Haven't shared much in a while, been too busy lately...and now it's too cold to work outside most days.
Since it was actually nice out this weekend (40's-50's) I got another project knocked out and made up a handful of coaster sets to sell as xmas gifts (3 sets out of 5 already gone lol).
Coaster log:
Finishing:
Made these trivets for the wife out of solid maple:
That's all for now. Going to build up a few shelves tomorrow and then everything is probably on hiatus for the winter.
Nice work.
I'll be hitting you up in the spring for a board.
Sweet, let me know.
I may be making one last board this next weekend for myself. I need a "beater" cutting board to use as a daily since I refuse to use the walnut brick board for anything other than a show piece lol. I have a bunch of scrap maple left that I was thinking of just making a normal board without a pattern to use every day.

Thanks dudes. They are a cheap and easy way to make some extra side cash. All of the wood is scrap from other projects so the material is essentially free, just the labor that goes into it.
Dudes, no real update to post but instead a question. I've decided to take this woodworking hobby and turn it into more of a business/side gig for the summer to try and see if I like it. If I don't (or if no sales lol) then no big deal and I'll switch it back to the hobby status. I've started to draw up plans and models in CAD for stuff to sell, like bedside organizers, serving/cheese trays, salt and pepper shakers, cutting boards, etc. so it's getting exciting to gear up to do this. As a result (and I KNOW that I'm going to regret this ) I need some ideas for a business name. I was thinking of doing something that relates wood (lol) grain to the north. Any thoughts?
Sam's Hardwood Grain
Northern Hardwoods
Northern Wood Works
Boner Grain
Northern woodgrains
Hardwoods of the North
Thanks dude! This is the sort of thing I was thinking of doing. Unfortunately as an engineer, I'm not very creative when it comes to this sort of thing.

Finally back at it now that the weather is nice! Got the planer blades swapped for sharp ones, table saw set up verified, and miter saw tuned up before getting started. This is a quick glue up of some walnut pieces that'll eventually turn into a (hopefully) nice serving tray. I have cutting board and two more serving trays that I'm working on out of an AWESOME piece of paduk I scored for a good deal.
Also changed up this table I built a couple years ago to take off the crappy 2x4 base and installed some bare steel hairpin legs. Looks MUCH nicer now.
More pictures will start rolling soon! I have big plans for this year.
Few more pics, progress is slow during the weeks with work and gym going on... First the cutting board with the glue drying. I'm thinking this one will be an edge grain beater board that we'll use as a daily. I got the wood on clearance so I don't have a ton of money into it and edge grain boards are easy to refinish if the need arises.
This just now needs to go through the planer a few times, square up the edges, sand, oil, done. Next up are the paduk serving trays. I got the one pretty much done in terms of shape, now just need to surface plane, sand more, round over the edges, sand more, finish edges, sand more, oil, and then repeat all of this for the next one which is more or less the same thing. I'm excited to see how these turn out. Pictures don't do this justice, the color is actually a lot more bright red in person.
do some pushups and dips and pullups and go for a 2 mile jog...done and back home at your lathe in 30 minutes.
Thanks bro, I'm excited to get a few of these done. And are you kidding? The 2 mile jog would take me 30 minutes, I can't run well/long to save my life.
Finally got around to finishing these paduk serving boards. They turned out awesome and the bright red color is t1ts. Will probably keep one and toss the other up for sale. I plan on making a few walnut versions too...as soon as I get a band saw.
Also made up this cutting board for us to use as a daily. Just some hard maple with walnut accents. This has already gone into use around the house since it's way better than the crappy plastic ones we have now.
Lastly, with mother's day coming up the wife mentioned that her mom wanted a full size body mirror so I decided to make her one. They LOVE (more than you can imagine) golden oak so I got some oak boards milled up to make a frame for a full body mirror. The corners are screwed together for extra strength (vs splines) and the mirror itself is epoxied into place. Hope she likes it otherwise next weekend will be miserable...
Ugh, that is such a good deal but I really don't need a new planer right now. The one I have works really well once I swapped the knives out but thanks for the heads up. My ability to spend any money has been terminated since buying the new car.
The only thing with a previously approved PO is a band saw.
Got a simple project done over the weekend. New napkin holder out of some scrap walnut I had lying around. The crappy Ikea one had to go but I repainted and repurposed the weighted holder thingy.
Not a lot of things nearly as satisfying as a hand plane... This from a coffee table build currently underway. Some stupid mistakes on my part with the build but I think it'll turn out nice in the end. More pics to come when I get closer to wrapping it up.
Having one of those might have helped the other day when I was trying to smooth out the joints between my table top boards. Been years since I used one of those with my grandfather.
Sneak peak at table. Got it all together, just need to do a quick final sand and finish. Legs show up next week so won't be completely done until then. Bonus S2000 content.
