360----3 Red Flashes?

Picked up the XBOX360 as a Christmas present. Got the teenager COD3, the little one (10yr) SW Lego and me?......NFSCarbon.

Well, 2hrs later after opening the box and getting set up and letting them play first...I try mine. 20 minutes in, the screen goes blank and red lights flashing on the unit. Reboot and play for another 10 minutes before it does it again. I go to bed...frustrated over this damn thing. Next morning my teenager tells me it won't work at all now! 3 red flashes around the power button. Call MS for answers and get Max (recorded voice that you talk to like a buddy) and he has help. Take out the hard drive and power up----shut down and reinsert hard drive and restart.
Well, the red flashes have disappeared....for now. Haven't tried it yet, probably tomorrow, but has anyone had this issue before? Seems odd to have an issue hours after opening. Original XBOX never gave this kind of problem

Supposedly three red rings are the worst ones to have. Everyone I've heard of with that problem has had to send it in.

are you sure the 360 and the power prick both have plenty of room to breath?

if it keeps up then time to send it in or take it in for replacement/repair.

most of the 3 red rings ive heard of lately involve something silly. most people have resolved them long term by simply smacking their xbox. lol

if the hard drive trick did it, i wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again.

that sucks... of the 2 times I had to returned my 360 at Costco... that red light thing was one of them. Since it's so new... I'd take it back TODAY! and get a new one... seriously, mine was a few months into it.

i really dont think it needs to be taken back. its a very common thing, and like this resolution shows... it was probbaly little more than a hard drive which was loosely attached.

it's the DVD drive.

if you don't mind voiding your warranty, you can quiet it down with this guide: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2066860,00.asp

I'd definitely return it @ the store for another one...

i bought my 360 launch day last year, and had the three red lights start flashing a few weeks ago... thankfully MS extended their warranty to cover the original batch of 360's for 2 years so i had to send it in to get it fixed.... i'm lucky... i could've easily been SOL and had to buy a new one...

Seeing as you just bought it and paid 400 for it or whatever it was, i'd definitely take it back and exchange it for one that works flawlessly... cuz if it doesn't work well now, it's probably not gonna get better as time goes on... and once ur outta warranty... you might as well buy another one...

3 Red rings have hit me 3 times. I'm on my 3rd 360 in 1 year now. Everytime I buy, I buy 2 yr replacement plan from BestBuy. It was $49.99. Looking at the rate they have raised it to $59.99 now. I've spent $160 on 2 yr replacement plan till now. Everytime you return you need to buy new plan. No wonder MS have extended warranty to 1 yr now. It's amazing how company like MS cannot nail this problem.

once again... which is the exact reason why I buy from Costco... I've returned mine twice already... and I hate admit this... I returned 2 of my friends' also... so, actually... I've gone back to Costco and returned 4 times!!! (I rotate around different Costos... there are 3 in my area). Suppose you didn't have a membership... I think it's like $35 a year... that alone is worth it...

Mine started doing the 3 light thing last week. Called MS, as of last Friday all systems have a 1 year warranty. They sent me a prepaid box, I shipped it out, and 4 days later I have a brand new xbox. A paper included said the "graphics interface" malfunctioned so they just replaced the whole thing.

Not a big deal, free fix.

All of these problems are making me gun shy on getting a 360 tomorrow.

Call MS today and have them send out packaging so you can ship it back to them, you will be out of a 360 for about 9 days. If your feeling balsy, I heard that this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5nfmJTQJr8 works 85% of the time.

It sounds to me like the external Hard Drive was simply loosened during shipping. Not really a big deal. No need to read the riot act.

Does that really work, seems kinda dumb to void your warranty on doing something like that.

It must have been a bad thing that I couldn't hear it because it just broke last week and I was already over my one year.

Well, it's been awhile since I made that first post. My son finished COD3 and currently playing GOW. Those and Halo2, Lego Star Wars and NFS:underground....no more problem w/ the 3 red flashes. It must have been a loose harddrive installation. I'm not saying that will fix all, but it fixed mine.
