hey guys, i'm a shooter newbie. i was hoping to get some advice. i've played halo, and was wondering what's the closest thing for the pc. like what game has both the game part, where you beat levels and such...and the tournament part, where you can play the computer or other people in one on one, two on two, battles.

i've heard of so many i don't know what's what...

halo
kill zone
unreal
counter strike
half life

any suggestions??

this will get you counterstrike as well, which is one of the online reletives of HL

 

FPS I like: Half-Life (most likely to be supplanted by Part 2), Unreal Tournament 2004...Just make sure your video card can handle these apps.

 

Halo fuggin sucks, I don't see the excitement...

half-life was out way before halo, so it'd be the other way around...

 

You've been able tyo play the new counter strike for the past 3 weeks or so....

 

Unreal 2k4 is the most Halo-like game on the PC.

That statement is far from the truth... and a cop out. Soopa trying to keep the game "cool" :P The game sucks... I just don't follow the crowd... which is all that game is. A bunch of FPS newbies played it on the xbox and thought it was *new* and 3l33t... as it didn't have nearly the following until the xbox version came out...

anyways... guess you have to have a good opinion about anything soopa likes or not state anything about it

Along with UT2004 checkout the new Tribes. I haven't played the new tribes yet but I hear it's good.

 

neither of the games are terrible. im definitely more into halo 2, tho. voice chat and no lag makes it incredible!

 

Metroid Prime 2 is worth spending the 100 bucks on a gamecube...its better than ANY FPS on PS2, thats for sure....and while it has nothing along the lines of online multiplayer support, it does have some multiplayer split screen stuff that looks really really sweet. it is easily the 2nd best FPS out this season for consoles behind Halo 2

 

Part of the appeal of FPS is the fact you can have multiplayer and online playability.

As much as I agree with you that Metroid Prime 1 or 2 is a good app for the GameCube, the fact that it does not allow for multiplayer misses out on a giant chunk of the appeal and fun factor.

Half-life 2 is not comparable imo, that game has a different interface and play options, you have to set up teams and roles and all that jazz, its a more 'technical' game than unreal 2k4.. correct me if I'm wrong.

Half-Life and Halo/Unreal are two completely seperate types of games. Granted their all FPS's. But their extremely different.


Halo and Unreal2k4 are VERY SIMILAR game-play wise. If they were both PC, I would choose Unreal for sure... it just has some cool things that Halo is missing. Scorpian > Warthog. Period.

However, if Unreal2k4 were on xbox... it'd suck. Like it always has on consoles.


Halo is a very fun game. It is very personal and requires alot of teamwork. All-in-all... its just honest to goodness: FUN. It's very arcade "game-ish".

Beyond that, I've already commented on the multiplayer interface that is second to none.


We have over 30 guys from here playing Halo2 on a daily basis within a week of its release. That type of organization would be impossible otherwise.

Actually MS bought the technology/game from another company to start... too bad they didn't buy the same physics engine half-life used. Probably not enough CPU to do it on the box.

I was under the impression it was out already...was reading PC Gamers in the Dr's office yesterday(Nov04 edition). Had a HUGE write up on cheats, how to adjust frame-rates & pic quality, etc. Had a solid 25 or 30 pages on that game alone.

They also mentioned the Tribes game, said it was pretty good also.

 

ok.. Quake IV is not out yet. I checked a few sites and the release date ranged from February 2005 to November 2005... ok phew I don't feel so bad anymore.

ps. went to Bestbuy last nite, GT4 is listed as a December 16th release....

Yup...I recall it was a mid-December release too. The Holidays will definitely be glued to the screen for moi.

I don't think I slept from the time TeamFortress came out for Quake 1... until I finally got bored with Quake 2 a year or so after its release.

Yup. Fave weapon was by far the beloved Railgun...But, so was it for everyone. Memories of the mad dash for it at the beginning of every round...Wheeeee!

Have fun with UT2K4! It's a great game...

Most memorable moment was when someone first discovered the Redeemer (this was when UT2K4 was available for trial prior to its release) and launched it towards my squad...we all kinda stared and wondered what that incoming missle was (hey, it was kinda slow moving, okay?!?)...Oh gawd, we were such 'tards.
