Blu-Ray vs. HD DVD?
The question now is: Wait for a good profile 2.0 player to come out (yes, I'm one of those weirdos who actually enjoys bonus features), or get a PS3?
I'm not a game player at all - The only thing I play on my xbox 360 is rock band. :P

Here's some comparison shots of video from Blu-ray, Apple TV, DVD, and HD Cable...

A couple of things I thought worthy of mentioning...
We don't know the quality of the cable signal... SNR (signal to noise ratio) or BEC error correction blocks. Both of which could effect the outcome of the cable video quality.
We don't know the bit rate/compression levels of the MPEG-2 cable stream
The compression levels they were using was crushing the color gamut. Color was way off. It also dropped detail level a ton.
I'd like to see a comparison with another cable provider and known signal levels.
...
Cable aside it's a good comparison for Apple TV and Bluray. I was sort of impressed at the AppleTV quality. It's in between DVD resolution and HD.

I'm somewhat surprised at the AppleTV too, I really didn't expect iTunes HD and it's crappy bitrates to surpass DVD quality. I imagine the cable HD was HD on demand, which I always find to be awful looking compared to broadcast HD.

I for one will continue to buy new HD DVD movies that get released. I have about 10 discs so far and I'm waiting for my 5 free to show up one day. I don't see anything else worth purchasing with what is currently released. But there are a few ones coming out that I am planning to pick on on HD DVD:
American Gangster
I am Legend
Beowulf (maybe)
Sweeney Todd (april)
If they released some of their older stuff (which isn't out already), I'd prob buy that too.
HD DVD my die soon, but I won't be getting a blu-ray player anytime soon. Too expensive, and not profile 2.0. I also like the additional features that HD DVD has now and blu-ray does not (until 2.0 comes out). And don't tell me how 'Sony promised that PS3 will be 2.0'. I'll believe it when I see it. Did I mention earlier that I hate Sony?

see some fancy feature on the box, and they'll want to look at it.
Profile 1.0 to 1.1 already sucked, but people buying Profile 1.0 players
were the 'first gen guinea pigs' who are kind of used to this. But now that
there is a big blu-ray push, I think you have more J6P buying players, and
they are certainly going to be expecting this. Explaining the difference
between upconverted DVD and Blu-ray to people can be annoying enough,
not to mention now throwing a profile version into it.
And besides, Is there any guarantee that Profile 2.0 is the last one?
There's not going to be some stupid Profile 3.0 down the road, is there?
*sigh*
I found some other comparison shots of HD-DVD vs AppleTV 2.0 taken on a Kuro Plasma...

What's sorta disconcerting is you can see the detail differences even on low-res photos... It's not like we have some 12Mp camera shots to compare.
So it's another HD lite product
Although looking at the last pics it does seem to keep up on low motion video OK.

That went well for them.

The Hollywood Reporter is citing "reliable industry sources" as saying that Toshiba is on the verge of officially dropping its HD DVD format.
Though Toshiba denies that any such decision has been made, the just-published article in The Reporter points to "substantial" losses from each HD DVD player sold and a series of high-profile defections as key motivators for the company, with one unnamed source close to the HD DVD camp telling the Reporter that "an announcement is coming soon... it could be a matter of weeks."

Wal-Mart To Exclusively Support Blu-ray
Posted February 15, 2008 by Josh
Blu-ray Disc Wal-Mart has confirmed with Blu-ray.com that beginning in June the world's largest retailer will only stock Blu-ray players and movies. Over the next few months, they will phase out all HD DVD products and reorganize their stores to focus on Blu-ray. This move comes days after similar statements of support for Blu-ray by Internet movie rental site Netflix and retailer Best Buy.
Gary Severson, senior vice president, Home Entertainment, Wal-Mart, U.S. commented, "We've listened to our customers, who are showing a clear preference toward Blu-ray products and movies with their purchases. With the customers best interest in all we do, we wanted to share our decision and timeline with them as soon as possible, knowing it will help simplify their purchase decision, increase selection, and increase adoption long term. We anticipate enhancing our selection with continued great values in hi-definition Blu-ray products, so our customers can further enhance their entertainment experience at home."
This is just the latest in a series of shifts towards either Blu-ray support or exclusivity since Warner Brothers announced in January that they would go Blu-ray exclusive in June.
Earlier today, sources reported that Toshiba would soon be announcing that they would drop support for HD DVD. No official statement has come from them, but without support from retailers, it will probably come sooner than later.

Given that both look pretty much the same quality-wise, I guess what this ultimately says is that in this day and age, it's not cost-effective for two such formats to co-exist. If we could find any reason to go either way, I would say the storage capacity of BD (50GB) is the biggest advantage. The triple layer possibility of HD-DVD is pretty far-fetched.
