Usualy you're supposed to just let the insurance company and the body shop work it out and just stand back. It sounds like you OK'd the body shop for the work before insurance was involved and now they're unwilling to cover the work you agreed to without their consent, or some such.

So, the body shop said it would cost $1700, and your insurance company estimated it at $800. That's very common. Try getting another shop to quote the repair for you. And if that doesn't work, have the shop work with the insurance adjuster. A lot of times they have ways of dealing with it.

Better yet. Go through the insurance company to find the body shop. They have certain ones that they work with that do the work at the price that the insurance company tells them to do it at.

OP, you do realize that you are responsible for paying deductable right....?
Regardless, I was in the same situation before (street parked, went inside, hit and run), my insurance took care of it without me paying anything for it. I just had to get a police report and fax it to the insurance company.

A. You got a quote from the body shop for 1,700...you "ok'd" them to do the work.
Meanwhile the insurance company adjuster reviewed the damage and said it's only 800. Now you are out of pocket for the entire 1700 / 1000 deductible.
B. You have no idea what your policy was and are surprised you have a 1000 deductible....and are upset the damage is only at 800.
...again something is amis......you need to clarify.

I see. The shop is quoting $1700, but insurance says it's only $800.
Since your deductible is so high at $1K your insurance won't cover, & if you let the shop fix it they will charge you the $ they quoted.
That means that you either have another body shop look at it. Or ask insurance to recalculate the cost using all OEM parts & get it over the $1K.

So in a nutshell, the bodyshop tried to charge you $1,700 for the damages, but your insurance company insists that the damage is only worth $800.
I would go to another body shop for another quote, and if your deductible is $1,000, there's no sense in even going through insurance, but i'm sure you know that.....right?
