Gas grill gurus...

I have a small portable Weber grill that uses the small propane cans. If I buy the adaptor and hook it up to a 20lb propane tank, will the gas grill increase in power/heat?

Thanks.

Not a guru, but I'm going to say that a grills power/heat capability is dependent on its build and design -- burners, BTUs, grate material, etc.

A larger propane tank is just going to give you longer grilling times.

Your question is almost like asking if a larger gas tank will give your car more power.

If you use the current hose, i am going to say no. If you get a hose with a larger inner diameter, that should get you more gas flow. But, the grill may not be designed to handle more gas flow.

You are normally restricted to the size of the hose, unless you want to put a turbocharger on it and then it'll be blazing.

I think this. The burners only allow so much gas to come through them at once.

The burners aperture controls the flow of fuel

The regulator handles that. So the tank capacity matters not.

The red thing is the regulator. Don`t run your grill without it.

Get a burner/regulator from a turkey fryer and you will be cooking. Just don't sue me when you set yourself on fire.

Some grills have a regulator built in, check that first before buying a hose with a regulator on it.

If you need more heat, see if you can place lava rocks around the burners

http://lifehacker.com/5922283/use-la...ega-heat-boost

Make no mistake, most gas grills are hot enough already, but if yours is a little on the old side or you're having trouble getting it hot enough to cook your food, here's a simple way to hack your grill: pack lava rocks around the burners. You won't make the actual grill run hotter, but you will retain much more heat under your cooking surface, which means deliciously browned grilled meats and veggies.

....

The lava rocks retain a ton of heat, and you know what meat plus heat equals: the delicious Maillard effect. Chow notes that over time, those lava rocks will start to get covered with rendered fat, so you'll have to flip them over when they're covered. Replace them every few months or so. That's all there is to it: a quick trip to your department store or backyard store and a few minutes of work can drastically improve the power of your gas grill.
