Serious question.

I wonder how much my laserdisc player and movie collection go for on craiglist? like $250 for everything or is that even a stretch

Its at the in-laws house collecting dust.

Blu-Ray wins. So... does this mean no more price drop any more from now on?

Assuming you're referring to Blu-Ray, you could argue the opposite will happen. Companies will now feel comfortable throwing their normal allotment of resources into product design and manufacturing with the resulting "economy of scale" cost reductions. I don't see that impacting store prices all that quickly though.

ha I have a Pioneer (bought used) and about 10 music LD's in mint condition... never bought any movies. Personally I think LD's were awesome. There was something magical about it.

Blu-ray still has to overtake DVD, so I'd say prices will have to drop some, just not as aggressively as they have been.

You were one of those guys going while holding up your copy of Pink Floyd's Pulse weren't you? Actually, I shouldn't even joke about it like that. For all the bitching I did about Pulse only being on LD, I still have yet to purchase it on DVD.

For those that haven't yet seen what Silver posted over in the gaming forum:

https://acurazine.com/forums/console-computer-gaming-13/will-microsoft-partner-netflix-385200/

So would this or wouldn't this give Microsoft more incentive to offer a Blu-Ray drive for the 360? I could see arguments both ways.

ohh i had no idea about the later model laserdisc players, i remember the first LD player my dad got we had to manually eject the disc and flip it to the other side, then the next LD player we got had the auto switching where the laser itself switched sides, but it still took a while. after that we got a fancy LD & DVD player i think around 1998 to which we still use on our CRT tv, but that didnt have the 2 lasers either.

Both of those are stupid stories/headlines.
Toshiba is just pouting - Blu-ray is the future, are they really going to not try to make money off it? I doubt it.

And as far as HD-DVD studios going to Blu-ray now - well, DUH, since their only
other option is to not sell any hi-def disks.

Haha, true true... Funny thing though, is that Betamax still rules in any news room...

It never went away quietly, it just stayed in the professional realm, and didn't get the consumer market penetration of VHS.

Kinda.

Betamax was the consumer format.

Betacam was the pro-format that was very ENG dominant for years. The two you may still find today are Betacam SP and DigiBeta.

They are dinosaurs and relics at this point, and I usually laugh when I am somewhere I see people with these cameras.

Oh, now I learned something! Thanks

When news crews do live remotes, what media do they store the video on for upload from the van?

Pretty sure its still majority tape. I'll actually go ahead and say yes, majority is still tape based.

Unless the particular affiliate is shooting Panasonic P2, then its SSD cards.

Or if you're in NY they have become big adopters of Sony XDCam (BR Disc cartridge based cameras)

I made a comment about that in their forum and got so much shit for it (i knew i would)

I really think the people at the bits got too big for their britches. They think too highly of themselves and their opinions.

His opinions were definitely over the top, but he does get some good inside info and I like the reviewers.

It's about time this war end. Now the question is, how the heck do they market this to the consumer that dont know anything..."Blu-ray looks the same as DVDs". DVDs were adopted so quickly by consumer; it was something that you just had to get. The HD war and all the confusion that came with it; I wouldnt be surprise if there's another format that pop out of the blue. If only there werent software/hardware limitation on playback with HTPC, I would go all out digital. I'm hoping Sony doesnt jack up the prices all the sudden.

Too bad Blu Ray didn't have the name "HD DVD". The pro is that you know what it is because the name's self explanatory. Ask an older person what a DVD is, then ask them what a Blu Ray is and they'll be like huh. However the con would be that "HD DVD is the same shit as DVD, why should I upgrade." Blu Ray being a totally different name might make the consumer think it's extra special.

Speaking about Sony's world domination attempt, they also announced yesterday pushing OLED displays even more. We might see an OLED vs Plasma vs LCD thread in a year or two.

ask an old person what HD is and they probably don't know!

If someone is considering High Definition players.........they will know what blu-ray is

Quick Reply: Blu-Ray vs. HD DVD?
