I love this new trend that seems to be going on with dark frame windows and doors. It looks great.

We think so too. We went with black frames/doors and white trim inside too.

Also doing a black metal deck railing.

Interesting set up for the garage. I am assuming both are connected at the corner?

Yes they are. It is a very spacious 3 car and protects my family from carelessly opening a door on my car.

I assume your wife gets the wider door for easier entry and exiting?

It’s code around here.

And it does come in handy once in a while as the house ages and for peace of mind when doing things that involve holes in the wall.

I like that you can hang pictures anywhere in the house without working about hitting electric!

Protects from rodent damage too. Field mice are very good at getting into warm houses.

Lots of rain the past two weeks has slowed things down a bit.

Well is done but I don't know yet the depth, and there was a crew out there yesterday getting going on the framing for the deck. Attic insulation is done (combination of foam-in-place and blown in cellulose), interior sound insulation around the bedrooms and the basement workshop is done.

We selected our countertop stones, and the pavers for our backyard walks and patio/fireplace.

Kitchen island is Daltile White Nova quartz (shown below), kitchen wall is Silestone Marengo, a charcoal gray quartz. Various matte/leather black granite for the powder room, utility sink, and Jack/Jill bathroom. Hanstone Pewter quartz for the master bath.

I wanna build a house so bad, but I have a feeling staying within a budget will be really hard!

We thought about a pizza oven but figured we wouldn’t use it enough to justify buying one.

We found out today we hit the higher aquifer with the well so we save about $12k on the well, which more than offsets the $2k we went over on windows and $3k on appliances.

If you go for the best looking stuff every time you select materials you will go over. We have been asking ourselves “will it look good to us” rather than “is it the best we could find” to stay on track.

It is good to know that we can upgrade our Trex decking and railing, and have wiggle room on tiles.

Had a little setback- the cabinet subcontractor was not staying anywhere near on schedule so our builder is switching horses.

The guy we were working with was designing all inset cabinets, the place we are switching to that appears to be an upgrade, need to get clarity from our builder.

Work proceeds... deck structure is done, concrete patio under the porch is poured, sidewalk trench was being dug. Pad for fireplace and gravel for paver patio are in place, lines marking the service walks also visible. Still looking at late winter/early spring completion.

Very common out here in California.

4 more months.

Which is OK, need time to get our current house updated inside—mostly fresh paint and decluttering our lives before moving. .

Awesome! Looks like weather is co-operating.

What is the strategy for lighting on the back of the house and outdoor fireplace?

I might go squat before they finish building. I'm sure there are laws that would protect me.

LED floods on the deck skirt for the back yard to see our mongrels when they are out at night.

Firelight for the patio, portable lanterns if we want more.

Us too. We are essentially swapping indoor living space for outdoor and hobby space. So much fun and work so far to do this but it should be well worth it. .

Nice progress! Looking forward to seeing more.

Any landscaping plans (other than the fireplace area)?

Just what we have to do in the front, and a raised box vegetable garden.

Friends are donating a bunch of ornamental grasses to put around the place, but that is it so far. I am sure some time I might figure out where to put trees in the back and maybe some shelter for the patio ( pergola and/or trees ) but we want to see how and when we tend to use the different areas.

^ Agree...that is what I'm doing at my new place now before making any major changes.

I'm a big fan of outdoor motion lights...as long as they are on a switch and have the option to be turned on permanently (until the switch is turned back off). Usually on the ones I have installed, you flip the switch on and off a few times to override the motion detector and keep it on.

Went out today, house is all drywalled. Tapers were working inside today. Stone masons were working outside putting on front stone. Beds for the paver patio and service walks in the back are in and compacted.

We also selected our cabinet styles, colors, and door/drawer pulls/knobs.

They are. We are still at a good time for seeding a lawn etc. The sub our builder is most worried about is the sider because he has been set back by rainy weather.

We had a fence installed a couple years ago in February... the outdoor guys work year round and take advantage of weather windows.

Yesterday’s weather was pretty glorious.

This house is going to be phenomenal...
any chance of spending Christmas in it? Or is that too tight a timeline?

Too tight, unfortunately. I will probably spend Christmas time painting.
