Question PSP dilemma

First of all, has anyone on here pre-ordered a PSP yet? I know gamestop and eb games stop taking pre order on this item. Anyway, Sony will lauch PSP on March 24 nationwide w/ 1MM units, however, it'll be sold out on that very day or if not then shortly after that. I already reserved 1 from ecost, but I've just learned that they won't have it instock until March 28. Should I take a day off from work and just go to Bestbuy and get 1 when the store first open so there's no chance of it being sold out or just wait for my shipment from ecost?

I'm not sure what this PSP thing is, but if it's anything like PS2 was, you will need to camp out in front of your local best buy/circuit city, etc in order to get one when the store opens. You can't just go at 9 am or whenever it opens and expect there to be one.

I've heard a lot of good and bad about this thing. Price is very high but who cares. The screen is easily scratched. Battery life sucks and the media for the games is proprietary to the unit, meaning PS2 games wont play on it. That's no surprise but some aren't happy about buying games they already own for the PS2. Also, the controls can be finicky and sometime fail.

that link above is a review of the PSP by engadget.com. I'm not really into the portable gaming thing here, but w/ the built in mp3 player, wi-fi technology and mp4 video playback, hell, that's just awesome. Anyway, but if you think it's going be crazy like that on launch day, then I'll wait for my shipment from ecost then. Thanks

for what this can do, the price is great. I think Sony is actually losing money on selling the units (similar to xbox) to make money on the games...

the screen will get scratched if you bang it around, anything will...treat it like a decent piece of equipment and it will be fine.

haven't heard the battery complaint... but as for the games, would a ps2 game even fit in the psp? aren't psp games mini cds?

The psp is hot, i have played with one from the japanese market for a couple of hours and oit was great. The graphics are right there with the PS2 and sometimes look better because the screen is so small and high res that everything looks gorgeous. You guys will love it. BTW, i am getting my psp from a local small video game corner spot.

I preordered mine from EB games but I plan on selling it. If you can take the day off then go ahead and do it.

I am personally waiting for the GT4 version of the PSP or just till the upgrade it to a better battery life.

There's been initial problems with the launch models in Japan...

The battery life has been much lower then predicted. Sony said it's looking into it. Also, some games had problems being recognized.

From the initial reactions, the only complaint from people about the regular functions of the PSP have been that loading time takes an eternity at times.

I just wish they added some sort of harddrive feature on this thing for movies. Sony said they would extend the movie download to the US, and I don't really wanna shell out another 100 bucks for a 1gb mem stick.

Junkster, who plans to wait a month or two before getting it

The best portable ever was the Turbo Graphix portable because it played the real TG16 games. You could take the card out of the TG16 and put it in the portable, no problem. Too bad it went threw batteries hella fast.

I preordered one from EBgames. I hate it how they want you to bundle it with 3 games and 1 accessory.

They don't take pre-order on their website, and the store won't put you on the list either,

I don't know if you guys check out the news about this stuff, but Sony is planning on distributing 1 million units by the end of March.

This is twice as many units that shipped for the Nintendo DS before christmas.

Those aren't quite that dependable news source... I'm sure most of those peeps didn't even play the thing and are talking out of their asses...

Gamespot had articles refering to Japanese PSP user forums and newsgroups as sources... I'm thinking it's a bit more credible source.

hehe... I would definitely use it during work.

It's mostly a game platform...

But with the promises that Sony is making for this thing (movies, digicam, organizer, etc), it might be the cool all-in-one...

Then again, Sony rarely delivers on all it's promises.

hehe... funny story. My friend's little son wanted a Gameboy for christmas, so I bought one for him. My mom was along whe he was playing with teh gameboy and she said "I don't play games, but that thing looks so cool, I want one just to carry around"...

Silly moms...

this is why I will still buy it. its too cool of a gadget to pass up, and 250 for a wifi movie player mp3 etc etc etc...its a steal.

edit: even though my treo 650 already does all of that, and I've still never used it for anything but phone calls.

I could think of a million different situation where I would use this. It has mp3 capability for music, mp4 capability for porn on the go, , and there are articles out there saying that later this year, there'll be pda application and internet application (since it has built in wireless capability) for the PSP. Also, if you read the spec, it's handdown better than some of the more expensive PDAs from HP, Dell, and others out there, not to mention the display, which also is much better than the alot more expensive creative portable media player.

I will get a PS2 but not when it first comes out. I can wait a year or so for the price drop.

Right... but when exactly is any of this useful? If I'm not at work, I'm either at home, the gym, or running some kind of errands. I just can't think of a time when I would want to watch movies, play games, etc...other than at my house. And its too big to carry around for the sole purpose of mp3.

Don't get me wrong, its great and I'm definitely buying one... just can't figure out what for.

Keep up the good work

I really want one to play at work with everyone else but I'm gonna wait a while to see if they have any problems. My little cousin had on on New Years Day and complained about the 1-2 hour battery life. He works at a Game Stop and had one to "get familiar with." I was very impressed with the PSP in the five minutes I had my hands on it but I'm tired of getting screwed by getting the first one.

Actually, the home market (Japan) was the guinea pig this time. From some of the articles that I had read, Sony had fixed the control button issues and as far as battery life is concerned, it was largely due to the brightness setting of the screen. Engadget.com website recommend medium setting to achieve the 4 hrs estimate given in the specs.

I work at a resort and sony has been having their rollout meetings in our conference center. Yesterday they had about 25 units all linked up with 4 games or so. I played one for about 30 minutes and it was pretty cool. THe guy said they have been running from 7-6pm and have to change the batteries halfway through the day.

Don't think of this as just a portable gaming device, but rather a portable media player (PMP) also. And if you do that then it is definitely a BARGAIN compare to other portable media players in the market out there. For example like the Creative pmp, the display is sub par compare to Sony PSP, and yet it's priced at $450 or higher, and it doesn't even have wide screen. Granted, it has a 20 gb hard drive, but so what. Anyway, that's just my
