I Installed My Own Crown Moulding!

Here are the before shots:

$200 in materials and 2 hours later...

You can see the different sizes of crown that I went with in this photo:

There was an A/C register in the way. Here's what I did:

How many angle cuts did you screw up?

Thank you. I actually did practice cuts on scrap wood before the final cut. However, that's what took me 27 hours to do.

Great job. I put up some crown and chair rail in my dining room. How square were your walls? That is one thing that I found that whoever built my condo had no idea what a level or square was. Thank good I painted my as I had to puddy some of the corners to meet up. sadly after I was done I saw on this old house, they went over the correct way to measure and cut the angles for that. DOH!

looks awesome... did you go real wood crown or just the fake foam? $200 is cheap for all of that...

My walls aren't square at all. Fortunately, I found a tool that tells you the exact angle of each inside and outside corner. Mine were more like 89.3 degrees!

MDF FTW! Real wood crown was like 12 a sq. ft.!

Looks great.

If you're painting it, do not waste your money on real wood. MDF is a great material. Takes a great coat of paint and doesn't shrink (a big issue with outside corners when you use real wood).

Most of the ceilings in my house are vaulted...the exception is 1 bedroom, the hall bath, and the master toilet area. I'd LOVE to install crown molding in those rooms, but I'm afraid to attempt it!

What was the tool you used?

I used an electronic angle finder, miter saw, nail gun, nail punch (for nails that didn't make it in all the way), stud finder, putty, sand paper, caulk, paint and a paint brush.

I never wanted to kill myself more then the first time I tried to do moulding work. Now I just buy extra materials for when I mess up. Actually, my sister does interior design and she is amazing with Crown Moulding. Oh well... at least I can play baseball!!!

I'd love some crown moldings but I'm afraid they will make my rooms look too small.

Are you going to do crown/baseboard in there?

Nice job!

i plan on doing this in my house as well, but I don't have the patience for the corners. Might do pre-cut corners or something.

I'd be curious how that turns out? My corners weren't 90°--more like 88.3° .
