NSXNEXT's Home Improvement Thread

Project starts in about 3 weeks.
Vinyl siding (2900 sq ft)
All capping windows/doors replaced 22 windows/2 doors)
Garage door framing recapped
Soffet capping replaced
Ceiling under front porch
Seamless gutters
Here's the color we're going with (Flagstone).
No not my house

This is our house.

I'll be redoing the front porch/railing with pvc once the contractor is done.

I like the colour choice. Did you look into hardi board? I noticed a huge difference in wind noise going from vinyl to hardi board.

Looked but the price was way more than I was willing to spend. Materials wasn't too bad but labor adds a lot to the estimate.

Hoping to be out of house in 10-15 once kids are out of college.

They are also Tyvek wrapping the house too. We already have 1" rigid insulation on the entire house. So that + Tyvek + vinyl siding should be plenty.

Had vinyl siding on my old house. Still looks after 20 years. Good economical choice, especially with the rigid insulation you already have.

Railing— if you do any standing at the railing and yelling at kids on your lawn might want to do wood. It just feels better than PVC and doesn’t get as hot in the sun.

Going to use the same ones I used for my back deck. My kids climb over them all the time. Solid as a rock.

And I usually sit in the upstairs bathroom on the and fire warning shot at the kids on my lawn.

Wow, what a difference but you know, you could have put the cost of this towards the NSX...

Thanks.
Haha true about the NSX. Just not a smart purchase right now. Had no desire to take out a loan for this work so cash went to home improvement.
Also have a few more things that take precedent right now.
1) Retirement
2) Bar & Bat mitzvah this year
3) 3 kids to put through college
4) Improvements to vacation home
.
.
.
n) Toys

NSXNEXT was the name I created in my early 20s when I joined Acura-tl.com before "life" happened.
I know you guys get a kick out of throwing NSXNONE in my face. All goood. When I'm comfortably prepared for retirement the toy will be a reality.

I gotcha, I made this name on the TL site as well before I realized how internet names work

Smart decisions but no fun.

At one time I wanted an M5 really really badly. I would have sacrificed so many other things though to get one that I am glad I never pulled the trigger.

I, too, made my screen name years ago when I thought my life would turn out differently

In all seriousness, great choice on the siding - it looks great

New siding looks great. I can't tell from the low quality before picture but did you have white corner caps before or were they the same color as the siding? I really like it being trimmed out in white.

They were the same (faded gray) as the rest of the siding.

We also found out as they were removing the siding over our front porch that we used to have a metal roof on the porch roof.

Now pricing out a red standing seam roof to match the front door.

What about doing the same for the back porch and back bay window?

Didn't have time to do it before the siding but we are debating getting rid of the bay window and rear door and putting a slider where the door is.

Finished the stone veneer foundation wall this weekend.
Next up...landscaping.
May continue the stone theme under the front porch.

Very cool. Thank you. That might be the perfect material to use to do our fireplace.

The stone looks good. Gives the house a little more detail than just boring concrete or running the siding all the way down to the ground (my home...boring).

Yeah I have a ton of it left. I want to continue it under the steps and along the front porch but that requires a bit more work.
I have to build cement board panels then attach them under the porch.
Doable just a bit more work.
I need to replace the railings and deck boards too.
Just $$$ and time.

Oh so you are doing that install yourself. I didn't know if you had the same company that did the siding do it. You just use outdoor stone adhesive to mount it to the concrete?

Yeah I'm doing it myself.
Prep is key. If the concrete is painted your SOL and will have to sandblast off the paint.
Mine was originally covered in stucco. I stripped the stucco, sanded off anything remaining, and then power washed it.

Used this adhesive to adhere it.

I went through 14 tubes of adhesive for the area.

Ahhh shit I need to double check but pretty sure they painted mine grey to match the fiber cement board.

Very familiar with a similar adhesive we use it with holding down stair pavers.

How did you strip it, hammer and chisel?

The stucco came off with just a light hammer.
Used an electric drill with a wire brush attachment to get anything else off then power washed.

Prep is definitely key.
