best Buy store, the company will announce Wednesday that it is giving each buyer a $50 gift card to spend on whatever they want.

Best Buy’s move follows a similar, but less public, step from Circuit City. Earlier this month, Circuit City began to quietly take back HD DVD players, even if used, granting store credit for the full purchase price. The only caveats: returns must be made within 90 days of purchase. And you have to ask for it or learn about the action on the store’s Web site.

The Best Buy cards, which will not expire, will be sent automatically to most customers who purchased HD DVD hardware by February 23, when Toshiba announced that it was abandoning the format. Best Buy’s list includes those who belong to their rewards program, bought extended warranties, or purchased the machine on its Web site. Others need to show proof of purchase to get their cards.

If you don’t want to keep your HD DVD machine to use as a standard DVD player, the company will even buy it back via its Web site, www.bestbuytradein.com. In that case, customers can double-dip, getting a second gift card for the sale. (No trade-in prices have yet been established, said a company spokesman).

It looks like you where waiting for the winner. I take it you didn't buy the PS3 for games.

You should've waited for the Panasonic BD50K player. It will decode all of the advanced audio codecs, including Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio. More than likely it will be around $100-$150 more than the PS3, but if you're looking for the best, then waiting would've been the best.

No, I wanted to use it for playing as well. I was only going to buy when GT5 came out, this just accelerated the process.

I havent seen many of the blueray discs yet. How many movies out there actually put their sound in those forms? I love DTS, but out of all the dvd's I have, only like 5% actually have it. All the others are DD.

Not too concerined about it. The Spiderman 3 that came with it looked and sounded fantastic.

I was looking to buy a PS3 as well for blu-ray alone. I don't need another game system since more than 90% of the games I want/own are on Xbox 360.

Hopefully, I'll buy this new panasonic without breaking the bank.

If it's anything like their upscaling DVD players, it should be very nice and a great price.

Oppo fans left on the HD format sidelines can rejoice, as word comes that the company will add a Blu-ray player to its well-received line of DVD upscalers. According to the VP of product development, the company is "very early" in their development cycle, and we should expect more details sometime this summer. While sooner would definitely be better than later, we can't argue with a timeline that leads us to expect nothing less than a fully featured BD Live compatible player from a company with a reputation for delivering more bang for the buck.
