FWIW - I had a Lite-On burner crap out on me. Myself and my friend that builds machines have both been using NEC's lately without any troubles.

Personally, I think most optical drives are built crappy now days. If you beat on them enough I'd bet that you could break one from several of the major names.

Me! Using Nero 6, I've managed to burn over 1000 discs with no coasters! Go for it! I think you can get a good one under 50 now.

I have a Sony, but I'd say Plextor, which is a bit pricier than other brands, is the best. Check out Newegg.com for good deals on DVD burners.

Plextor Releases 18X Dual Format DVD Burner

Kristopher Kubicki - February 13, 2006 1:31 AM

Plextor's newest can do 18X on single layer DVDR media, 10X on DVD+R DL

If four minute DVD-R burn times were not fast enough for you, Plextor just announced the E-IDE PX-760A DVD recorder. The drive is capable of burning 18X speeds on 16X certified DVD-R and DVD+R media. Furthermore, the drive obtains 10X speeds on supported DVD+R dual layer media, and 6x record speeds on DVD-R dual layer media. The drive is capable of burning DVD-RW, DVD-VR and CD-R/W media as well.

SATA versions of the PX-760 are due out later this year, but Plextor is releasing an external USB version called the PX-760UF, at the same time as the E-IDE drive. The drive features a 2MB buffer and Plextor's PowerRec technology. PowerRec dynamically adjusts the laser intensity and burn speed to correct impurities in the recordable media.

The new PX-760 drives will retail for $119 USD in April of this year. The retail package comes with Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 and Plextor's Plextools software.

Plextor has to be my favorite with lite-on at a close second. I had a couple sony's and Hps in diff. machines make more error discs than good discs. You can find plenty of Plextors and Lite-Ons on newegg.com for $40 bucs.

you know, when i built the computer, i paid $30 bucks for a CD-RW/DVD-Rom and $40 for my CD-RW/DVD-RAM

I shoulda just spent the $10 bucks and put two dvd burners in when I built the computer.

the reason why I added the second burners is because i'm makin some copies of our wedding dvd's for family and stuff, and we got a huge family so i gotta make a lotta them.

I personally don't believe people care to receive dvd's of other peoples weddings. but my parents wanna send them out to everyone. so I gotta burn about 50 sets of a triple-dvd set that was made for our wedding.

each dvd takes about 5 minutes to burn. the dual dvd burners will cut my time in half.

I was just explaining what my need for dual was.

nowadays it's so cheap to get these burners cheap there's no point in buyin a ROM drive. Unless you want a Lightscribe :wasteofmoney:
