PSP vs Nintendo DS
PSP vs Nintendo DS
What do most of your kids (or you) prefer or have? - PSP or the Nintendo DS thing. My son was talking all about his friends having Nintendo DS, but then yesterday I saw the PSP and I was like - wow - maybe I should tell him he wants that instead!
Is it a preference thing or is one much better than the other?
Thanks
(no, I cannot afford both)

I'm once again in this predicament now. I made a thread about it about a year ago and the consensus was DS.
From what I have heard the DS offers faster gaming. Meaning zero to no load times due to it being a cart. The PSP is more like a "hope your ready to sit down and play for a while". Plus HUGE load times from the PSP
The DS has games that you can just pick up and play with not too much of a story that you have to follow being that PsP games are more just ports from the PS2.
I personally refuse to give Sony any more of my money. I have 2 ps2's that took a crap. So reguardless of games, my money will go to Nintendo.

If your son wants a DS, that is what you should probably get him (if you are planning to give him something).
If his friends have them, then he can play with / against them multiplayer. Also, maybe they can trade games with each other if they get tired of them (if you allow it).
The PSP is a technically superior machine, but Nintendo has a way of putting in a "fun factor" into their systems to separate them from the crowd.
Just like how the Wii has a cool gimick (Wiimote), the DS has a cool gimick too, that being two screens, one of which is a touchscreen. It can add a whole new dimension to gaming.
As an added bonus, the DS is cheaper!
How old is your son?

We are fortunate - he does not ask for much (unlike some kids that demand stuff and get all whiney) so we like to surprise him with stuff that we know he really wants - but we save it for a birthday or Christmas etc.
I'll check with some of the parents of his friends - see if that is the one they do have.
If he is 6, even more so you should get a DS. I think in general, the PSP is targeted for an older audience.
There are also some educational games for the DS like Brain Age, Big Brain Academy, My Word Coach, etc.
There are probably educational games for the PSP, but I think the DS would have more.

I have both, and I would go with a DS Lite.
The games are cheaper and less easy to break on the DS. I've heard numerous cases where the PSP game's UMD casing broke because a kid stepped on it, that will not happen with a DS cartridge.
+ The UMD is exposed in a small portion on the back and easily can get scratched and damaged.

My nephew is 6. He has a DS and loves it. When he comes over, he plays my PSP and he gets frustrated because he cannot control the games. DS is more geared toward the younger kids, plus its built better than the PSP. Your kid drops the PSP once, its all over. For a 6 year old, I say get him the DS.
hey thanks guys - I appreciate all the feedback and shared experiences. I love video games and probably would have gone with the PSP, but after hearing the feedback I agree that if it were for me - a PSP (well, actually a PS3 first!) but since it is for my son - the DS sounds like the smart choice. I like the abilty to continue to get the educational games too - he has always enjoyed that stuff on his Leapster. Thanks again.
