That makes me feel really good about the ring I bought for my fiancee then.

That's almost sound advice. Buying overseas was much cheaper and I got an artisan to handcraft a replica of the Tiffany's 6-prong setting in white gold for next to nothing.

Good info as always. I would concentrate on what she likes or what you think she likes based on your relationship. It doesn't really make sense for you to get everything perfect if she doesn't care for it. This way you'll be able to save some money.

Here is the diamond I ended up getting:

Color: E
Clarity: VS1
Cut: Very Good (I was fortunate to be able to look at the diamond under the loop)
Carat: 1.1

Also, when it comes to the setting, I went with the bucket type setting because the jeweler advised me that the prong settings can bend easily and have the diamond fall off.

Congrats, and good luck.

All I'll say is:

Quality stone, great cut > Big diamond

In other words.... Brilliance, sparkle, shine, attractive design > Size

Here's a link to the thread I started when I bought my wife's engagement ring. I used diamond.com and was very happy with what I got.

Put a lot of thought into the setting as well - especially what will hold the diamond in place. My prongs are made of a different material than the band - a stronger metal - so the diamond is more secure. Also, the setting plays a bit role in how the stone looks -- bigger/small/dull/sparkly - since it determines how much light passes through the stone and how much of the stone is visible.

Or I am a cheep ass bastard.

I got one similar to what badboy got for my wife. A little smaller. A good cut, color and clarity will make the stone look larger in a lot of cases.

OK....let me try again.

The ring I got for my wife was similar to the one in badboy's photo. Only smaller and F color instead of E.

Does that work?

But so true.

In my home it's "what's mine is mine, what's yours is mine, you don't own shit." But she is cool with me borrowing.

It's a concept you will discover after marriage, while no longer having sex.

Well, in all seriousness, my advice to the OP is to set out with a budget first...then see what he can purchase with that amount.

I just recently upgraded my wife's ring for our 20 years together / 18th wedding anaversary (call it an early 20 year gift). I wound up a Jared because I just didn't think I could trust local or the internet - I'm not a diamond expert and also I want to see something in person if I'm going to drop major cash. I got her a 1.25 Ct solitare, round cut, SI1, and I *think* the color was H (it's a very white diamond). Basically, we went for the quality marks that look very good to the naked eye (and to her) without staring to pay a lot for what looked good under a microscope. The diamond itself was $6.5K, and the setting was $800 (.25 Ct small diamonds set in the band). It's a beautiful ring - $8K total after tax out the door. I'm not saying I got a great deal as many will likely point out, but I did do enough research to know it was ballpark. 1.25 Ct. was a really nice size - big enough to show up, but not so large she'd be worried in a parking lot about loosing a finger.

So the advice I give everyone looking for a ring (having bought two...). Know what she likes and get that. Go big enough so she knows that you sacrificed for her, but not so big that you're sacrificing getting off to a good start financially with your marriage.

Hope that helps.

Uhm....not really at this point. I need to stay reasonable, we just bought a place. Definitely nothing north of 8, would like to stay around or less than 4K which can pick up a decent 1.25....with searching maybe something more.
