Sony: PS3 News and Discussion Thread
My OG PS3 I got at launch died last year so it lasted about 3 years or so. My boy gave me his PS3 when he moved. I prolly game 3-4 hours a week and watch DVD and blu-ray 7 hours a week or so. Not that hardcore a gamer I guess.
lets see bought a launch day 60GB PS3. that thing started to die sometime in 07/08. and just died in IIRC 08.
it was something i flip the power switch in the back and it beeps 3x and just blinks IIRC the red light.
being that they no longer made the 60GB PS3s, i sent it to sony and got a replacement unit for $150.
that thing lasted less than a year (longer than the 90day warranty) it still boots but wont read any discs... DVD/Bluray/CD.
so i just got a stupid Slim PS3 with iirc the bingcashback program.
so far its been ok. got that thing in 09/10?

If you're a DIY'er, try the Gilksy fix on YouTube. Great series of videos. I figure I'll give it a shot when mine bites the dust. Worst case, it doesn't work and you buy a new PS3 the next day.

Yea, I downloaded the pdf guide already. I just need to get some tools (don't have a heat gun). I will give it a try and see.
What's with newer gaming consoles dying all the time these days? Xboxes and PS3s both have some serious issues.
I guess considering a Super Nintendo was like $200 (?) back in the day, we're getting a value, kinda?
I bet I could dust off my SNES, plug it in, blow the dust off the cartridges and it would fire right up without any problems.

I've still got a launch 60gb that works fine. I have noticed the fans have gotten louder over the years, considering breaking open the case and doing a thorough cleaning. I too need to upgrade the hard drive, can't install any of the games I've downloaded lately because its too full. Anyone have any experience with the WD Scorpio Blue drives? I'm thinking the 320 because I can ride down to BB and get it for $50.
Just got a new PS3...well, my second new one
. I got a new one yesterday, but it was defective. Swapped it out for a functioning new one today. With the $50 hardware for hardware trade bonus, I came out little better than if I had bought a new one, repaired my old one, and sold my old one...plus I didn't have to mess with it. The one thing that surprised me was that GameStop takes PS3's with YLOD as long as they can get them to eventually boot up and play a disk for 20 minutes. You just get dinged a refurb fee of $35 on the trade-in value.

I wound up getting the Blue. Easy transition, did the backup/restore and don't seem to have lost anything. New hard drive doesn't seem to be any faster, but it certainly is quieter than the OEM Seagate that was in it. And I can finally install the games and demos I've downloaded
mine is one of the very original one with 20gb i think and i replaced hdd with 250gb last year. other than running kinda noise after it being heated (where i placed ps3 doesn't get very good ventilation...) due to fan, it's all good so far.
