Post What runs Acurazine?

I’d like to know how Acurazine works. For starters, what kind of server is running AZ? What OS is on that server? What application is running AZ and what application is used to design and develop it?

I have basic HTML code skills. And I have not learned anything new for 2-3 years. So learning one or two of what makes AZ runs would be helpful.

ibsiggy

as of november last year

Currently we're on 2 dell pizza boxes that are P4 2.4Gz /w 4GB RAM each /w ultra 320 SCSI. Nothing earth shattering...

Granted we will soon be on 2 quad processor xenon servers /w 8GB ram and 8 Ultra 320 SCSI disks

8 processors and 16GB ram, hope it'll be enough

Thanks Matt!
Our current gameplan changed a bit since matt g's quote.

The newer quad xenon processors boxes are all compaq 4U rack servers. (sorry although I even have one sitting on my desk at work I forgot the model number)

The current setup is is:

2 Dell 1650 servers 2.4gz processors 4Gb ram /w Ultra 320 SCSI disks.
Both servers run all of sites they are load balaced by round-robin dns.
Servers have dual port ethernet, they have 2 public facing NICs for internet requests. And 1 private network to handle DB queries.

If you do a "nslookup www.acurazine.com" from a CMD prompt (or whatever) you'll see it returns 2 IP addresses. Basically you keep switching between 2 boxes the entire time you are browse here for load balancing.

Unfortunetly one of the boxes is also running the DB, so it see's a 12-25% load overhead.

Sometime in the next couple of weeks well be adding a dedcated quad processor DB server in. It has 4Gb ram and 4 ultra 160 SCSI disks on a hardware raid controller. Then we'll have 2 frontend servers to handle web requests followed by a private network dedicated DB server to hande DB requests.

In the weeks following that we'll be adding another front end server. So we'll have 3 servers handling internet requests /w one backend DB server on the final setup.

that what you wanted to know? excuse the type-o's I just woke up...

(I have another 4 servers on stanby, well I'm using them for other things at the moment in the same datacenter) Datacenter is on top of South Mountain in Phoenix, AZ. Yup your web requests are going to the top of a mountain It's 100% private /w 2 OC3 (155Mb lines) comming for a total throughput of 310Mb. We use a whopping 3Mb of that, and the line see at max 8-9Mb of use outbound (serving).

I spend a lot of time optimizing the servers so they run fast on what we have. (i.e recompiling apache/php to have the smallest memory footprint as possible) and optimizing it for the boxes we have. Soopa spends a lot of time making the PHP faster by doing all sorts of stuff. Thats how we manage to make this all work.

it's a lot of work, and constant upkeep..

yes! on another server. I have them offline at the moment though. Also have a private VOIP server running for chat using an app called "ventrillo".

With enough response I'll start the server back up for that use.

MadCat, this was posted on the TL forum several weeks ago, and covers the history of what is acurazine. I've never seen the history part of it in one thread before, but had gathered my understanding about the site in bits and peices. It was nice to see it explained in one thread. Doesn't have alot of the technical stuff, but alot of background.

I read it Just thought that since the technical stuff had already been covered (in this thread), it might be nice to post a link to some "background" info.

If they are 4U Rack Server and Quad Xeon, they are more than likely the Proliant DL580 G2.
Soit would look like this:

This means they are Quad XEON (Xenon = Light Bulbs, Xeon = CPUs) on a 400/533 FSB
Max 32GB of PC1600 Ram
4 Hot Swap U320 Drive Bays
2 Redundant Power Supplies
6 PCI-X slots

I'm sure I'm not supposed to say anything, but HP will have the 580 G3 out in the next 2 months. 533 (133x4) replaced by a 667 FSB (166x4) and 3.6Ghz Processors on a 90nm chip die.

thanx for clarifying the xeon vs xenon it was a type-o note the "I just woke up so excuse any type-o's in my thread"

No that doesn't' look like that. However that is a 4U server you have pictured.

Similar specs though. Is the exact model that important? It's a quad proc xeon compaq machine /w 4GB ram and 4 ultra 160 SCSI disks on a hardware raid controller.

It's a junker computer I have laying around (10 of them). Which is why I am using it/them...This is it...
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/s...proliant6400R/
4x550mhtz processors
4x18Gb Ultra 160 Disks
4GB ram.
Way overkill for a DB server. Especially since the one were on now barely uses 14% of a 2.4gz processor duing peak hours. Mysqueel supports SMP if compiled too. Should run like a champ.

If its beige then its a 580 G1 or a Proliant 6400R

Hey Siggy, find out what speed the processors are inside that beast for me.
Look under the Power Supply towards the middle of the machine. Model/Serial are there. Will either say:
PL6400R XN ### or
DL580R01 X###
That 3 digit number is the speedof the Xeon

And yes its important because I am retiring 3 6400Rs in the next couple months and as long as the main parts of the machine are sent back, they dont count things like RAM, Disks, RAID controllers, etc. Since (I'm assuming) these will be running Linux and not Windows, no need to stop at 4GB of RAM.

550mhtz
I believe 4GB is the max the mobo supports.

Gotcha.

Well let me know if you need any parts. I'm retring 2 Quad 500s and one Quad 550. But I have a ton of spare drives for these things.

PS: I must have missed it before, do you run a hosting company or something? How does one accumulate 10 Quad Xeon boxes?

10 is nothing, we use 300 boxes for just one application somtimes. Mainly sun/dell servers. I don't like the Compaq/HP stuff (kinda why I called it junk) most of what we have left is end of life here. So it goes out for auction, or gets distributed. Our customer base is close to 20 million people, so the apps are scaled real big and distributed to handle the mass ammounts of traffic. Explaining where the large ammounts of hardware I get comes from...

No, I don't run a hosting company even though I do host acurzine.com. It's a special deal I have worked out with another organization/division of the company I work for. I previosuly worked in that divison (over a year ago now) and they still rely on me for support.... So they hook me up This is also why we have a strick NWS policy, the company I work for doesn't tolerate it in the least. So my job would be on the line if it ever became an issue. Anyone who does a traceroute and looks at the reverse dns lookups could figure out which company I work for.

I could put acurazine on sun servers (large ones) but they honestly suck. And working/developing on them sucks too. better/faster/cheaper (yup, all 3) to use intel processors and Linux.

If I had my way we'd be running on a big cluster of SGI boxes however the 4 SGI boxes I have at home stay there!

New job I just started today I'm working with all IBM servers (powerPC) and AIX. One application spread across 12 sites and close to 600 servers.

Will do, because before I know it I'll have given all of thse boxes away or someone else will have snagged them. Might not be a bad thing to keep a few power supplys sitting around. I have plenty of SCA SCSI disks though...
