Whole house fans
If you're thinking about doing one, Grainger is having a nice clearance sale on some highly rated fans.
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/who...Grainger&xi=xi
Ordered this one: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/AIR...375?Pid=search
If you are ordering I highly recommend a belt driven one. They are much quieter than direct drive.
Has to be shipped from CA but shipping was less than $50.
And no, you do not need to be a business to order from them, despite what you may have heard.

Obviously depends on what's on that circuit.
I ran a new 20 amp circuit to the attic when I did ceiling fans in my kid's rooms.
I put the junction box in place when I did them knowing we were putting in the whole house fan.
This one draws less than 7 amps on high. I have 3 ceiling fans on that circuit and nothing else.

Yeah, that will definitely handle it.
When I was wiring houses, we would always run dedicated circuits to all microwaves, refrigerators, etc even though other things could easily be combined with it and run fine.
Just not sure how code would classify this (not that I've ever followed it religiously)

Occasionally when I run both, the breaker trips. It's on my list to run a new line and new breaker for the microwave, just not high on the list right now.

Been thinking about getting one for my garage.

What is the point of having one of these? I don't understand how you would save on your HVAC bill. If it's 85 outside it's not going to make your house less than 85. If the inside of your house is hotter than it is outside, open the windows.

But at night when you come home and it's 68 outside but 80 upstairs, you open the windows, turn this puppy on and it sucks in all that cool air from outside and cools your house down in minutes.

Funny you mention that. I realized, a few months ago, that the outlet for the toaster oven and the one for the microwave are on the same circuit. Know how I know?

Most of the time it's people that do a full kitchen remodel and end up moving the microwave. Once finished and they think everything is fine, they eventually have the wrong combination of microwave + lights + small appliance (or whatever) and it trips the breaker.
In fact I have both a brother-in-law and uncle that will trip a breaker if they don't turn a set of lights off while microwaving...they were so pissed when they realized what they did

Along with what NSX said, my aunt uses it when cleaning/vacuuming to suck all the dust out that's being stirred up.

I miss having a whole house fan. Had one in my old house in Delaware but the builder here in NY didnt even have it as an option.
How much would it cost to get one these installed? I want my parents to seriously consider getting one installed.

How do you vent to the attic? Crack open the attic door?

2) Accessibility to the attic
3) Ventillation out of the attic (soffit vents, ridge vents, gable vents)
4) Available mounting location in ceiling
Someone would need to come look to see if the air can exit the attic properly. Otherwise it's not efficient.

These things can save $$$ on ac. Say house ac set at 74 degrees, you get up in the morning, anything less than 74 you turn on the fan for maybe half hour. Thing is, cools off the attic. My attic is real bad, measuring 130 degrees at peak heat gain. For me this is a temporary solution, and will install a thru roof attic fan this year. Friend has one and says the energy savings are huge. Problem is they break constantly.

I've seen those attic vents and whole house fans in South Florida in houses built in the 20's. Back in the day, they ran these and jalousy windows etc. I actually grew up down here and we didn't have anything but a wall unit ac to cool off the living room IF we had guests for dinner.
Now though...all AC all the time. in SOFLA it's not even the heat...the humidity is nasty so you can't even use one of these. Thanks for sharing though...I love fans.
