One other thing I totally forgot about that would be awesome to have is run a nat gas line out to your deck or wherever you plan on putting a grill for natural gas grilling. Also run one to a patio area for firepit if you're into that sort of thing.

Totally on board with this. I have natural gas to my grill in the current house. For outdoor fireplace we are going wood burning because our layout would make a woodburning fireplace in the house very expensive and I love wood fires.

I am considering spancrete garage floors with basement space beneath as well.

Update: Architecture complete, builder is developing pricing.

A few things have been changed from my initial vision due to lot size/money tradeoffs.

-3 car garage (lot width constraint)
-no spancrete, the house is plenty big.
-mound septic required, blended with existing swale
-hot water recirculation
-perimeter fence (big lot, $$$)
-hardscape firepit area
-closed cell foam insulation
-soft finish of workshop and a wine cellar/storm shelter in basement

I have been working on a 3d model using a freeware package. Once I have it done I will post some renders.

Nice! Looking forward to seeing the rendering.

I forget, are you doing any solar or grey-water capture for irrigation?

Solar is a waste of money around here. I looked into quite a few green ideas... only the foam insulation seems to have a solid payback. Will of course be doing high efficiency HVAC.

Will see about water... some of the residents storm runoff is collected by the golf course. I have to have the mound septic because of the nearby wetland preserve.

Gotcha, makes sense.

I cannot fathom why more houses in my area don't have grey water re-purposing for landscape irrigation, but maybe the technology isn't where it needs to be.

Modeling the roof without a roof calculator is fun.

Rough rendering. Very little of the exterior finish details (shutters, gable decor, lintels, drip cap, etc.) not modeled yet.

That is the garage foundation for the side load part of the garage. The footings are at a lower depth because there is no basement beneath the garage.

Next renders will show the stepped foundation for the walkout basement.

Got the full lot terrain modeled reasonably well from the topographic plat. Looking up from about 2/3 of the way back in the back yard. To give an idea of scale, the screen porch on the deck is 17x17.

There will be an outdoor wood-burning fireplace and patio obstructing this view eventually.

Thanks!

Amazing what you can do with open source software (Sweet Home 3D in this case) these days.

A lot, guessing 40 or so, some just learning how to do things and reworking things. But it has helped my wife visualize what the plans show so she is comfortable with what we are doing, and helped me find an additional 150 sq ft of storage space in the attic.

I am making an effort to make sure she is entirely comfortable and engaged with the entire project.

That way if something isn’t right we share the blame.

I'm much younger than you and gave up much earlier

I created all the construction drawings for our house.... picked fixtures, windows, everything...
I showed her what I was doing, but got the same sort of response that she can't envision it or whatever.
It's easier just to take responsibility. She's going to blame you anyway. Thankfully everything worked out well in our case.

Looks nice! Conrats on the plot too. My sister is nearing completion on a custom house, and my wife is jelly.

Dude. Mikey. It's gorgeous!! Congratulations! Please post zillions of updates and pics.

Will your screened porch have solid window panels you can install in the winter to make it more of a 3 season porch? I didn't do that, and wish I had. My mom's beach house porch has them (soft plastic with sliding panels that can be lifted or lowered), and it's positioned to take in a lot of sun in the winter, so is surprisingly useable for much of the cold season. Granted, DE doesn't get nearly as cold as IL. My porch is easily my favorite room in the house, and I wish I had use of it for a greater portion of the year. You originally mentioned a 3 season room with a fireplace, so just curious.

Also wondering what your flooring will be in the porch. Our builders continued the trex to flow smoothly from the deck to the wrap around porch at the front of the house. It made the most sense, but it also makes it that much less useable as it gets colder, and has discouraged me from having custom panels made for the windows because the floor will still admit so much cold air.

We are going to try EZ-Breeze windows on the porch to 3 season it. Sounds like what your Mom’s beach house has.

We scratched the fireplace on the porch due to cost and instead went with the patio and fireplace in the yard. Paver walk, patio, and fireplace for roughly same cost.

It is going to be Trex but without gaps... builder says bugs won’t be able to get in. I don’t expect to be out there much in the depths of winter.

Everybody who sees the plan falls for the porch. One of our friends says she and her husband are going to move into our basement so she can use it.

My hole has been described as panoramic.

More progress than I expected... hole is dug, footings are poured. Looks like we have a good amount of backfill and topsoil to work with.
